Phenomenal work, I like how early on he seemed younger but with the layers of realism he becomes his true self, but with spirituality in mind he also can be seen artistically or creatively and then his age doesn't matter. Great work Dave from Canada

The way you finesse the darker pigments to create such a beautiful and delicate soft lighting. STUNNING execution and artwork.

I'm learning by copying. I learn best by arriving at questions to find answers to. Most difficult are portraits with dark shade areas. From one-day watercolor painting I learned that shadow on each side of the head should include colors from the other shadow side, eg around the eyes. In this portrait artist uses three passes on shadows. What is each one for? First seems to establishing colors. But it gets completely obscured by later painting. Maybe to guide second, that seems to establish the density of color. Final pass seems to go darker to establish detail. I will try this in my copy. In second and third passes I ask myself, what is each stroke for? So many puzzles, coming so fast. Artist's skill poses endless questions. How to render wrinkles? Very complex, takes a lot of attention, but the most convincing part of mens' portraits.

何気なく筆が進んでいるように見えているけど、驚くほど筆運びが大担でかつ繊細。そしてこの人物を写真と比較してみると仕上がりの絵が写真よりもリアルなのでさらに驚きました。

Another observation--our master seems to use the same brush all the time, while changing paint color with every stroke. So he is washing paint out of the brush continually. This uses up a lot paint, perhaps this is why he uses inexpensive paint in bottles. To avoid washing the brush so often and using up a lot of paint (Winsor and Newton professional tubes) I extend each color probably too long, instead of changing color with each brush stroke. I note he does change colors directly on the palette without cleaning his brush, I'd better practice that but I find soft workable paints quickly harden and won't easily mix to make new colors. Something else I try instead of mixing dark shades with colors is to first establish the shadows using a dark monochrome van dyke brown paint then apply other colors over it. I find working in monochrome good for exploring particular problems but the final effect of adding other colors over it is dismal.

I have read all your posts. Although the translator did not provide a perfect interpretation, I was able to understand the meaning of the text. I don't think anyone has observed my paintings as closely as you. Most of the content of the article matches my thoughts and painting methods. Thank you for watching. And good luck with what you do.

You do such a great job of bringing in a lot of different colors into your skin tones. Do you wet the paper first when do the first wash on the face? Beautiful painting!

Another observation--In the photo, shadows on both sides of the face are the same cool color, but aim to make far-side colors cool, eg purple, near side color, red. Abd, downward-facing shadow is redder, reflecting the inherent color of flesh, while upward-facing shadow reflects the color of the light. These add depth to the image, right?. And I find dragged brush doesn't look good in shadows, except for facial hair, but it works fine on the light side.

You seemed to be struggling with this one a bit. Did you use new (different) paints in this palette? Seems like the pigment density was on the low side (faded more than normal).
