Turn off the tap when you brush your teeth - this can save 6 litres of water per minute. Place a cistern displacement device in your toilet cistern to reduce the volume of water used in each flush. You can get one of these from your water provider. Take a shorter shower. Shower can use anything between 6 and 45 litres per minute. Always use full loads in your washing machine and dishwasher - this cuts out unnecessary washes in between. Fix a dripping tap. A dripping tap can waste 15 litres of water a day, or 5,500 litres of water a year. Install a water butt to your drainpipe and use the water collected to water your plants, clean your car and wash your windows. Water your garden with a watering can rather than a hosepipe. A hosepipe uses 1,000 litres of water an hour. Mulching your plants (with bark chippings, heavy compost or straw) and watering in the early morning and late afternoon will reduce evaporation and also save water. Fill a jug with tap water and place this in your fridge. This will mean you do not have to leave the cold tap running for the water to run cold before you fill your glass. Install a water meter. When you're paying your utility provider for exactly how much water you use, laid out in an itemised bill, there's an incentive to waste less of the stuff. Invest in water-efficient goods when you need to replace household products. You can now buy water-efficient showerheads, taps, toilets, washing machines, dishwashers and many other water-saving products. For more information visit the Waterwise website. Why does saving water matter? Even though water doesn't appear in short supply in the UK, using less water actually means you are: Reducing energy use. Cleaning waste water (or 'grey water', as it's called) is an energy-intensive process; so is heating the hot water that comes out of your taps. Saving money. If you're on a water meter, these tips above could save you a bob or two.

I would say aerating taps are more preferable to aerating shower heads as people tend to leave taps running. In a shower some people find they have to shower for longer with a low flow or aerating shower head. Whilst water saving should be done where possible it is only suitable if it matches peoples water use. For example if someone with a low flow shower head finds that they have to shower for longer to wash off the soap suds they may well end up using more water in the long run.

ok some of the tips make sense, I like the jug in the toilet idea, i will try that, already have low flow shower heads, but she mentions the chemicals and oil going into the sewers by washing the car at home,..really have you seen the boat load of chemicals thrown on your car at the car wash, and as far as the dry wash cleaners, really you could maybe clean dust off the car but beyond that , useless, just more chemicals in the system.

By wrapping cling wrap on dishes before piling food on it saves them from getting dirty and having to clean them...all you need to wash is the cutlery.

Divert water from the gutter into your pool and water tank-if u have one, put low flow shower heads, put cut off valves/taps under your sinks and basin to slow the flow-turn them half way.!, u only need a small amnt of water to wet ur toobrush, put a brick in your toilet cisterns, or bottle of water with some stones in it-dont float, to displace 2 litres, it all adds up.?

Sunlight really isn't a renewable resource. On a cosmic timescale it will burn out and no longer be available. Think of water, more like trees. Even though trees are renewable, if you cut down more trees then you plant, you will eventually run out. Fresh water is the same way. Human water use disrupts normal hydrologic processes that replenish fresh water sources. Even though water flows out of the tap every time you need it the source of that water maybe diminishing.

Take the car to a recycling car wash (yes, these exist, probably even in your community). Get rid of the lawn (the “English lawn” that is so prevalent, even in places like Phoenix, is a hideous waste of water). Install a gray-water plumbing system, that will re-use all non-toilet water. The list goes on…

You could also take a dump in the backyard to save a flush. That way, the soil would be fertilised and the plants would grow better, which would help you use less water in the garden. Just make sure the neighbours aren't filming or watching you ;-)

All Californians should take this in mind since we're nearly always in a drought, even during flooding rainy season. I just took a 40 minute shower and that's one hell of a water waste.

The waterless car wash is not such a good idea.. Those products cost quite a lot and you run out of them quickly. + it's not good for your car's paint to wash it without water...
