Isn't a solenoid engine using coils to attract and repel magnets a really crappy form of brushless motor or stepper motor ;)

Those "aerospace grade, high modulus carbon fiber tubes" were absolutely necessary. Nothing short of that strength/stiffness would have been up to the job of supporting that jar. :P

Great idea with the aerospace grade carbon fibre rollers! It definitely would have been the weak point of the machine otherwise. I just cannot think of anything better suited for this application!

You could also increase the turns of your coils to increase the force that is applied on the magnets and you could also take a thicker wire to dissipate the heat better than thin wire.

For future motor experiments, glass syringes might be a good choice, as glass melts at a much higher temperature and would require less cooling to run optimally.

I really like this new direction. Over complicated and way over engineered solutions for every day problems. While I am here for the rc content I truly enjoyed the detour.

Just a heads up! If you wanted to make it work MUCH better, simply increase the number of turns of magnet wire. Double the turns = double the magnetic field. 4X the number of turns = 4X the magnetic field. It doesn't have to be super neat, just wind layer over layer of wire. if you want to keep it neater, wrap the coil of wire with tape after each layer. The limiting factor is the voltage/resistance of the wire, but you have a long way to go before you hit that limit.

I've never eaten peanut butter but however it must be some special stuff for this kind of dedication.

Good job. I build a solenoide engine for a school project and After some testing we conclud that the benefit of inverting the polarity of the coil isn't worth the complessity of adding an h bridge. Also we used an optical sensor and Without including a dead zone and It work very well and also the polarity of the magnet on the piston Is a Major factor on the torque of the motor, because if the fields have opposite polarity, they subtract each other and there Is almost no torque at the output. We optimized a single piston piston engine that reached 1300rpm at 10A 15v. We were planning a 4 opposite cilinder engine but the covid stopped the project and we didn't finish it

Finally saw this, just had me and my son laughing our asses off watching it, great entertainment as usual. Should make a greatest hits album with all these great tunes you put into these.

The peanut butter song has popped into my head at random times over the last 2 years, but I could never remember where it came from. It wasn't until I looked up the album from Colin to hear some of the other songs from more recent videos and then saw it on there. My itch has been satisfied, and I can finally play this song for others when it gets stuck in my head and I need to share the madness. It's almost impossible to look up when you forget the context. I just typed in peanut butter 7 times followed by "yeah" and could never find anything.
