The Nakivale Refugees Settlement sized approximately 72 square kilometers is hosting over 140,000 Refugees and Asylum seekers in Isingiro District, Southwestern Uganda. This is resource constrained settings which are also shared with the hosting communities posing increased serious public health risk prompted by congestion, inadequate water supply, inadequate sanitation and inadequate hygiene. This is evidenced by the ongoing Cholera outbreak caused by a bacterium called Vibrio Cholerae in Nakivale Refugees Settlement was confirmed by Medical Team International (MTI) a UNHCR Implementing partner on the 4th November 2021, a highly transmissible disease through the fecal - oral route. The UNHCR and UNHCR’s Implementing partners in Nakivale Refugees Settlement are working tirelessly in response to the Cholera Outbreak. There has been any case from the host community so far. Although most affected refugees’ communities; villages C and B of Nyarugungu cluster also registered isolated cases from Nsangano, Kabazana, Misiera, New Congo and Kashojwa B. According to MTI - Nakivale Refugees Settlement report dated 10th November 2021 accumulative cases were 107. However, Nakivale Refugee Settlement hosted refugees from DRC, Burundi, Rwanda, Somalia, Ethiopia, Eretria, Sudan and South Sudan.
