Candle Jet Water Feature Construction
Part 3/6 - Conduits & Border Stone
With the fibreglass liner in place, it's now time to connect the external pipework.
The cable conduit is installed with swept elbows to allow for a smoother transition between pipe runs. This will make it easier to pull cables through the pipe. It runs from the reservoir to the location of the control switches. It could be a simple remote-controlled outdoor socket or a dedicated control panel with no-volt relays for connecting into the house management system.
Drainage and overflow pipe is connected to the garden drainage system. A slight fall is maintained from the reservoir to the drain. The PVCu pipe can be connected to an underground drainage pipe with a rubber coupling.
Water supply is provided with a 20mm MDPE polypipe. The polypipe is fed through the water supply conduit (installed in part 2) with enough slack inside the reservoir to allow for a connection to a float valve. Other end of the pipe is connected to the mains supply, with a shut-off valve for maintenance. Note that the water feature supply should be isolated from the rest of the garden supply (i.e., irrigation).
Pipework needs to be tested with a hydrostatic pressure test before backfilling.
To backfill pipe trenches, pea shingle is used to cover the pipes first in order to protect and support the pipework.
The border stone assembly is made up of 20mm granite profiles laid on a 10-15mm mortar bed with 2mm grouted joints.
The opening in the border stone needs to be carefully measured to allow for a clearance for the water feature frame and top granite assembly.
Underground drainage to comply with BS EN 1401-1:2019 + A1:2023 which specifies PVCu pipes, fittings and systems for non-pressure buried applications.
Water supply and fittings to comply with BS EN 12201 and BS 8588.
