2018 ford ka plus active ti vct 1.2 with 21k miles on the clock developed a engine misfire after a round trip of approx 120 miles...we found water in no1 spark plug hole and trying to establish how the water got there...in the end we believe it was the result of the vehicle being washed with a pressure washer the previous day....

Hi Alan. We Have A Few Of Those KA+'s In Cyprus (Where I Work) And We Have Had The Exact Same Problem With Those Engines. Speaking To A Colleague Of Mine Who Works For Ford Main Dealer Service Station, It's Apparently A Natural Problem On Those Engines Because Of The Length Of The Ignition Coil Hole Depth. We Live In A Warm Climate And Because Of The Excessive Heat, They Suffer From Condensation Down The Plug Holes. I'm Not Sure If That Is Just What Happened On Your KA+ Because You Had A Warm Summer. That's All I Can Put It Down To. Anyway, As Always, Great Video.

A couple of observations to also consider - this was a common problem on the MK2 Focus petrol's if I recall correctly where a lot were fitted with faulty washer jet seals on the bonnet, and would leak directly onto the top of the engine as soon as you use the washer jets & subsequently leak into the spark plug chambers. Also in this case, look back at the video at around 3:33 & look closely at the coil pack connector - it also looks fouled from coming into contact with water. It may not necessarily be related but could also be contributing to the misfire due to the electrical connection being in contact with the water - this might well be two different issues in this instance but I would go back again & clean the connector to iron it out. Either way to me, this is definitely the result of water coming down from above & onto the engine.

I had a Fiesta that the core plug caused a similar problem. When it is was in getting fixed, Ford lent me a Focus and it suffered from the washer jet problem. So rather than sitting in a Ford dealer waiting for my car to be fixed, I spent a morning sitting waiting in a diffrent Ford dealer to have the loaner fixed :D lol. The Focus would have been a mk1 and not a mk2 though

Wet belts for Ford have been a disaster. I know people who get them swapped every 20k, through fear of them breaking. Scores of transit vans end up with scrapped engines due to the welt belt failing. Why they moved away from the chains they had in the 2.2 diesels, I'll never know.

I doubt any of them will ever have a timing belt change. Wet belts often degrade into the engine oil, block oil pump pick up then the engine seizes. They are only designed and built to last the 3yr PCP and about 30k miles.

Hi Alan just thinking, Monika said she had it pressure washed the day before the misfire - so I doubt if it would have got so rusty so quickly. Maybe she'd had it pressure washed a good few times in the past and it gradually got more rusty over time? My other theory is sudden heavy rainwater. About a month ago there was torrential really heavy rain here continuously for a couple of hours like I never seen before, causing flooding. Including my Mk3 Mondeo! I had to bail out the drivers footwell! My car never ever leaked water before, so that rain was really exceptional. Maybe you had that storm there in Huntingdon and that it found it's way into the engine compartment - and that the normal drainage channels couldn't cope? Anyway, glad it's sorted. Monika's car looks very smart. Cheers. Vivian.

Aw come on! how many detailers and car enthusiasts use a pressure washer every wash surely ford can make a car that can withstand modern wash techniques. I'd test it out with a pressure washer to ensure that is the cause and I'd be looking at the windscreen washer jets/ tubing just in case, maybe some silicone grease on the seals as a precaution to stop it in future, nice diagnosis and glad you got the plug out and miss monnie joined the show

I had a similar case with water although without misfires on my 1.4 and 1.25 Fiestas Mk6 but didn't have them long enough to follow through. At the time I just removed the water, replaced the plugs putting a dab of copper grease on the threads so they wouldn't seize. They were pain to remove. Water ingress kind of makes sense now.. Had Mazda petrol cars previously and never experienced condensation b4, so I'm inclined to think it was jet washer or rain water...

I've got a Ford Fiesta 2012 with low mileage. Twice I've had water getting down the coil packs from the scuttle after medium/heavy rain. The AA man knew all about the problem when I told him the symptom, he sees it all the time. I have a sloping driveway, which makes matters worse, if the car is pointing down the slope rainwater easily overwhelmes the scuttle. So now I have to park with the front of the car facing up the slope. I'm amazed Ford still haven't sorted this out after ten years. It's very poor design which surely could be easily fixed with an engine cover of some kind.

The state of that plug suggests that rust has been building up for some time

I had similar issues in my old mk2 2.8i V6 Galaxy. If the scuttle panal rubber seal perished, it pished water all over the coil packs and down to the plugs it went.

Easy answer, take the car and pressure wash the engine, its right next to you, dry the engine off, see if any water went past the seals, I would add some electric grease to the boots, same issue with some Renaults, without the cover water can drop in the coil pack tubes. I used some Permatex Dielectric Grease or is that not recommended for fords?

it wasn't water she had in her sparkplug hole or exhaust hole
@Crushwokery
@Crushwokery 8 месяцев назад
Pressure washer is the only reasonable explanation but why water only down one plug hole❓ Also, before replacing the coil pack I'd smear some silicone grease on the inner seal and on the working edge of the boot that makes contact with the rocker cover. Leave it now and see how it goes. If it gets water ingress again I'd try the silicone grease route next time if it happens again and see if it stops it❓

Alan. Do you need to change the flywheel when you change the cluthc on a mk3 mondeo petrol? I realise you can't tell me difinitely, it has about 137000miles on the clock.

Only if it's a dual mass flywheel. I don't think it was on the petrol engines
@rimmersbryggeri

@@superseven220 I think it was but it's kind of shady wether it was or not. Might be it was before the facelift or something like that also.

no, only if its a duel mass flywheel but i sure the petrol engines dont have them..or it would have to be severely worn or scored

Case of engine getting hotter before the body of the coil pack, condensation forming, rinse, repeat. Why cylinder 1 though, is a mystery.

I'm wondering if the spark plug wasn't correctly torque down, from cold the condensation would push past the thread and as soon as its all upto temperature it seal's trapping moisture.🤔
