Looking to pick up a ZJ with a leaky water pump, I have a feeling that it is also the bypass hose that is also causing the leaking, thanks for showing through detail of what YOU do to replace the parts. Also, a factory Chrysler part that lasted over 270k without being replaced should be in a museum or in the Book of world records. Lol.

It works best to leave the top hose off while refilling the rad until coolant comes out then reconnect and continue filling with the coolant funnel. Sometimes these motors can be very difficult to get the cooling flowing after a complete drain of the system for some reason. It's like there's a huge hydrolock going on.

thanks again... had a crack in my radiator so i decided to just put in a nice looking used one .... then i got trans fluid in that radiator and my water pump started leaking ... so i went and got a new radiator, water pump, hoses... i broke the shroud into multiple pieces trying to cut corners putting it back together, the new radiator is nice but cost me over $200, spent extra on the water pump so i could get the new bolts and that little tube thing that goes to a heater hose ($130+) it came with the bots somewhat fixed into the holes so i was like great i don't have to remember which holes get what bolts but when i went to put it on two of the bolts were switched (took me about 30 minutes to figure that out, after many swear words) then when i got it all together put water in to check everything and one of the ($30) hoses has a mark where it looks as if someone ran a razor on it. (its not all the way through but noticeable when the hose swells.)... as much as this shit cost you would think quality would be great, i am disappointed but everything seems to be okay at the moment. >>> my question is if water gets into the trans fluid it would turn pink milky like the radiator did, right?

One really important thing to watch I'm not sure if I missed it or not but you need to keep track of all of the bolts and where they came from the water pump bolts and the accessory bracket are all different lengths. A really neat trick is to use a piece of cardboard and draw what the water pump looks like and put holes where they came from and stick the bolts in the holes in the cardboard so you can put it back exactly how they came out.

May have been pointed out already, but for the 5.2, that fan is shaped like a human - 2 legs, arms, and a head. If you line it up just so, you can slip it out of the bottom without removing the shroud. That said, removing the shroud ALSO gives you a much nicer working space for dealing with the pump, so...

7:39 time mark, I believe that bolt is the one that goes through the pump and timing chain cover. Not sure, just off the top of my head. Is the place where I had the timing chain cover gasket failed on my '97 ZJ's 5.2. So check there as a possible source of leakage. So I did replace my timing chain and gears since I had to replace that gasket. Easiest way to break the dampener bolt loose it to use a breaker bar resting on the frame and kicking over the starter. Outside of Barricade's content, feel free to refer to the Jeep Forum(s) as needed also as they have the torque specifications listed. Once again, great coverage. :)

Some models of that fan shroud actually have a removeable snap-in segment at the very bottom. Barely slide your head under, pop it out with a standard body plastic rivet removal tool (aka screwdriver,) and this removes about a 10" section. This then, allows you to easily pull the shroud out/in, without needing to also remove the fan. It makes any job around this MUCH easier. Note also, since this is an OEM possible option, you can also make your own with a pair of tin snips, and just remove the same segment from the bottom of the shroud's plastic housing.

Oh ! And the 98 has an interesting change - the shroud has a removeable section in the bottom width. You can mod the 97 once out, with a simple pair of tin snips :)

Non water pump question but great job BTW 👍 I watch your videos the most and I replace the brakes on my 98 ZJ limited but the front left brake caliper was hard to compress and now 3 of my four disc brakes are sticking would would cause all three to do this? I was guessing a bad hose but the caliper is bad I think too but why the rear brakes IDK what's going on 😂 #JeepLife
@barricadegarage5361
@barricadegarage5361 5 лет назад
Open the bleeder valve on the caliper, then try to compress the piston. If the piston wont compress with the bleeder valve open the its your brake caliper that is bad... But if your piston does compress and brake fluid starys shooting out the bleeder valve when your compressing it, then your calipers are good and you need a new brake hose... The caliper slide pins not being lubricated can cause this to happen
