I just replaced my water pump in a 2001 Echo, this video was great, took 2 hours, there were 3 bolts holding the engine mount in place, 2 on top, one on bottom, thank-you!

excellent, studied this video a few times, then changed my water pump today with no problems, but to be on the safe side i placed two trolley jacks under the engine and lowered one slightly at a time, thank you, you made it easy for me, kind regards....

thanks for the video. i've changed alot of waterpumps over the years but never in a small front wheel drive car so your video helped remove the doubts so i could do it myself instead of paying big bucks to have a shop do it.

Thanks, this was useful! Unfortunately, I didn't catch your reference to the 3rd 14mm nut on the underside of the engine mount at the very start, but I figured it out. Twisted the shroud mounting bolt off right away which created another job to drill and tap a new one. Longest part of job was removing the old gasket. I figured the rattling noise was the timing chain! When I pulled the serpentine belt off, I could immediately feel the rough water pump bearing (much easier repair) so no need to start it up to diagnose further. 260,000 km - probably the original pump. I used a very thin coat permatex aviation sealer on both sides of the metal gasket (I went aftermarket $67 which was $100 cheaper than dealer because I needed this job done today -hope it lasts) just because I didn't feel like messing with this again. I know that it was probably not necessary but I use it on outboard engine repairs and it releases fairly well. I don't know how guys do this job without dropping the engine. My hands are bigger than Donald Trump's and it was hard enough getting in there to remove gasket material with the extra clearance created by dropping it. It's the way to go unless you are lucky enough to have the gasket come off clean. I was starting to try, but removal of the bottom alternator bolt to get it out of the way was far harder than just undoing 3 engine mount bolts and jacking car up. The dealer mechanic I spoke to does it this way too - so I'm sure they find it faster and easier. The only thing I'd add is that you need to take care to align the engine mount stud into its hole as you raise the engine. At first I forgot to do that and I was wondering where the engine was hanging up. Just misalignment of the stud. Took about 3 hours. I'm not fast, but the little Echo is back on the road running flawlessly again! Thanks again for your instructions! Edit: I get to do this job again! There's a beautiful pink residue all over that side of the engine and the coolant is down. M advise to those who do this job is to go OEM. I saved money on the $67 aftermarket pump and now I get the joy of doing it again only 16,000 later. I paid $185 this time from the dealer. It better last this time!!!!

Thnks for video........I just changed mine pump on 2001 echo....Was able to do it from top but had to use alot of diff type wrenches.(gear wrenches ,etc ,etc )...and also had to pry over engine 1/16 of inch at motor mount, just by prying did not have to loosen an motor mount bolts......Not as bad as I thought it would have been.....bob

thanks for posting this video and the comments made. All helped . I was able to replace the pump on our '03 Vios without removing the tire, raising the car or lowering the engine. But, it was very tight and took quite a while. I did have to remove the alternator , the radiator top holder and the bottom black plastic cover shield. To remove the 3 nuts of the pump pulley, i used flat iron bar on the 2 nuts to counter the torque of the spanner on the 3rd nut; this is how i was able to remove the nuts in such a tight space. tightening was the same technique. Hope it works for you. I think there are advantages to the video method shown. Using the car ramps makes for lots of crawl space and lowering the engine also makes access to the pulley much better. In retrospect,, I would do this if I had a ramp. I hope my method helps if you do not have ramps to use. Another reason why i chose not to lower or raise the engine was I was worried that i might tear the other 3 engine mounts; mine are 13 Year old engine mounts ! I also note that replacing water pumps on the Vios is much more difficult that the older toyotas because of tight quarters. Its theoretically straightforward, but the tight space between the water pump pulley the the chassis wall makes it very difficult. I wish that the other models do not have the same tight spaces for servicing. I also wish toyota engineers think about giving a little more clearance even just 10mm more would help much.

I had already replace my water pump using this method except that i raise the engine instead of lowering it down, since it is easier to access the 3 bolts so you may be able to raise it, than the 3 bolts to lower it.

Is there a way to do this, without lowering the engine? I am not comfortable doing that, cause it might damage more the other components and linkages in the process.

Did you install the gasket dry? Did you use any kind of sealer and did it work? Thanks! Doing my echo in two days

When I used to work at the dealer the would get the new belt on without loosening the tensioner. This is because the belt can slide over the tapered edge of the wp. Possibly the easiest car to do a wp on ever, re and re in 20 minutes.

From start to finish, how long do you think it would take to switch out the pump, and not having access to a lift, so just ramps.

Hello, I am trying to get my aunts echo running that has sat parked for several years. I wanted to crank the engine over manually with a ratchet before getting too involved. I have not looked at the car yet but could you please tell me where I can get access to the main crank nut and which direction it should run? From this video I assume it is on the right hand side standing at the front of the car and it looks like it it the largest pulley in that setup. Please help me out as I cannot find any information about this online. Many thanks. Craig
