Although the peace process between Israel and the Palestinians has stalled, cooperation continues on common environmental issues. These issues, especially relating to shared water resources, have implications for both the security and the quality of life of Israelis, Palestinians and their neighbours. Ambassador Oded Eran and Gidon Bromberg spoke about the strategic and security implications of water and other environmental issues for the relationship between Israelis and Palestinians, as well as their impact on nearby countries including Jordan.
Ambassador Oded Eran is a senior research fellow at the Institute for National Security Studies (INSS) in Tel Aviv, a think tank that shapes the public discourse around Israel's national security agenda and provides policy analysis and recommendations to decision makers, public leaders, and the strategic community, both in Israel and abroad. He served as director of INSS from July 2008 to November 2011, following a long career in Israel's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other government positions, including as Israel's ambassador to the EU (covering NATO as well), Israel's ambassador to Jordan, and head of Israel's negotiating team with the Palestinians. Dr Eran serves as an advisor to the Knesset Subcommittee on Foreign Affairs and holds a PhD from the London School of Economics.
Gidon Bromberg is the Israel Co-Director of EcoPeace Middle East, a tripartite Israeli-Palestinian-Jordanian environmental NGO that promotes sustainable development and peace efforts in the Middle East. He speaks regularly on water, peace and security issues in various forums. He has presented before the UN Commission for Sustainable Development, the United States House Committee on Foreign Affairs, the European Parliament and the advisory meeting to the UN High Level Panel on Security. He is a member of the Israeli Inter-Ministerial Committee on the Future of the Dead Sea, of the Israel UNESCO World Heritage Committee and the Inter-Ministerial Committee for Sustainable Development in Israel.
This event was chaired by Dana Allin, Senior Fellow for US Foreign Policy and Transatlantic Affairs and Editor of Survival. It took place in the Lee Kuan Yew Conference Room, Arundel House, 13-15 Arundel Street, Temple Place, London WC2R 3DX*.
