Water striders are way cooler than you might think! These hemiptera are part of the Gerris sp. group. These water insects have so many amazing features that allow them to walk on water and hunt and kill their prey. Thinks like venom, microscopic hydrophobic hairs and incredible speed are some of their secret weapons. Pleustons have evolved such a unique life that makes them worth writing about in your thesis
Water striders have multiple names. Pond skaters, Jesus bugs and Skimmers are just a few of names we give them. Water Striders belong to the order, Hemiptera which includes insects like plant bugs, stink bugs, assassin bugs and water scorpions just to name a few. So, they are members of the insect group that you can actually call “bugs” and get away with it. There are 1700 species id’ed so far, from the common species we all know (show strider) to a giant species in vietnam (Gigantometra gigas) with legs spans of nearly 1 foot across! There is even an ocean (show ocean waves) faring species which as far as i know is the only insect species found braving the waves of the ocean.
This is a short nature documentary film you don't want to miss.

I'll definitely never look at water striders the same way again. Thank you for all your hard work on this. As usual, I learned a lot!

Dude, this is nuts. I grew up in southern AR and saw these guys all the time. Had no clue there was so much info on striders. I'm supposed to head to Vietnam next year, now I'm wondering about those giant striders. Cool vid Chris.

Thanks. They can be pretty neat. Try watching them from a low vantage point. You will see all their communication going on. Cool stuff.

I grew up in Western Oregon and these little rascals were everywhere. I'm sorry to say now that as a boy I spent many hours trying to hit them with my BB gun but it did provide a certain satisfaction to nail one as it darted about in the creek behind our home. As you mention they dart about very quickly but will pause briefly sometimes and that's when you take the shot! Extra points for hitting a mating pair. This is what I did as a kid while others studied school work or learned to play a musical instrument. Great video!

Hi. First of all, I really like your name. Secondly, while I always feel bad and advise people not to harm living things or their homes, that must be some really good target practice. Over time, you must have become a good shot. I know most of us do things as children that we later learn to regret or shy away from doing, so I understand. I remember those days, myself. I was a great shot! There was a day where I shot a couple spiders on the opposite side of my garage (I was very scared of spiders). Most of the time though, I took aim at pencils, helium balloons floating away and even coins and caps from a cap gun. It got really fun when my brother would set up hidden army men in the yard and I would have to spot them with binoculars and then shoot at them from...the window. Yeah, good ole days - lol.

@@chrisegnoto Those plastic army men were great targets too. I'd forgotten about those. They were made of a relatively soft plastic and when hit by a Crosman 766 American Classic with 10 pumps of compressed air they'd have this huge "cannon ball" mark in their body. I still own that BB gun to this day but the chamber won't hold air now so perhaps I'll get it repaired one day. They were really well made. I also had a shotgun in high school but had never shot a rifle until I was in Marine Corps boot camp after graduating. I spent 4 years in the Corps and shot 6 expert awards and spent a year as a range coach so I reckon that air rifle taught me well. Granted many water skippers (as we called them) gave their lives for the honing of my skill. 😊 Great video. Just subscribed and I'll be watching your other videos as time permits. By the way I definitely laughed at the romantic music as the mating portion of the video. Nice touch!

I have never seen water striders fly, even to flee. They move so fast on the water that they probably never feel the need to. They are also some of the most vicious predators i've seen.

@chrisegnoto
@chrisegnoto 5 лет назад
Some of them overwinter under debris etc, while others will emerge from eggs durring last days of winter. I know they can be found half frozen under leaves or rocks by the water's edge in late winter.
