Water Temple - The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

Took me 3 months as a kid to beat this temple, before the internet. I remember coming home from school and my mom letting me play for 1 hour every day trying to find out what I was missing since I had gone to every room and collected every chest on the map. What I had missed was inside the center pillar building where you gotta raise and lower the water to access other floors. There was a door hidden underneath the first floor entrance that I had never noticed because the platform you stepped on was covering it. When I noticed it I remember being filled with joy as I was finally able to progress through the rest of the game.

Love it or hate it, the temple does have a banger of a song

I know many people don't like this temple, but the song is actually great.

Fun fact: the rippling sound is the same as the bone rattling sound in the Forest Temple just sped up 👍🏻

When I was younger, I vividly remember being stuck on this temple for what felt like ages. One night I thought of being sneaky and playing on the 64 after hours to finally beat it and progress. I ended up falling asleep to the song and kept dreaming of water for the entire night, no specific thing happended in my dream, just water flowing.

Ocarina of time and Majora's Mask are very special. They made magic with these.

Am I the only person who has always liked this dungeon? I always appreciated how challenging and non-linear it was

When I was young and playing through the Water Temple, I had just two words for Dark Link when I got to him: "Hammer time!"

This dungeon gets unrealistically shit on for doing something that at least the Shadow Temple afterward doesn't do, and that's test your puzzle-solving. While in the original game I'd also call it a test of patience, in Ocarina of Time 3D I think you can fully enjoy the dungeon the way it was always intended, and it's fantastic! A very decorated dungeon with some actual decent challenge this far into the game.

I liked this dungeon, especially the music, but the two parts I didn’t like about this dungeon was Dark Link and THAT one key.

I know everybody hates this temple but I absolutely love it, I love an enigmatic hard dungeon.

Music = great. Temple in N64= Infuriating Temple in 3DS version= Not so infuriating

When I first played this game last week, I already knew about this temple bad reputation. But honestly, I think it wasn't harder than the other temples like Forest or Fire temple. Opening your inventory every minute to put on the iron boots was really annoying, but apart from that, the temple was great in my opinion :) Forest Temple & Water Temple are my 2 favorites dungeons in OOT

Imagine the sense of pride I got when, after reading horror stories about this stage of the game, I saw myself navigating through it with relative ease and without any help whatsoever from any strategy guide - online or on paper. It must have taken me 2-3 days to complete, maybe eight hours total. I did struggle with the Shadow Temple and had to resort to guided help to obtain the Lens of Truth - is there any clue in the game leading us to the windmill..? Once I got it, I navigated the Shadow Temple without any help at all. I even figured out the strategy to defeat the Phantom Shadow Beast: Bongo Bongo without help. Once I figured it out after much trial and error, the battle became fun though I still struggled since doing what I wanted to do was still hard with so much going on.

This dungeon’s biggest stumbling blocks are the one (or several) easy to miss key(s), raising and lowering the water via Zelda’s lullaby, and the fact that in the original N64 version the Iron Boots weren’t able to be mapped to any of the yellow buttons. All of that combined can lead to what is otherwise a gorgeous and not-that-hard-on paper dungeon being an extremely frustrating experience.

Water Temple wasn’t all that bad. Just requires you to remember where everything is, particularly where the water raising symbols are. Once you know that and get to the Longshot quick enough, the Temple becomes incredibly easy.

favorite temple of mine in all zelda games.. loved the frustration, being lost and trapped in a temple witch seemed like an eternity. this music piece really nails that feeling of mystery, confusion, deception , incredible. one of the best and most mysterious tracks in the zelda universe.

Iconic temple in how tricky it was to solve the puzzles and the fight with Dark Link in that open room. This temple set a precedent for most water temples in future games being tricky to solve and beat IMO

Like every fan of zelda i met say that water temple in zelda games are in general very difficult but personally i think that is like ez and at the time cool because its like a puzzle enjoyable. They are also the best temple, like the one in majoras mask. This one is so unique and its like a problem in mathematics, when you understand this temple or water temple its so satisfying

Most of this track is serene and mysterious in a playful way, but then 0:40 hits to give you a little reminder that you are actually trapped in hell.

Even my N64 hated the Water Temple! It erased my file when I reached it for the first time! THEN AGAIN THE SECOND TIME AT THE SAME POINT!!!! It gave up when I got there for the third time...

Long time ago- I was having the worst insomnia. Stayed up for 2 days in a row on a normal basis. This was the only song that could get me to sleep.

As frustrating as this temple can be for some, this theme just brings back a wave (pun intended 😆) of nostalgia. I liked watching my dad play through this game, and I remember the Water Temple took him a few days to beat. This music was nice to listen to in the meantime. :)

Just made it through the water temple for the first time last night and wow just wow.I played on 3ds version so it was a lot more forgiving but even then this dungeon felt pike the ultimate test of puzzle solving,i felt i was playing prince of persia with changing the water level and flying with the hookshot,eventually i got stumped for a while looking for wherever the next key was to get to dark link but then i got there and what a boss,such a cool ode to zelda 2 while also being challenging he'd jump on my sword and strike me but then I'd hit him,even on my 3rd and last attempt he still took me down to 1 heart but I just barely pushed through,getting the longshot and besting the main boss.i have to say this has been my favourite part of ocarina so far so I'm exited for the fire temple and whatever else is next

How can you get mad at this temple when the music goes this hard? Lmao

As a kid (10 or 11 years old) I cannot remember having problems solving the puzzles in this temple or feeling annoyed by the Iron Boots shifting. For some reason this theme didn't stand out, as I only remember the other temple themes growing up. Since my last playthrough, spring 2022, I have returned to this upload many times. Maybe the sound is too abstract or subtle than the other temple themes, for a 10 year old? I think this is absolutely stunning! Detailed and uncomparable.. I feel abducted into an unknown universe. i really love it in here. if you take it from the bottom and go counterclockwise one room at a time, and note which rooms you've beaten because each entrance is actually slightly different, will have a different arrangement of pots or something by it. you'll never have to back track if you pay attention, and never need to change the water level more than the two times you raise it. and remember the key in the central tower! once you know that, this level becomes relaxing and oddly comforting. dark link is a legendary moment.

This is the best Zelda dungeon I have ever played. No, I'm not joking. Both the forest and fire temples had given me a hard time, leading to me needing to briefly look up some solutions to the puzzles. (The fire temple is still hard for me to do, just cause it feels so dumb sometimes.) So coming from my previous two most recent OoT dungeon experiences, I went to the water temple going "oh no". But somehow the whole thing just clicked. I missed one key at one point which sucked to have to backtrack to, but the puzzles just felt very deep and made me think about a dungeon in a way that no other Zelda game has had me do. (I played the 3DS remake, which drastically helps with the iron boots switching.) This dungeon also has a phenomenal miniboss, being dark link. The setting in that eerie room is perfect for that weird encounter. The shadow temple and adult portion of the spirit temple were, however, tough for me, just like every other one of my playthroughs.

This temple was sooo close to greatness. Just let us bind the boots to c buttons, and make it a little more obvious that you need to hug the wall where the sign is in order to change water levels… At least 3D lets you appreciate the temple a lot more, it’s really cool

i think the reason people struggle with this temple is because of how nonlinear it is. if you quit in the middle of it or die, it's easy to forget where you were and come back later completely confused about where you're supposed to be going.

As a 90s kid this game was so frustrating 😂😂😂 but such a classic!

I remember that this song always hinted towards a snake boss, the flute and the statues made it seem as if a water snake was the boss. Volvagia is an ancient dragon and the temple plays like that, you can hear bongos in Shadow Temple too.

This is one of my most favorite dungeons.

I recall being around 8 years old when I was introduced to this game, hanging out in the basement of a childhood friend's house, watching as he struggled endlessly with navigating this headbusting maze. This music is calming in that it takes me back to that time of my life, even though I understand now the trial he was undergoing at the time with no internet to turn to. The temple taught me patience, when I finally went through it myself years later.

I am among the people that got stuck in Water Temple at the spot everyone gets stuck in for few months but its still my favourite temple of the game.

I've listened to this over a thousand times, but I think this is the first time I've noticed the middle eastern kind of tone this music has.

This game is my childhood I remember following the Guide of how to finish the water Temple I love the music it reminds me of the Spa and when I’m taking a shower it’s very nice music!!!! :)

Coincidentally, I found this temple quite easy. I definitely found the Shadow Temple to be much harder. The Water Temple was one of the more fun temples, as to beat it, all you have to do is explore, which I found really fun. The boss was a let down though.

This is actually my favorite temple in the game, I always loved how challenging it was, really tests your problem and puzzle solving abilities more than the other ones, if you aren’t paying attention you can easily miss a key lol. I really liked the ambience too. The forest temple is my second favorite

I love this dungeon. I always find the Fire Temple to be a chore and that it doesn’t have the same kind of ambience as other adult dungeons. Like it’s menacing not because of the dungeon but because of the boss. But this one feels menacing in itself. Like a test of resolve and composure.
