Water thrown into lava lake creates explosive results 

Depends on how rapidly the heat is put into the water, The latent heat of vapourisation needs to be overcome first. Saying that water on contact with a medium of above ca 380 degrees celsius can be explosive. Boiling kettles do not explode.

I was just thinking it was probably the steam that caused all that.

i mean, it was also a lot of water in a pretty decent size container so it probably plunged pretty deep in there before finally turning all that water into vapor

The water evaporates as soon as it gets close or on the surface of the lava, this means there is no water evaporating beneath the lava to create pressure caused by steam as shown in the video. The can in the video sunk and the pressure was created by the steam which escapes in an 'explosive' manner.
