Great instruction and cute painting! Love the fireflies. I really love combining watercolor and pastel. I use pastel pencils for the details as I have so much trouble getting the chunky pastels to be where I want them.
I love this demo. It’s always puzzling to me how you can do many thin strokes with the same plump stick of pastels! I am learning how to work with sticks and the little I have done consistently yields me rounded stumps! I will try to get into a habit of rotating my stick as I lay down marks. That might do the trick? We ‘ll see! That you for the video!
A lovely under-painting! I like the use of different surfaces I really wonder if the pastels stick to the clear gesso long term? Does the addition of marble dust or pumice create a lasting painting? I know the use of sanded papers is considered one of the most reliable surfaces, yet I dislike spending all of my money on papers! I look forward to your making some pastels from your shards too! Thanks friend, and I have been using the clear gesso for years and it has worked well for me. Your question is a really good one though and I’ll see if I can do some more research on that. I do know that other artists have used this technique and I have not heard of any challenges. Adding marble dust or pumice works well too.
I just discovered your channel today and I am in love with your work this painting I just did was my pastels and I think it is my favorite piece of art I did so far it was so much fun and I felt so joyous during the process of painting it thank you so very much for creating wonderful top content to share with us and I hope to see more sweet little animals in your paintings soon!

This is my first use of an underpainting. My next step is to get some clear gesso, so the little owl will have to wait a few days. I've only just taken up pastels a few months ago and was excited to see this project to practice. I did not have watercolors for the underpainting, but used water-soluble wax pastels. Hopefully this will not effect the clear gesso layer.
