Hi Everyone!
In this annotated tutorial I’m going through basic steps of value study and layering painting technique in watercolor. I show how to do the first wash, paint and connect one big shape of middle values and finish with darks to emphasize details and shadows. For the subject, I chose a little street in Italy with beautiful dramatic shadows. This gave me a nice range of values to demonstrate.
Feel free to ask any questions!

What type of paper is this please
@nvfineartstudio7296

Hi Priyadarshini, for the value study I used cheap Amazon 100%cotton watercolor paper (300gsm); for the painting, it was 100% cotton 300gsm watercolor paper from a local art store (rough surface). If you're in Australia, I can give you the brand, but it's not available to the rest of the world. But honestly, I would not recommend it. It is very uneven in thickness and water holding capacity (dries very unevenly/unpredictable/hard to work wet on wet). Recently, I've been only using Arches, Saunders Waterford, Bao Hong. Hope this helps. Cheers, Nina

Why make two and double work. The photo can be referred to for the values. Can you please explain
@nvfineartstudio7296
@nvfineartstudio7296 3 года назад
Watercolor is a very tricky medium and you need a plan before you start. Value study is the plan. The grey scale photo is just a photo, it shows everything, but you need just one big mid value shape, so you know where to loose or find edges. This way your painting will read better. If something doesn't work on value study it will not work on the painting. Hope this helps.

How do you know where the shadows and highlights would realistically fall?
@nvfineartstudio7296
@nvfineartstudio7296 Год назад
Hi Alexi, here I painted from a reference photo, but if I need to invent a shadow or highlight, it depends where the sun is coming from and the angle of the sun. The position will dictate the direction of the shadow and the angle will dictate the length.

Nice but where is resource pic or was it imagination?
@nvfineartstudio7296
@nvfineartstudio7296 2 года назад
Dear Colleen, thank you for your question. I didn't include the subject photo, as this tutorial was not about the subject, but more about the technique. I wanted to focus viewers attention on "painting in layers" without thinking does it look like photo or not (light values - first layer, mid values - second layer and the last darkest darks and details). This technique can be applied to any subject. I demonstrate it again in my latest tutorial (posted yesterday, no photo again, it was just my imagination). If youd like to give this technique a go I think it might be valuable to have a look. Cheers, Nina

Hi Nina.. very nice set of videos.. when painting the middle value big shape.. is it only the shadows of objects in the pic being connected?
@nvfineartstudio7296
@nvfineartstudio7296 Год назад
Thanks Satish! Yes, anything that is below/darker than tonal value 5 (out of 10) being connected. You can say it's shadows, because if it's in light it is above value 5 (lighter than value 5).

could you please tell me which brushes do you use? I need to be ready before participating your workshops :)
@nvfineartstudio7296
@nvfineartstudio7296 Год назад
Hi, I usually use large and medium mop style brushes, such as Escoda Aquario #18 and #14, for details Escoda Perla #10 or 12. Or NEEF brand equivalent in style/size. Or Dainayw natural mops #5, #3, #1 (Dainayw pack of 3 cost around $40). But, please feel free to use whatever you already have and got used to. If you pain on 1/4sheet paper or smaller, you may need only medium size mop (10-8mm) and a pointy synthetic (6mm) for details.
@efe4883
@efe4883 Год назад
@@nvfineartstudio7296 I use max A3 size paper. In this case 12 man mop is ok? Or I can buy 14 mm, so I can use it for bigger works future ?
@nvfineartstudio7296
@nvfineartstudio7296 Год назад
12mm is great for A3. I believe Escoda Aquario#14 is 11mm. If you are planning to do A2, you would need size#18, which is around 15mm. But I would not recommend doing A2 at the moment, you will need to use spray a lot to keep the wash wet. As soon as you master wet on wet and paint consistency, then the sky is the limit. A3 is optimal size, you can do big enough shapes to practice fast and expressive style, but there are less things to worry about.
