😄👍 Great info!! To expand on your "mix more than you think you need; use paint out of the tube" suggestion... If I'm making a large background wash of one color, I'll take a small bowl and squeeze some of the color into it, add as much water as I need to it, and paint from there. That way it's easy to mix and use. If I ever end up with extra paint left over I just let it dry in the bowl and use it later on. Thanks for sharing!

I've got a trick that works well, especially for larger pieces! I pre-wet my paper with water that I've added some ox gall into then I let it dry. It allows the paint to flow a lot easier and more evenly, If I'm trying to achieve an even wash. As you said though it takes a ton of paint!

To renew dehydrated watercolors, you can also add a drop or two of glycerin, this can slightly reduce the need for the action of adding paint + water.

Definitely use paint from a tube for large washes, dry pans would be nightmare. I use Winsor & Newton and Daniel Smith and just buy tubes nowadays, both set well enough in the pans not to run out when tipped (out sketching), but still re-wet really easily and most don’t dry out badly apart from W&N raw sienna! Adding paint from tube on top of a pan colour is a great suggestion, no waste!

The “schlop and spread” method! I use that all the time but I’ve never seen anyone else do it. I guess because most watercolor paintings are light and airy. I have a VERY heavy hand so I love to do really saturated, dark, moody pieces. And now I know I need new paints because I definitely struggle with the ones I have now. Especially the sepia. I’ve really been wanting to incorporate it more but it just doesn’t pick up.

Wondering which colors you would use to make your own dark or black so you don't have to resort to a flat black ?
@nadinerobinson2290
@nadinerobinson2290 3 года назад
4 parts blue paint, 2 parts red paint and 1 part yellow paint makes a black. Play around with the ratios to get different dark colours.

I think Alvaro Castagnet use a lot of very dark and big parts of his paintings. He has some youtube videos, unfortunately not especially about this topic, but man can some tricks to "stole" from him :))) Mostly the dark color comes from the contrast, not from the own color of the tube :)

I’m part way through this video, but I have a question. If you’re having with a color (even good quality) from a pan and it does not rewet or stay wet very long in the pan or on your paper, could you not make it up some on your palette and add a drop of glycerin for longer paint times and better flow?
@LironYan
@LironYan 7 месяцев назад
Hmmm, I think it should work (: I experimented a little with glycerin in the past and it does help keep the paint wet for longer
@sunnycharacter
@sunnycharacter 7 месяцев назад
@@LironYan I usually add a few drops in a batch of my higher granulating pigments when I make watercolor paint. Seems like those took a bit more to rewet.

The issue I have the most is my paper drying too fast. Idk why I have such a hard time with it, I've tried so many different paints and papers.

Why would you squeeze fresh wet paint out of the tube and then "let it dry in the pallet"?? Isn't the point that you want it wet to able to move it around? Beginner question cos I'm a beginner. :)

@LironYan

This was just pure black paint. Don’t remember the exact one, but it’s by white nights. Usually I mix my black colors with my primary colors (French Ultramarine / Phthalo Blue, Quinacridone Rose / Pyrrol Scarlet, Yellow Ochre / New Gamboge) 🤓

First of all, WHERE DID YOU GET THE BERSERK VOLUMES? I didn't know they were sold that way. They're probably not in English, are they? I'm crazy about Berserk. I'm pulling out my hair trying to figure out what the Skull Knight means and who he is and what his relationship to the GODHAND is. lol. I totally got sidetracked by your background. That black is really, really black. I was surprised. It's so flat looking. I'm so used to making blacks.
@LironYan
@LironYan 3 года назад
Haha 😂 It’s the Deluxe edition, and yes - it’s in English!! Got books 1,2 and 4, and each contain 3 volumes! The hiatuses are going to kill us, when I finally caught up about a year ago I didn’t realize what I was getting myself into! And I usually mix my blacks too (: But with this one the focus was on an even dark wash, not necessarily the variation 😉 (I have other vids on that)
@kimberlyporter9555

@@LironYan I know, I learned to mix blacks with your videos. Did you buy the berserk volumes from a website? I wonder if Casca will side with Griffith and throw us all off. And the mystery of the moonlight boy and Griffith inhabiting the same body.

Hey super delayed but better than never! I got these off Amazon (: Plus they can be found here locally, so that’s an option too. The last chapter was completed insane, I won’t spoil in case you haven’t read it. But it’s really something. And just in time for another crazy holiday-season hiatus 😂😰
