Just FYI I’ve returned many things to Temu always got a credit never had to return the product.yes a protection page is normal on blocks.

Thank you for your comments! Yes, my first time with a watercolor block, so that page threw me for a loop since it is not in the pads or spiral bound books, but now I know it is a common thing. I also had an Artbeek block that I had not used, and after this video, I took the cellophane of it and saw it had a protective sheet as well, but theirs was brown kraft paper so it was quite obvious. As for returns, just this week I came across my first experience with a return that they actually wanted me to send back to them. It was for a pair of fleece-lined rain pants that were supposed to be size XL, but fit more like a size US 6-8 (small/medium). They were very well made, soft fabric, but too small for me (and usually wear a size 10). Not sure if I will actually return them, or just gift them to a friend.

I only use Strathmore 500 ready cut for gouache and acrylic gouache. It’s really nice for those mediums. I won’t use any of their other papers.

I'm not sure if I have bought any of their 500 series paper yet, but thanks for your comment! It might be good to buy a pad of it to include when I get around to making a video with side-by-side comparisons of different papers. I just know their 300 series is awful, even for a complete beginner, and their 400 series is passable (but there are better options for the same price point). One challenge is that, once you have painted on Arches a few times and seen how your paints behave on 100% cotton paper, you then realize what is really missing with all these other brands of wood pulp paper. And I don't paint much with gouache (a little bit), or acrylics, but those might not be quite as impacted by wood pulp paper as the watercolors are, due to techniques that rely on colors to blend into each other and the way water is used to control flow. Even a not-so-great 100% cotton paper is way better for watercolors than any of the wood pulp papers. Do you have a YT channel of your own? I would love to see your art.

@@beyondthejournal Strathmore 500 is cotton. Smooth, even the cold press, which is why I use it for acrylic gouache and gouache. I prefer my watercolors on paper with more texture so I use Arches or Fabriano 140 lb cold press but my absolute favorite is Fabriano cold press 300 lb.

Academy paper is the student grade paper. Baohong is the artist grade paper. You used a larger brush on the academy paper and so it had more water on the paper than on the Art Beek paper. Also, equal amounts of water in each brush stroke means that the colors will not bleed. To get a nice bleed, one color needs to be wetter than the other. The heavier the water in brush stroke will always travel to the less water. Also, all paints and colors are not the same and some paints and colors tend to travel more than others. They do have a colored sheet on top that is a protective page.

Thank you! You do know more than me about such things. I had no idea that the "Academy" version was student grade, and "Baohong" was the artist grade. Super useful to know that! Some of these pads I bought are "Boahong" but I didn't notice much different in price on TEMU. I did buy a block of Artbeek awhile ago, and after making that video finally took the cellophane off of it to see and compare = and discovered that they also have this extra sheet on top (but theirs was brown craft paper, so was very obvious). So I guess that is just a standard thing with these blocks. Still figuring out the water control aspect of things, but how I applied it to the new paper was pretty similar to what I have done on other papers (though maybe not elegantly or correctly, just my consistent way). Do you have a RU-vid channel where you post watercolor tutorials (or at least some "show & tells" of your work)?

Someone commented that you were painting on a protective cover? I don't know, but I figure the "not impressed" is from the cheap , chalky, paints. We can always keep our fingers crossed for at least a "good student grade" on the super bargain wcs from Temu or other sellers like them. But we should not be stunned when get cheap for cheap, especially in watercolors. But like you said, at least you got a nice tin!

Hope you continued watching - because I eventually did realize what the problem was. I had never used a glued "block" of paper before. The paints were actually fairly good.

It looks like You painted on the protective cover sheet, you need to remove that to get to the cotton paper.

@@beyondthejournal I didn’t continue watching sorry, I have stage 4 cancer that has travelled to my brain and can only keep attention for short periods of time. There’s nothing wrong with the Paper from Temu BTW, though I prefer the Meeden 100 % cotton paper - there’s not a lot of difference though.

Sorry to hear! Sending you a virtual hug. I did eventually realize that these watercolor "blocks" have a protective sheet on them, and once I got past that, it was an entirely different story! Turned out to be really great paper. Someone else who was more familiar with this brand posted a comment in the feed here below that their "Academy" version is the student grade, and their "Baohong" version is the professional grade. Both are manufactured by Meeden.
@Kyomiibrown

@@beyondthejournal Yes, that’s correct but there isn’t a lot of difference between the 3. I prefer Meeden paper (direct from the Meeden website) as colour appears brighter. Not keen on their paints though.

I had no idea they made yet a 3rd version of the 100% cotton paper -- now I will have to go check that out! Once I got past that protective sheet, I was so impressed that I've since bought much more of it from TEMU. But I will have to go investigate their website directly now...

I have never had Baohong paper buckle. Did you remove cover page from the block. I couldn't believe how much it was buckling. I have never bought paper from Temu only Amazon or Ali express.

@@beyondthejournal I must have missed the end. Good you worked it out. I just couldn't understand why it was happening.
