Interesting! Seems like it doesn't hold a lot of paint, but gives lots of options for changing the contact surface and stroke. TV painting instructors have been spreading the word about fan brushes for decades (Bill Alexander called it the "Almighty Fan Brush") to the point where it almost seems like a magic wand! Great results with this fun experiment!

Yes, I’m so unfamiliar with fan brushes in general-I’m sure there are many good quality fan brushes that may have been easier to use and hold more paint. If you have good recommendations please let me know! 🙂 Thanks for checking out the video!

Love the way you used the end of the brush! 😅The painting came out quite well. Some artists swear by fan brushes, and others swear at them! (I tend to fall into the latter category.) They look so useful in videos, and I have never had much luck with one. This type of video using a specialty brush, in conjunction with other standards, would be most welcome.

Ahhh the fan brush! I always pass by these at the art supply shops, pause for a bit and then say “nah” 😂 Though for some reason they do seem like a good idea for acrylic and oil (but maybe that’s just me, watching too much Bob Ross). Now, the DAGGER brush… that one makes for a great one-brush challenge… it’s great for both fine and broad strokes. Definitely worth checking out! 😺

the dagger brush seemed nice, but i prefer to have them separated. cause when doing thin lines, it's easy to splatter paint... but i like it when i can only have 1 brush, when travelling or such.

The brush set I bought had besides the standard rounds and flats, a liner and a cat's tongue brush. Out of curiosity I just recently bought a dagger and it was a learning curve. If you are into florals I think the dagger is great for all the leaves and petals though.

Hi, Emily! This was fun and interesting to watch, and definitely, you deserve five stars for it! * * * * * I am really happy that you have discovered this little-understood brush's versatility. I think it would have been a lot harder for detailing with a soft-hair fan brush, but I'm pretty certain you'd find a way to make that work, too. BTW, in my book, it isn't cheating to use the pointed end of the brush. 😄 I think that the paper possibly wasn't helping you with what is a very stiff-bristled wee beastie. It does best on better quality cotton (but I think Arches would be too soft? I don't know, though, as I haven't used a fan brush on it), and at the other end of the spectrum, not to be used too heavily on a pulped paper, but even so, your end result was definitely five stars! And yes, definitely a brush for trees, foliage, grass and other textures. Hope you go on experimenting with it! 😊

OMG, I recently bought fan brush and was tempted to use it several times but as soon as it touches the water fibers separate. Makes me put it down and continiue with good old round brush. I might used it for splatter few times. I saw some people used it for blending watercolors this was one of the reasons I bought it. But I don't paint this way often. It is still a cute brush to have, no regrets buying it.

you didn't use the fan brush in my favorite way! dry brush pushing up to make the grass, I also love to paint large pine trees with it. I have three fan brushes my favorite is a large acrylic brush its scruffy and prefect for grass with my watercolors. I have a thick, soft brush for watercolor that I haven't used much because it is so soft. and a medium sized that is stiff and scruffy like the acrylic brush and it is well used too! I guess I can get the soft brush out and use it for a challenge! I've had the stiffer brushes for over 40 years.

Thank you for this fan brush challenge! I have one that I received as a gift that I have literally never used, but since I primarily paint landscapes and en plein air, I will definitely reach for it the next time I need to do some foliage. I'm curious about your comment about the Strathmore paper. Can you share some more info on why it isn't high on your list? (I love it.)
@EmilyOlsonArt
@EmilyOlsonArt Год назад
Thanks for the comment, Jay! I hope you’ll give your fan brush a try! The Strathmore paper is good-it handles multiple layers of wet on wet pretty well, tape and masking fluid. This was on a pad, rather than a block, which makes warping and rippling more of a problem. That’s probably MORE the reason I considered this pad my “play” paper. :-)
@jayboehm3382
@jayboehm3382 Год назад
@@EmilyOlsonArt - Makes sense! It also has less "tooth" than, say, Arches, of course.
@MrsBarnabas
@MrsBarnabas Год назад
@@jayboehm3382 I really thought I'd actually got through an ArtTube video without the mention somewhere of the 'Almighty, all-conquering Arches'. Well, I guess I didn't... 😄 Ok, I exaggerate slightly but seriously, only slightly. There are some equally good papers out there! I know. I use some of them. It's incredibly frustrating as a tutor to hear, continually, that for top quality watercolour paper, "it has to be Arches." But that's why it's probably so over-priced and over-hyped... Oh, before you ask, yes, I have used it. I love experimenting with paper! 😄
@jayboehm3382
@jayboehm3382 Год назад
@@MrsBarnabas - I was using Arches as a comparison, not as a recommendation, because I know Emily uses it from time to time. In my experience, the Arches cold-pressed has more texture than the cold-pressed of other manufacturers. In any event, my personal favourites are Winsor & Newton, Strathmore, and SM-LT.
