Café Watercolor - Eric Yi Lin paint more often. I like acrylics, water color, and I’ve been getting super excited about colored inks now. If I had more room I’d use oil which is sooo luxurious to use but I’ve got a puppy who would get into it. But my New Years resolution is to just do more even if it’s just practice.

I used to have a dog that would sneak into my studio and pull out the arches watercolour pads (only the arches even though I had a variety) and make a meal out of them. I was told that this paper is sized with fish gelatin… I guess he could smell this. He also would eat old hardcover books. When you mentioned the smell of arches it made me smile. Thanks for this video. I love your painting.

For anyone watching who likes these materials but wants a simpler and less expensive setup, here's what I did: Daniel Smith 15ml Primary color set Princeton Neptune #8 quill, Escoda #12 versatil, Silver black velvet #8 Bee Paper 100% cotton 6x9 50 pack, Arches 10x14 cold press Homemade easel at 40* (you can use a phone to measure the angle) Set up near a window or use a Cree 5k flood light All this should keep you under $150 and Will give you professional results. Hope this helps.

How do you like the bee paper? I want to order some but it's hard to judge paper without feeling it.
@greghorsky2747
@greghorsky2747 4 года назад
@@randommcranderson5155 It's good paper, 100% cotton and I think the 50 pack is like $14. It's only 6"x9", but I find that it's perfect for small sketches or mixing/swatching. Any bigger and I'd get something else, though. The Arches 9x12 pad is usually relatively affordable. If there's one thing I'd advocate it's good paper.

@@randommcranderson5155 I think you might be happier with etchr cold press sketch books 3 pack. or for regular use I actually tried SM LT finnish paper its about 39 to ship to usa. the shipping is a bit higher but im really enjoying this paper. arches cold press 300 lb (heavier paper heavier washes, less buckling, and for a lighter paper I enjoy fabriano artistico ULTRA WHITE hot press 140lb. Not everyone can have a dedicated Painting space. I don't and setting myself up to paint requires so much thought so I don't obstruct anyone that my motivation is dead simply juggling things in my head. Plus clearing up afterwards is another chore. . Hence I rarely paint 🙁

It's the setting up and putting away of art materials (like board brushes pallet water etc) that is the problem for me. I have paint only bed. I have floor space at all
@farmwife7944
@farmwife7944 4 года назад
Birjees Hussain most people do not have painting spaces like in this video. If you can locate a kitchen tray or a small box, you could store your supplies on that , store it under your bed, pull it out and set it on your bed to paint. In that box you need a small travel watercolor set of colors in a metal or plastic case, a couple watercolor brushes (a flat and a size 6 round) a pencil, a pad or journal of watercolor paper and a cup for water. You can use the bottom of the box or tray as your table, just be careful with your water so it does not spill on the bed, a sturdy coffee cup would not tip very easily. If you could sit on the floor to paint that would save your bed from water spills. Do not be discouraged by not having lots of supplies or a special area. You can have fun and do nice projects no matter where you are. Personally I like to paint outdoors and I store my supplies in a cloth bag or a tool box which is easy to store and I sit on a folding chair or the ground and balance my supplies in my hands, my best work has been done that way. Good luck and have fun.
@sharonoddlyenough
@sharonoddlyenough 4 года назад
I have a folding table and I keep all of my supplies in an old bread box. I'm lucky enough that I can mostly leave it set up, but when it's put away, it takes me about 5 minutes with another couple minutes for setting up my water

You can buy Arches (including blocks) at Michaels craft store, where you can also use a coupon (at least 40% off, but sometimes 50% or even 60%). They take coupons from nearby craft stores as well, like AC Moore, Joanns, and Hobby Lobby. You can get on their email list to send you coupon notifications or check their website before you go.

My experience with Michael's is that they often mark up name-brand merchandise up to double the usual retail price, so even with the coupon I wasn't always getting the best price. If I needed something quickly and immediately (instead of driving to a distant actual art store), yes, always bring a 40% coupon along!

Many thanks. I have found the exact opposite with SW and Arches. I have a lot more open working time with SW. I like the SW sizing much better that whatever Arches has. Arches is always spotty and inconsistent for me. I've tried all their paper and always have trouble. I will not get it ever again. I have wanted to try the paper from China but since its like Arches I will not waste but save for SW.😁👍

Fabulous - you take complex concepts and make them more accessible. I also really appreciate your comment about getting us to practise!!!! I taught art and design for twenty years and always emphasized the importance of doing more and more work. There is no substitute. Thank you for what you do. Keep going!! You are making a great positive difference. Also - an idea for you - show folks different ways of introducing multiple colours into a painting. Only using one tube colour for an area tends to make it dull. Adding other warm and or cool tones makes a painting come alive. Demos please! You will be giving watchers "permission" to play with their colours. Also - talk about the incredible importance of lighting. It makes bland images come alive! You could also help folks be talking about drawing - I know this is a series about painting however without a solid drawing there cannot be a solid painting. So much to show. So much to learn. Cheers.

Reading this a bit late (in August 2020) but like your suggestions! I have fewer (but I think better!) brushes - two Escoda Réserva Kolinsky (16 and 12), plus a smaller Raphael series 8404 no. 6. I like your suggestions about paper. I agree with your view on Arches, which is a bit too “sized” (surface glue) which interferes with washes. The best paper I know is Amatruda from Amalfi in Italy. Quite expensive, but it has practically no sizing and produces exceptional wet on wet results but you have to get used to it. Otherwise I agree that Saunders Waterford is a very good paper (will try the Chinese brand you recommend). Agree with Daniel Smith as the current best paints, have a different palette (of course). I swear by Moonglow instead of Neutral Tint or Payne’s Grey; a beautiful slightly purple/blue grey. (I “borrowed” this colour from David Taylor.) I’m still looking for a decent replacement for New Gambodge. Thanks for your videos! You have a very nice loose painterly style.

Thank you Eric. I'm recently retired and have been dabbling in oils, acrylics and water colors. After watching a few of your videos I think my resolution for 2020 is to concentrate completely on watercolors for this year. I have watched hundreds of videos on You Tube and yours seem the clearest, most concise and most practical of any I have watched. I am currently in a water color class at local museum, but even there the instruction is not as clear. Please keep up your efforts. Happy New Year.

Be careful with alizarin crimson. It fades within a short time. Buy alizarin crimson hue or permanent alizarin crimson instead. Great video thank you

Hi there Eric, first of all, good luck with your goals this year. One of my goals for this year about watercolor is to be more consistent with my style since i tend to experiment too much, which is great for a while but some consistency in the procedures and style i think is also necessary at least for a year or something. Thanks for your videos bro.

It is definitely more expensive to buy them here because it is international order, and they will have to ship it here. However, I still find it cheaper than most European brand. =)
