The first one is very beautiful and well-done, but I personally think the shadows could have used a little more transparent orange in it to warm them up. Subsurface Scattering on human skin makes it more complicated to paint realistically and there's no set rule on how to achieve realism since it depends on the context of things like setting and lighting, but scientifically speaking, light will make shadows warmer because of how it goes through the cells and reflects off the plasma and blood in our bodies. To be specific, the pigments used aught to be transparent instead of opaque so that they don't overpower the other colors being used. You aren't legally obligated to use transparent pigments or anything, but in my opinion and experience, it helps. The paint tubes will tell you if the pigmemt is transparent, opaque or somewhere in between. They don't have to be totally transparent, but in my opinion, they shouldn't be totally opaque in most cases. The detail of pigment transparency may not apply to gouache since gouache is a medium meant for more opacity. This is all my opinion and nobody is obligated to follow itor agree, especially since this may not apply to every situation or piece. I am simply sharing my opinion based on my experience and why my opinion is the way it is.
