I am very happy to see this! So many watercolor artists insist that you should only have split primaries and maybe one or two other colors and if you have anything else you're an actual monster and don't understand color theory. It's a very limiting mentality, in my opinion. These colors are all so beautiful and unique!
I have a “fun” palette too…no rules just favorites and new to me colors. I recently created a nongranulating palette too…all in addition to palettes by brand plus my super large studio palette. I love your “swatch with me” videos. Thanks.
I always love your swatching videos, it’s so relaxing. But even better than that I love to get to see into your world. Your color choices are so yummy. My color collection has grown extensively since I found you. Thanks for sharing your love of all things watercolor with us.
I really appreciate you sharing these beautiful colors! Especially the pigment info as I can try some of these recipes on my own... Thank You Denise! I'm usually kind of a lurker when it comes to commenting on your videos. I feel so uneducated when it comes to Watercolors so I'd rather not say much but somehow I feel like I know much more when I watching your videos. I'm just so happy to have you back on my feed! Favorite Red-leaning Purple mix is White Night's 312 Vermillion Hue + 325 Claret + 521 Ultramarine Deep
Hullo Denise, I do enjoy watching your videos! You are so amazing and inspirational too. I have changed the paints in my palettes so many times over the years. Different colors, brands even palette surfaces! I have a 40 well studio palette with my most used paints. I have switched to porcelain plates for specialty paint colors/brands. They stack up easily and storage is not a problem. Thank you for sharing all of your positive painting advice! I still have 1 Grumbacher paint. I have replaced mostly DaVinci in my studio palette removing so many other brands. I used to think that I had to keep my paints segregated, thankfully I discovered your channel and I believe that you have enriched my watercolor journey and I have to say Thank you. Please take care, be safe and keep creating wonderful art and sharing videos with us. Have a lovely day.
It is so good to see you back! I’ve been watching for a couple of weeks slowly catching up w the “new’ (most recent) videos and it’s great to have you back on YT. You’ve been missed!
I do think there's a lot of pressure for your everyday palette to be "typical" instead of what you wanna or do use. Love the auxiliary palette--super nice colors and yet so very "Denise" with all the earth colors 😂😂😂
That really is a. Indulgence palette. Lovely colours. My list is just too long, but definitely a number of Aquarius, DS and Kremer pigments that I really cannot justify acquiring would be on it. If I have a successful winters painting maybe! I like your earthy and soft colours…. Your video is like being in a cake shop where you have been invited to taste every cake on display! I have one immediate want, serpentine genuine….. nice video….
I love that you have all the Schmincke super g colors on your +1 palette. My studio palette is full too and I always find myself reaching for other colors too. I’m definitely going to try this idea! Thanks Denise.
Thanks, Aimee! I do have a separate palette of just Schminkce granulating colors (there's a video here), but I definitely wanted my favorites closer at hand :)
@@InLiquidColor girl me too! I have a palette of only Super G AND another one of only Schmincke! ...and I'm always reaching for them for "extra colors"....
Ah, this is just what I needed!! I've been putting together my dream palette and have one spot left for another color. I've been trying to decide what I wanted to add and wanted to add a fun color! Love the video 🥰
I always feel the pressure to have a limited mixing palette. I have so many beautiful granulating colors, so I put together a secondary palette of granulating Purples, blues and greens. It helped me to organize in my head as well as when I am creating landscapes.
Love this. Nice to see the secondary palette; such a nice complement to your main palette. Includes a lot of the colors I've come to love watching your Swatch series and in my own exploration within brands. Mahogany brown and Manganese Blue! Just ordered some W&N Chromium Black on closeout from Jerry's and got the new Titan Buff from Da Vinci and enjoying it
Hey Denise! This video is perfect timing, I’m looking to add new colors to my palette. I always look forward to watching your videos! Hope all is well and keep up the great work :)
My brain immediately responded-"Wait you mean there's a difference." I have some of your extras-but I WANT the DaVinci Cobalt Turquoise Deep & the Stone Ground Florentine Green.
Always use a limited palette in paintings. However, love color and swatches and color charts and finding awesome mixes. Sometimes buy a color just to see how it swatches and mixes. Love the creations with Cobalt Turquoise because of the beautiful separation and granulation. Just purchased WN Mauve PV16 to see why people rave about it. Currently in the process of setting up a studio palette. It's been a struggle because I don't want to go dig for colors in the middle of creative adventures. Love your channel, long and short videos. TFS.❤❤❤
A limited palette for a given painting and having a large collection of paints aren't mutually exclusive 🥰 I generally only use a few colors in a painting, but those colors changed based on the subject :) thanks so much for the kind words!
Hello dear denise... i have enjoyed this video so much. Love the granulation of the colors and the way it gives life to some artwork.... I have tried to have a primary palette and have a mini one with the colors that I love.... for example I have read the recommendations about DS Moonglow, but I think is a fun color, and even it fades, it still shows the temporary stuff of the art
I love these colors! May I ask, is forest blue more of a convenience color? Since you have both pigments on their own on the same palette, it caught my eye!
Yep! Definitely a convenience color. I have some attention/object permanence issues, so I often forget about fun color combos if they're not right in front of me.
I was "raised" in the traditional "semi-limited" pallette concept and it took me years to understand why so many pallettes artists were using had over 18 colors. "Never use straight color" was a rule so all the people using convenience colors straight didn't make sense to me. I now understand that we all figure out what works best for what we paint and it is ok to have "just fun" colors lol
I’m in love with so many of these colors. I have a few of them and I do agree that they are not necessarily needs. However, I can’t help but want them really, really badly. 😬
I have the Paul Reuben (24 set “4th” & your already filled 24 pallet set. Also have Payne’s grey by DS & as a beginner, building a pallet box next to me & which colors (as a beginner) should I have closet to me in box squares? Think put separate warm & cool colors as not sure yet how to use all colors in one painting but done swatching on all! Any suggestions from water color artist’s on how set up colors in the box (due to neck & back issues) & have one for acrylics but water color just learning so many new things & now need Dr. Martin’s Bleedproof white as Posca pens can go bit wild when open! It’s big enough to hold my two jars of water & has decent size sections that can be made bigger! Tyvm as learning so much from your videos!!
Oh, I absolutely love the selection of extra colours here, they are all so pretty! Also, do you know if we can support you by using affliate links, if we are not from the US and therefore use another amazon version?
Thank you Madeleine! I appreciate the support. I believe I'd have to do a lot of work on the back end of the Amazon links to benefit from other Amazon sites, but I appreciate the thought!
Wait - you mean you can create a system that is more streamlined and orderly than having multiple palettes, stacked up on your desk, or in drawers? Lol! Thanks for the demo. Now I need to figure out how to limit my color "needs". 😉
Ha! It happens to all of this. I'm sure I'll still be like "where's my QoR quin magenta??" (a near miss for this palette that may have to get added in a corner lol).
I have quickly discovered that there is no such thing as a perfect palette. It seems it is more there are the perfect colours for each painting and I am just going to have to accept that.
Didn't know Qor released a buff titanium, it looks more light than any other buff titanium I've seen. I love that YinMin Blue & Manganese Blue, very unique blues I don't have yet. This pallete is very warm & snug like a hug, I like it.
One of my favorite happy colors is duochrome artic fire by daniel smith....I think it's totally okay to have what you want in a pallete vs what you think you only need sometimes. It sure makes it more enjoyable to me. While I think it's important to learn color mixing and the basics like most artists teach...it's just more fun to have some granulating convenience mixes as well. Wonderful video Denise! 🥰
these are all so beautiful! wonderful video as always, I'd definitely love to pick up some of these in the future as they all look amazing! are a few of them like spinel brown a little opaque or are they just more non-granulating and i'm mistaking it for that? i don't personally mind opaque paints as long as they're nice quality, though!
1) I am curious why Titan Buff vs. say Daniel Smith's Buff Titanium. Is the QOR version different than other brands? 2) Also do you think the Mayan Dark is very different than Sodalite? 3) I love the Violet Iron Oxide and Mars Black, which are so great for landscapes. 4) I will have to buy that Florentine Green. So pretty!! Thanks for the fun video!!
No reason for QoRs Titan Buff, just that I had a tube on hand when I poured this palette. Mayan Dark Blue is much more blue and less granulating than Sodalite. I tend to use MDB as a dark blue and Sodalite as a granulating "dark neutral" or Payne's grey-ish type color. The Florentine Green is even more gorgeous in person, I promise!
@@Foghorn-tr1je it's the same pigment but does not look like any other PG17 I've ever seen. Slightly less opaque than usual and it has granulation instead of being smooth.
Funny to watch this now cause I did this last week. Wasn't planning on it. Couldn't sleep so I got up from bed and went to do some painting but it was late, not much light, so I decided to do something else instead. I took out my swatches I started picking out my favorite colors, just sensing which colors made me happy regardless of how I would use them. Just enjoying looking at them, but one thing led to another and before I knew it, I was making 2 palettes. 😄 I ended up creating one of my favorite colors and another one for my favorite granulating colors. So now I have them at hand next to my main palette! And is working great for me! 🥰
Denise has spoken to this in previous videos, I can't remember which ones, but its very good to hear her reasoning and the transparency of her choice. I can't be sure for Denise as my memory may be mixed up, but some artists weigh up the longevity of these brushes (10 plus years for some people) and as such this is a more environmentally friendly choice
Thanks Kristen and Amanda. There are a lot of reasons. The TL;DR version is that there is very little transparency in brush companies and neither natural or synthetics are "good." The longer answer is natural hair is obviously not great for animals, but synthetic brush making is often terrible for the environment. Very few companies give information to say they're trying to reduce that impact (I'd LOVE to hear from the ones that do!). "Vegan" on its own is never an indicator of eco-friendly in my eyes. Lots of things are accidentally vegan - or even purposefully vegan - but that doesn't mean it's good for the planet. Also in regards to what Amanda mentioned, I went through synthetics like crazy. It created a lot of waste. SBVs last much longer in my experience, and I could honestly get by with a Round Size 8 for 95% of the painting I do, which eliminates the need for extra liners, mops, etc. :)
Lol I need to learn to separate the wants from the needs. I think 90% of my supplies are "wants" 😅 My brain won't let me mix brands together and it drives me insane OTL
@@InLiquidColor yes...Texas???? not seeing you in that mindset...my cousin has been in Trail Oregon...over 20 years...born and raised in Santee California...near Santiego......she loves the mindset there and the days where the sky is not continuously blue!I visited both places...LOVE the Oregon Coast...those frigging rocks in the ocean...nit floating...but way out there...spectacular...never mind the Redwood foresst and Ashland...is cute
