This week I decided to compare four different watercolour brands, from four different price points!
I selected Winsor and Newton ($16-$40+ / tube), Van Gogh Travel set ($20 for a set of 12 half pans), Derivan watercolours ($8 / tube) and Royal and Langnickel ($1 / tube, sold in a 24 pack from spotlight).
The results I got were quite interesting! It seems the main difference (visually) between the different brands is the level of granulation, and how the pigment reacts with the water. Obviously there are other differences including light fastness, but I chose to focus more on the visual aspect.
I hope you guys enjoy the video! Please leave me some feedback, as I'd love to hear your opinions/experiences with different brands of paint.

Nice video, thanks. I have never used watercolor markers, but I have often wondered how they compare to watercolor paint. I would love to see a side by side comparison.

Thank you for your suggestion! I'll make sure that I film that video within the next week or two :D I'll keep you updated as so when I post it, but know that it's definitely coming! What sort of watercolour paints do you currently use? If I happen to have something similar perhaps I could compare those too for you :)

I have the Cotman sketchers box, which are very nice paints, although you have to work at rewetting them. I have just started buying artist grade paints. I have three Winsor Newton tubes, three American Journey tubes and four White Knights full pans. All of these are really good paints. You can tell the difference with the artist grade paints. I don't have a favorite yet.

I thought this was an awesome video!!! The fact that you only used the 3 primary colors to create the 4 paintings and created 4 extremely comparable pieces is extremely impressive!!! You will also get some of those slight variations in granulation, transparency, and vividness based on how much pigment and filler is in each brand. Definitely subbed to your channel!!! ☃️

Thanks for the feedback! I believe they are the professional series... it was so long ago now (and I've thrown out the packaging) but I'm about 90% sure. I'll keep this in mind for future videos 😁

Ouch... you pay how much for WN? ...I suppose that's one of the few benefits of living in the U.K (there aren't many) I rarely pay more than £7 for 14ml tubes - maybe £11-12 for Series 4. WN has some crazy recommended retail prices but I can usually find them at a fraction of that price online. You find the Big three UK art supplies companies rotate special offers every month on the big name brands so it's just a case of holding out until WN are on offer somewhere.

hahaha no I totally relate - when I found furrylittlepeach and kellogsloops for the first time it was like striking gold... like finally we can talk prices in AUD and units using the metric system, and I don't have to worry about not having hobby lobby or what ever those American stores are haha :)

i like a lot of different art but mainly a lot of surrealism atm, and comic/ manga kinda styles. basically anything that i think looks pretty or strangely pretty yet disturbing. and yeah i have instagram it's poisonedtears12

Very cool! Me too! Back in August I was going to start a body horror series (not extreme horror, just weird and unsettling) but unfortunately I got side tracked with other things. Once my exams for uni are over I'm going to get back into it (hopefully!)

Oi, good methodical video...do a comparison b/n Qor colours and M Graham colours. Do you do gouache ?...Schmincke vs Sennelier vs MGraham...waddya reckon mate ? Also, check out handprint.com. cheers

Paul White hey unfortunately I don't own any of those brands! I have heard great things about M Graham though, would love to pick some up next time I'm in the US. I have done a few other comparison videos on my channel that you can check out if interested. And I do use Gouache too! My latest video was an Acryla gouache painting 😃

Yep they ranged from series 1-4 depending on the colour. I probably wouldn't have been able to afford full-price tubes but my local art store was having a sale on the pans :)
