First, I would like to apologize for a comment I made in the video. Photography IS art and copying art is not something I promote. Copyright infringement is a huge deal - I 100% agree. Im not advocating for anyone to EVER take someones artwork, claim it as their own and profit off of it. I'm purely saying that for personal, and educational use, tracing artwork to transform a beautiful photograph (that is someone elses art) is a great way to learn how to draw. To be covered under fair use, the work would need to be deemed transformative. And i know that this is a hot button topic on youtube right now - so i apologize if my comments sounded like i advocated for someone infringing on anothers copyrighted work.
Sorry had to say something as I have a couple of friends who are really good photographers and they get really heated about people just copying their stuff and some of what they do it is outrageous. At least most artists make something new out of images they see lol. I have seen one of my friends really goid photos cppied for postcards... badly 😲 they got thteatended with court and saw the error og their ways 😂. Thank you for your wonderful videos and really lovely tutorials 😍😘
@@ruthwalton3457 I thought i would point out that there are some sites that have stock images that are free to use with no attribution ( although i usually do give attribution , i use them in photoshop) not affiliated in any way but pixabay is one of them , plenty more
I like this type of series. I’m learning and it’s perfect for me. Seeing the layers is encouraging. What I got from it is - Don’t give up when it looks nothing like your reference photo! Phew! And if you can’t draw - trace it (I already do). It’s a reference photo for private learning. But it is fantastic there are many talented photographers who capture the essence of their subject. That giraffe looked so adorable and curious at the same time ☺️
Hi Emma, I love and enjoy learning from you. I hope you will put closed captions in this video soon. I am profoundly deaf, and depend on it. Not just for me but others, too. I appreciate you for putting closed captions in your other videos! Keep up with your great ideas! Ohhhhh! Closed captions just came up after I made the comment. Thanks, thanks, thanks so much!
I wish I could paint like you! I’m trying to watch all your videos to learn watercolors since I am new at it and the way you paint and explain has really helped me. You make it look so easy! I like this new animal series & I can’t wait for more videos! Thank you!
Hi Emma 👋 u made a really good job of painting the giraffe thanks for sharing and thanks for sharing your tips 👍, I definitely couldn't paint the giraffe I am only just getting to grips with the stunning flowers u paint as I am a very early beginner and someone who really Love's your tutorials have a good week 🦋💞 Lin in South Wales uk
I think it is terrific. So cute. I will try. I am lousy at drawing, but I’ll try. As long as no one sees my reference photo, right? LOL. Also, “Mama giraffe looks like she’s been up all night with her screaming baby...”. 😂. Thanks for sharing the process.
Every time you close your jar of bleedproof white cover it with water. You can pour. New jar half into another jr nd fill with water in both for optimum use..
Love, love , love this so adorable! Sweet personality!! LOL I drew one almost a year ago and i haven't painted it , because i just didn't know where to start! So thank you so much for this.. Oh and recently read "art is in the mess"! LOL So true how your painting emerges from blobs of paint to beautiful art! :)
Emma, I am a professional photographer, and can only speak for myself, but I would be honored if you traced one of my photos to paint it. Also, I love the giraffe painting; it’s cute as can be and I want to try to paint it for my little granddaughter for her room. She loves all zoo animals. Thanks for the tutorial! 🦒 ✨💖✨
Yes, photography is an art, and as such is copyrighted and copying it in any form is copyright infringement. I think folks who aren't selling replications of a photograph are safe if it's a learning experience or for personal use.
I love the challenge and I'd is Ok If like to make a suggestion. While you are sketching of you could make you diagram darker so we can see it that would be very helpful. I have a really hard time seeing a lot of them.
oi people .. be aware of the copy right law with tracing images or art from other's.. it can bring you seriously in troubles. always ask permission or just don't for your own sake. the law says you can use it for yourself but you can't show it to anyone if you copy or trace. if you want to show it to other's you need to ask permission from the owner of the image in any form. but art is to be creative you can create your own art just by being creative and drawing things yourself learns you way more than copying and tracing. practice makes the artist in the end. just be careful folks
Got to do a giraffe now 😂😍😘 love giraffes 😘 Might have to do three as I have three friends who love them but whether they will look like girraffes after i have finished with them 😂😂😂🙈 Wish i could paint like you 😍😘
Also, just want to add that it is not illegal or copyright infringement to use a photograph for inspiration for ones personal use, as it is your interpretation of the image. ALSO, using an image for education falls under the "fair use" portion of the Copyright Act, so most likely you are not infringing in this situation. I am a photographer and took zero offense to your comments as I understood what you meant. I did not in anyway think you meant photography is not art. Copyright is a very grey area and very hard to prosecute. It mostly comes into play when you are copying someones style, likeness or something specifically known; for your profit, especially if it will affect their profit. This image did not capture anything unique to the photographer, in my opinion, anyone with a good quality long lens could have taken this. That being said, if this were my image, I'd appreciate photo credit. So maybe just link to the image you used, that way the photographer is getting traffic.
I might try to draw it but I would not give away or try to sell this. This is an attempt to honor the copyright laws. I do not want to get anyone in trouble. 🐝
I love your work but but have to tell you that I felt upset when you said not to copy anyone's artwork but photography is ok. (Something like that.). I felt that you made it sound like photography is not art. As a photographer for 40 years, I have to tell you that it's just as much art as painting. I hope you will clarify your statement.
Janet Buol I apologize for my statement. Photography IS art and it’s not what I meant at all. I pinned a comment at the top, I hope this clarifies what I meant a bit more. I will also clarify this in my next video. I apologize for upsetting you!
@@EmmaLefebvre Thanks Emma for understanding my point of view. Whether the photo is from a professional or a neighbor up the street, I always ask first. And you know I've never had anyone turn me down. There is just so much out there available that it's easy to find something to work with.
Thank you again. I really only mean’t to use tracing as an educational tool to learn the form of an image for personal use. I hope that’s ok. I don’t want anyone to think I I’m try to capitalize off of anyone’s artwork. I personally find it a struggle drawing animals and the main focus of my videos is to show the watercolour technique. I do apologize again that what I said came of differently than the message I was trying to convey.
@@EmmaLefebvre Absolutely ok in my humble opinion. There is so much practice we can do at our table at home without asking anyone at all. I struggle with animals myself and will keep eye for future videos you have on animals because I need all the help I can get. Right now I am taking an online course on "chickens" and shocked how good that is going. I am learning to look at the reference 10 times longer than I am sketching. Very amazing how much slowing down has down.
Ooooo please don't tell any photographers that ok to copy their work . They copyright too and get very tetchy if you use without permission . Copyright law from 1976 states it us copyriggt from when picture taken or if photographer is emplyed by company then it belongd to the employer. There are a lot of images put into nom copyright sites for people to use
Absolutely, there are so many sites now that offer copyright free images for artists to use in the education and training. There is a sure safe bet to consider.
yes, photography is art, but if a beginner painter needs to copy a photo for reference, the photographer should take that as a compliment. There is no way watercolor will copy the photo EXACTLY, so, i dont think there is an infringement problem. thats just my opinion.
im also adding: if the painter isnt selling their art based off another artists art, i think using a photo off the internet should be ok. in my opinion. 😊
Unless you are the one who took the photo you can be in a lot of trouble tracing from a photo. Photos are artwork as much as paintings are. You are a very good artists, but be careful what you suggest to people who watch your videos.
If you are drawing or tracing for yourself or just as a learning curve. It’s fine. Only might be a problem if you say it’s your unaided work. And you use it commercially
You can't use other peoples photos like that under copyright. Also if your making money from this video which is using someone else photo which you haven't checked is a royalty free image and you haven't changed the image enough in your artwork that it isn't unrecognisable from the original the Artist who created that image could sue you if they chose.
