Hellooo! Hope this video was helpful, whether you're a watercolour newbie or not 😃 limiting my supplies had the BIGGEST impact on my watercolour journey and I hope it helps you too. Please don't hesitate to yell out if you have a question or need help choosing primary colours etc etc. Thanks for watching! ❤

Loving your “nerdiness”! It’s fascinating and I like to understand the why’s rather than just accepting what I’m being told.❤

I just found your channel and stayed here🥰 Good introduction to watercolour painting, for beginners and advanced painters alike. Well explained and with lots of information. I also think it's very good that you also discussed the different paper structures and at least tried out 100% cotton paper. I can also sign it like this, try different papers at the beginning and then determine for yourself which one is more suitable. A tip is to buy tubes, if you only start with three colours. This way, you can prepare the most important mixtures on a plate or palette with the help of a toothpick for mixing, so that you don't have to spend more time mixing than painting later on. These can then be left to dry so that they can be used again later. For the brushes, I am also in favour of a small and medium round and a flat larger one for washes. At the beginning, the fine motor skills are not yet quite as good to paint fine details with a medium round brush. With a detail brush, not so much paint has to be washed out for a colour change for details. For me personally, 6 and 8 are too close to each other in size to have both in one set. I have a slightly different opinion when it comes to the fibres. Budget brushes are completely fine in themselves, but please no Taklon and similar synthetic brushes, unless you want to make watercolour painting difficult for someone. Because these fibres are smooth, they cannot hold as much liquid and do not release it slowly, but rather in one go, and so there is often too much liquid in one place on the paper. When it comes to fluid control, you need as much support as possible from the brush in the beginning. My tip is to make sure that the description of brushes says that they imitate natural hair, or are a mixture of synthetic and natural or are just natural hair. These have a comparatively rough fibres, on which liquid collects better and is released more evenly. That's why I believed for years that watercolour, wasn't for me and preferred painting with gouache until I bought a few high-quality natural hairbrushes with a voucher from an art supply store. I had a real aha moment with these and no longer felt like I was working against the paint.

Hi!! Welcome! And thanks so much for sharing your thoughts! 😀 What an amaaaaazing tip about the tube paint omg, I've never even thought to add pigments together and let them set as a colour mix!!! Genius. Sorry to hear you had trouble with brushes to start with 😔 I never had that experience myself, but I'm so glad you kept trying different supplies until you got that 'aha' moment! ❤

I've been painting for years. This was one of the best advice videos I've seen. Glad to see you're making videos and you now have a new subscriber from the US. I haven't ventured much into painting animals, other than a commission I was more or less forced to do by my family member who promised her brother portraits of his 4 dogs. I had never painted a dog in my life and I started out with one white shepherd and three black labs. What a challenge! Lol. You have saved many beginners a lot of grief with this video if they follow your recommendations. Well done.

This comment made my day, thank you so much! I really appreciate it. And wowww you are brave to go from never painting dogs to the hardest type - black and white fur!!! Hats off to you, I'm sure you nailed it 🙌 thanks again for such a kind comment!

I love this, I spent most of my highschool art life using colour washes and water colours. When I graduated I wanted to continue but without the guidance of an art teacher I found myself very lost. My original water colour set was a 36 colour student grade set. Today I picked up a small 12 colour professional set and I've already found that my art has improved. Not because I went for a more expensive set but because I am not getting overwhelmed by the six different shades of blue, red, yellow and green and how/when to use each one. (Okay tbh the quality of the paint is so much nicer to use and that definatly makes painting more fun)

Amazing!! 😍 so happy to hear downsizing colours has helped reduce your overwhelm too! Happy days of painting ahead!

Just a add. The Hue thing is that some componentes on paints, and that includes watercolors can be ,and will be toxic/carcinogenic. I feel that the best example of this is cadmium. Like cadmium red or yellow, and if I'm not mistaken titanium white use to be made with led. So the hue is trying to imitate that pigment whiteout the toxic components, people are not 100% that this other chemicals are safe, but what they know is that they less toxic. The thing is just be aware when manipulating paint, even acrylics, and check stuff by what they contain, and use gloves if necessary.

Oh that is SUCH a great point, thank you! I totally forgot about the toxic paints, I completely avoid them myself. I'll mention that in the next video about choosing primaries. Reminds me to look up W&N cadmium free range as well and see the difference between them and the cadmium 'hues'. Thanks again!! 🙏❤️

I really identify with the opening of your video - I want to dive into this medium so have been buying all (the wrong) supplies! A month ago I started with GenCraft 48 pan colors, artist loft paper and zen brushes. I've since upgraded to Paul Rubens 24 pan set, Cotman 20 ct tubes and Sennelier La Petite aquarelle 12 ct tubes; Academy 200 gsm & 300 gsm cold & rough press & Baohong 300 gsm cold press paper; as well as several brands / shapes / sizes of mostly round brushes - everything is mid range, and lots of it. I've really enjoyed making washes - blending colors & watching touch bleeds bloom but need to start painting more than swooshes and circles 😂 I'm trying to use the abundance that I've purchased rather than leveling up to professional quality before I've even attempted to master what I have. I found your channel this morning and am hoping you have painting tutorials other than flowers that will help me unlock the potential of of all of these supplies!

Sounds like you've got a great set of supplies there now! I've heard really good things about Baohong paper but never tried it myself. Circles and swooshes are a great way to get to know your supplies though! 😊 you've made me want to create a video on exercises for exactly that. I teach wildlife portraits so there won't be any flowers around here 🤣 (I've never liked painting them anyway!) ❤️
