I love seeing the items artists carry in a small kit, and this was great! I always overpack for fear of running out of something, and end up carrying too much stuff, so this is really helpful for deciding what is essential. Thanks! ♥️💐

So true. Even this is a totally pared down version after realizing I just don't use some stuff a lot at all! Thanks for stopping by.

I know I’m late to this comment section, but you can periodically condition the magnetic part of the palette with a little olive oil or other vegetable oil. I read that tip on the Art Toolkit website.

I like my portable painter with watercups on it an just bought a stablo sketchboard. I think this will be very handy if I want to use my art toolkit mini palet. There’s a cup holder on it. But I like how you can travel so light! 🎉

How do you like your Stablo sketchboard? Sometimes I'm wondering if I should use those too for a non-easel setup!

Awesome video, and I really like to carry barely anything when I go out. I am probably going to start taking some recording equipment in the next few months and just try my hand in this big documenting idea. The Arttoolkit to me is a must, I just love it that much. I do know they say that if the rust gets on you never you can add some oil to the back of the pans and the magnet to help a little but like you said it isn't that big of a deal. Once it gets bad you can just get new pans. We all can't wait to see what comes out of the trip. We wish you fun, good memories, and safety on your trip!

In reply specifically to the rust question: This was an issue with the early Toolkit pans, which were aluminium, but they realised quickly and replaced them with stainless steel. _Rust is no longer an issue with these._ "Once it gets bad you can just get new pans. " That depends on where in the world you happen to be! Importing from the USA is very expensive and at the moment, for example, an ArtToolKit small palette costs double the US price here in France (and 7.50€ on top for postage). Also, we can't buy it with the 14 pan set and would have to buy a separate set, which again is double the price. I could buy it from the UK, but import duties and postage also makes it out of reach. Until ArtToolKit has many more overseas sellers, most of us simply can't afford it! My solution is a small, 12 pan eye shadow box, which is a similar size, lightweight, sturdy, and cost me 4€ at the supermarket. For the travel case? A soft leather shoulder bag, bought at the local market years ago, and which takes the equivalent kit perfectly. Yes, the ArtToolkit products are beautiful, and for sure, I wouldn't turn one down as a gift, but they are totally unnecessary! Good grief! Artists are creative people and we are stifling that creativity with more and more 'essential' equipment instead of working it out for ourselves!!! My plein air kit (both grab-and-go and full-day plein air kit) have been serving me perfectly well for many years! Let's get back to creating our own solutions for a fraction of the price and at the same time, do a bit towards helping our limping planet towards a better future! 😊

Omigosh yes! Please let me know how it goes when you are documenting. It's very fun to look back at, just as how it's fond to look back at photographs and home videos :)

Oh that's interesting. I wonder if mine are aluminium or stainless steel (that still has rust)? I did buy a big batch and am still cycling through my pans. I got lucky and discovered this palette when I was starting out my sketching journey so I'm absolutely in love with the size. But I'm so glad you are able to find a similarly-sized eye shadow box! The tools definitely have to work for you, not the other way around. Thanks for sharing both of your plein air kits!

@@beckyisj You'd know by now, I think, as the pans would already be rusty in HK's humid climate. Stainless steel doesn't rust. The paint holders in our paint boxes are also aluminium (they need to be pliable!), and I've had a small amount of rusting on my oldest box, but it is roughly 25 years old, well-used, and one section of the lid's a little bashed from travelling around the world with me, as well as regular plein air use. It doesn't affect the paint, in their plastic pans. I think it helps that I take great care of my kit, and the box gets washed and dried if I've really sploshed paint around as I played. The others are fine.

Hi, Becky! This was really fun to watch, and to see what you were putting in your art kit. It was rather nice to watch someone else filling a tiny palette, and somehow manage it without getting paint everywhere but where it should be! (I let myself off, because it's a little eyeshadow box and the pans don't come out, but yes, it was messy, but not as messy as it might have been ... 😄) I'm envious of the tripod, but can't justify the expense, and after all, I do have a lightweight metal easel which I haven't actually taken with me till now, as I'm still feeling my way with this 'urban' rather than 'pastoral' landscapes, and my essential sun umbrella takes up a lot of space and weight in my 'art caddy'! You didn't mention where you are going, but I hope you have good flight and a great time! When do you go? 😊

I may have edited the mess out of the video... it was not a great idea to film on my white table! :p It's really hard to justify the price of a lightweight tripod but I'm telling myself that it'll save me from back pain T_T since I have to walk everywhere in Hong Kong, I do have to carry the tripod on my backpack. And my back is already tense enough from working a desk job sadly

@@beckyisj Have you tried swimming to ease your neck and back, Becky? I had hydrotherapy for my back problems years ago, and carried on in the swimming pool. J Eg in the deep end: ... facing the edge of the pool, hold on gently with both hands, curl right up, knees to chest, looking down, then allow the water to lift the legs gently till they're straight out; ... holding on with one hand, breathing gently, and relaxing back side-on to the bar, to allow the water to take the weight (holding on simply stops us from drifting into someone else's length swimming). Count to five, then changing hands. Gradually build up to longer counts - but don't fall asleep - it really is relaxing; ... on your back, kicking the legs, with arms relaxed by your side, then, if your pool allows it, wearing a mask and snorkel, face down, kicking with the legs, arms relaxed by your side - I recommend both of these, highly!! Even better if there’s safe swimming somewhere quiet, because you can enjoy the undersea scenery at the same time! This can make a huge difference to tense muscles, even if you can only manage once a week (though twice a week is better) and it doesn't take a lot of time. If you do go, begin very slowly, with one or two, then slowly up to five curl-and-stretch, then just relax and enjoy the water taking your weight. Build up slowly to a maximum of ten.
