The Finch Hatton Gorge is around 80kms west of Mackay in North Queensland.
It is an easy drive from the Finch Hatton township which is on the way from Mackay to Eungella National Park.
The road in to Finch Hatton Gorge is bitumen to the last few hundred metres where is becomes gravel and is easily accessible by 2wd vehicle although there are 3 shallow water crossings along the way.
There’s a gravel carpark and toilets at the entrance to the park.
Signs tell you what to expect to see along with distances to each location.
We visited twice as once was just not enough. It was even better the second time.
On Day 1 our plan was to go straight to Wheel of Fire waterfalls, the furtherest location at Finch Hatton Gorge and visit Araluen Cascades waterfall on the way back.
The first stop is Rawson’s Creek but there’s not really a lot to see here so we didn’t hang about too long.
After walking approximately 1 km you come to a T junction.
Turn left and it’s a short walk of 410m to the very popular Araluen Cascades.
Go right and it’s off to Callistemon Crossing 400m away before a steep walk up 700m to the Wheel of Fire Rock pool and waterfall.
We then made our way back down to Araluen Cascades and the rock pools there.
The second day we left the carpark at 11.20am and arrived at the T Junction at 11.38am.
5 minutes later we were at Callistemon Crossing
We took 2 minutes to get across the crossing before arriving at Wheel of Fire at 12.03pm
We left Wheel of Fire at 12.51pm and arrived back at the carpark at 1.51pm after a few stops along the way.
