I love how your approach is so matter of fact. Like there is no secret, and any average person can do this to achieve such beautiful growth. Thank you for the explanations, I'm off to make my first moss pole!
I’m looking forward to putting my melanochrysum on my first moss pole! Can’t wait to see the results. Hopefully it works! Please keep making videos, I’m getting so much out of them 🥰
I started making my moss poles about two months ago. They dried out so quickly. Then I came across your video stating the moss had to be tightly packed to retain moisture. Thanks!
I hit the thumbs up when you said plants don't work on a schedule! I really enjoy how you share your understanding of established norm's whether they are right or wrong. So many out there are just repeating info everyone has decided is the answer because its been repeated so often and its a quick and easy way to answer. Makes me think i can watch any video and still learn or pick up at least 1 or 2 new things from you!
Love these awesome ideas you have, very clever and simple to follow. I got all my ingredients and look forward to having a go at growing my plants vertically. So excited 😂
Made my own moss poles yesterday following your tutorial and they came out beautifully. One shorty and one extra long chonky boi for a maturing silver sword.
Hi, Jan! Wondered how your regime/experience is going at your new place , with the watering some of the moss poles outdoors now? Would love to know how that’s going as all of mine are outside as well. Any tips and tricks would be great.!
Do you put a hole at the base of the plastic bottle as well ? because that's the only way we can get the water to drip out besides squeezing it, but then it comes out way too fast, we have put 7 holes in the cap and still nothing comes out 🤔😕
Hello! No thanks to your videos, I decided to up my plant game to let those leaves to mature! Haha😂 In your opinion, do you reckon by adding stuff like leca balls/coco chips alongside the moss in the pole will help to retain moisture longer (and perhaps adding weight to hold the pole down better)? I do not have the luxury of time to attend to my plant often. Thanks in advance 🍻
How can I manage the water distribution between my monstera Thai constellation and its moss pole? The moss pole dries out within four days, but the plant's soil remains moist. I'm worried about overwatering and causing root rot. Btw love your videos always so helpful, thank you 😊
Hi Jan, Thanks for this video, love your moss poles, actually love the way plants are growing on these moss poles 😄 I know the best time for repotting is spring or early summer. But I received a pot (non draining holes but with the wright soil) with 3 gorgeous plants (M. Thai constellation, Ph. florida ghost and Ph. warscewiczii aurea flavum. We're in the middel of summer here. Is it wise to repot them now (after some acclimation time off course). Or wait until spring next year?
Ok, so when I initially turn my bottles over a small amount of water comes out. But because of physics, the flow of water stops after a couple of seconds ...how do you actually get the water to come out that isn't going to take all day? I appreciate your videos..I've already made 4 of your poles, just trying to figure out this watering piece!
Do you know the name of the video where he addresses this issue? I am baffled as to how this can work with a closed system aside from the holes on the bottom. (Cap).
Hi, my question is: how is it good for my plants to be watered by the moss when the pot in the bottom is still wet? I'm afraid of overwatering trying to keep my moss pole wet cause where I live the moss pole can dry in a couple of days while the pot takes sometimes more than one week or two to be dry... Thanks for your help!
I wonder if bottom-watering would work for these moss poles-will there be sufficient capillary action to suck up the water from the bottom up…? Have you ever tried it?
As ridiculous as this may sound, I'd love to see your flipping technique for the water bottle drippers. It's an art (that I have much to learn about 😅)
@@sydneyplantguy I missed that you leave the cap on and put some holes in it - that seems like a critical step haha. I was just flipping it really quick (without a cap) which consistently creates a bit of a mess during the 500ms that the bottle is flipping, but as soon as the mouth of the bottle is resting on the moss, there is enough resistance from the moss to keep it dripping slow. A lid with holes makes way more sense! Thrilled to realize this haha
Nice to meet you! I'm a lucky, I found you in RU-vid! Your all videos are very interesting for me! I have a question... Does Mospol need to be wet all the time? Thank you so much!
Hi.. i just made moss poles for my paraiso & Florida ghost using your method. Thank you so much.. 😊👍🏻 but i just want to know, if i use liquid nutrients for my plants like you did, should i stop using osmocote?
i love how my plants thrive on these mosspoles, thanks! i have one question tho. i notice that some mosspoles develop a white fungus. i only water them when they're crunchy. any idea on how to avoid this?
can't wait to pot up some of my climbers on moss poles!! do you recommend a certain time to do so? i'm in australia too, would around early september be a good time?
It depends on the season, where abouts the moss pole is, the weather, the size of the plant etc. at least once a week but most likely a couple of times :)
Do you use regular tap water always? Just concerned about build up lime scale on my leaves and in the poles, if I where to try these moss poles 🤔 Thanks for the informative video ❤
That's great but... mine poles are not able to sustain vertical position with a bottle on top. How do you stabilize them? I've seen your vidoes about moss poles, I did exact same thing. But still they wiggle...
Hello, I would like to ask, since the medium is so well draining, do u “reuse” the water that is drained for other pots or the water are for one time use ?
Do you think if I were to add a moss pole similar to yours to an already long and established philodendron Brasil would it grow lots aerial roots into the pole eventually or would it be better to start with smaller plants and let them root into the pole as they grow?
Good video! I'm just wondering, have you ever had mold on your moss pole? Last month I made my first moss poles and installed them, after a couple of days a furry layer of mold started appearing on some of them, so I let the moss pole dry out completely. Since then I've just been misting the moss pole, which I guess doesn't do a lot to it. What would you advise doing in this situation? Just keep on keeping them moist?
Hi, In another Video he names some reasons why moss poles can become moldy. 1. Maybe you have packed the moss too tight. (Bad air flow, moss at the inside stays wet) 2. The quality of the moss is very important. Low quality moss can become moldy very quickly. 3. Some mosses continue dead plant roots. You have to sort these out because they can get moldy very quickly.
@@ottifant9723 thanks for your reply and all the information! I looked it up and apparently the white furry mold is harmless. Still I ended up spraying it with some hydrogen peroxide and it has only returned in some tiny spots
Tried this and I don't know why the water doesn't flow out when I hold the bottle parallel to the ground, even just in my hand, 3-4 holes in the lid and the water doesn't come out of the holes (they're all pretty big too). I have to put them at a slight tilt for some odd reason.
I’m having a devil of a time figuring out EXACTLY the size and locations of the holes in your pop bottles?! I’m losing my mind on frustration not being able to keep the water flowing! It either stops or comes out WAY too fast! PLEASE help me?!?
There is no exact size... I use different drill bits and they all work. You need sure the moss slightly touches the holes so it breaks the surface tension
@@sydneyplantguy dang! And I have had even worse luck when it touches the moss of things just stopping…. I don’t know what to do…. I’ll keep watching your videos and maybe someday you’ll show a video of the caps. So there are NO other holes in the bottle? Just two or three in the cap?
I'm doing all this but I'm having trouble with my water bottles not draining at all. Then I go in and make the holes a little bit bigger and they drain too quick. Do you have any advice? Thank you!
Does anyone have a good substitute for US for the AU brand nutrients. I was going to order and ship but they can’t ship liquids. I have used pro blend GROW and dynagrow foliage pro but they seem kinda meh.
Hi! I made my first moss pole and potted a plant with it just recently. I tried the water bottle method and the water didn't seep down even though I left it for 3 hours. The pole is crunchy. What am I doing wrong?
Sounds like the moss might either be blocking the holes or the surface tension of the water isn’t allowing it to release. Wigglenit around a bit until u find the right balance
Thanks to you and your channel, I made my first moss poles! I didn't realize the moss can be stringy. Some of the tiny ones fall out of the grid even though the meshing is quite compact (like yours I'd say). Is it my moss that's the issue or is it how it is?
Thank you for the re-upload ♥️ I have a question about your fertilizer. As I didn't get which product of this brand you are using (they seem to have a lot) and I cannot get them here in Europe: what nutrients in which amount does this fertilizer have? Does it need to be suitable for hydroculture or can you just take a standard liquid fertilizer?
I spent a couple of hours researching an alternative. His liquid fertilizer seems to be different from commonly available ones, because it contains a special form of calcium and magnesium and is buffered to a certain pH. In the EU/Uk Liquid Gold Leaf contains very similiar ingredients (also rich in Ca, Mg, S) and is a pretty hyped product. If you have the money and can find it anywhere, I recommend buying that. In germany Compo complete should be a good, cheaper alternative. When you use a liquid fertilizer generally only use half the recommended amount, otherwise salts start to build up. This can happen even more quickly in moss poles, since a lot of water evaporates from there.
@@Plantdude44 thank you so much. I thought that it might be an NK-fertilizer. I'm still very new to plant parenting and fertilizers are still a foreign area to me. So I'm not too sure about the other ingredients like magnesium and calcium. Thanks so much for looking it up ♥️
Random sizes. I have same with smaller holes some with larger and they all work just fine :) just give it a try, suppose start small and you can always make them bigger
@@sydneyplantguy Hmm, so it does smell... I could be confusing that damp woodland scent with damp and going mouldy. I'll live with it for a bit and see. I just wasn't expecting the room would smell like a forest 😄
As long as they are made from sphag moss it would be the same process. Most likely they are coco coir which won’t retain moisture so no need to water them
