We are proud to be collaborating with Waterloo Uncovered to bring you a new video series. Waterloo Uncovered is a registered UK charity that combines a world‐class archaeology project on the battlefield of Waterloo with veteran care and recovery.
In this fourth episode in the series, Phil Harding explores the potential of archaeology to help us connect with our ancestors. For Phil, a rare Paleolothic flint scatter excavated by Wessex Archaeology in Farndon Fields in Nottinghamshire provides the perfect example of how archaeological finds can provide a physical connection to the past.

Phil's enthusiasm for archeology is contagious. I could watch and listen to him for hours on end, and I've no doubt he's inspired a goodly number of youngsters to pursue careers in archeology, or at the very least, to become enthusiastic amateur archeologists. Good on you, Phil!

Very, very interesting. I'm also intrigued by the sound the flint makes, it is so musical. My mind immediately tried to envision how to make a musical instrument out of flint. I bet a skilled knapper could make pieces that are tuned. I sure would like to hear what could be done on the subject.

My all time favourite field archaeologist! I haven't seen Wessex Archaeology's channel until now. I was enthralled by Tim Team; I remember chuckling at his bickering with Mick Aston and idignance at Tony Robinson's petulant queries lol...Good to see you again Phil!

Fun fact: That millennia old technology is still in use today to produce surgical obsidian scalpel blades.

Always extremely informative Phil! I'm still very sorry that the title of an email I sent you once (2015) went through before I noticed the spelling of "napping", instead of "knapping," that must have infuriated you! What infuriates me, thinking back to a 56-acre farm field where I had been monitoring 12 sites (3 historic dating from 1793/1802/1811 and 9 prehistoric dating from 8000-11000 to about 500 years BP) is that after all the care and dedication to detail recording hundreds of artifacts over the course of 22 years, when the owner finally went to develop the land, he hired professional archaeologists who did not see there being any significance at all to the hundreds or thousands of flint chippings or flakes. They may as well just bulldozed the site because when the archaeologists were finished they had obliterated and ravaged the entire field which has now eradicated all evidence that future (more knowledgeable and more careful) generations of archaeologists could have used to further study and make more sense out of the area. When the press came to hear what the owner/developer had to say about the site, all he could say was that it was a complete waste of his money and time and that it was ridiculous that the Provincial mandate for such archaeological salvage digs should even take into consideration the locations, size, conditions etc, of the hundreds of flint chips found all over the land. He made jokes about it in the newspaper... :( I thoroughly loved the flint knapping with Phil session at Salisbury (2015) thanks again Phil.
