Fact about the Charleston Grey watermelon... I grew it and fell in love with it in my mid 20's. A few years later, while in college, I volunteered and then worked at a retirement home. I took care of "Mr Fred". He was blind and turning 100 years old. I loved him. One day I noticed an award on the wall in his room. Dr. Fred Andrus was the person who originated the Charleston Grey at the Clemson Agricultural Center in SC! I cried with pride that I was his caregiver and med tech!
Greg an d I near about the same age, but his store of knowledge is so much more vast than mine, I come to the church and listen, then I take that knowledge and apply it into my garden. I get the harvest and I praise the Lord for every single thing I harvest!Amen.💖
You all probably dont give a damn but does anyone know a trick to log back into an Instagram account? I stupidly lost the password. I would appreciate any tips you can offer me!
@Marcellus Orlando thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site thru google and im waiting for the hacking stuff now. Looks like it's gonna take quite some time so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Hey guys, I look forward to your shows every week! It was raining a bunch here in central Oklahoma at potato planting time, and I didn't get my potatoes planted...I'm an RN, and am now to busy to do anything but sleep with my down time. This year I'm gardening vicariously through you guys, keep up the good work, and the video content cranking out!
When I was a small child my Dad leased 177 acre farm and raised the large dark green "Sugar Daddy" watermelons. They are so good!!! I want to plant this year.
I just received my seed order yesterday. You guys are on it! Super fast shipping during all this here mess! :) Thanks guys! I, too, am a small business running a backyard nursery here in Central Florida selling vegetable plant starts. I have completely sold out of all my starts in just one weekend! I cannot keep up with the demand. It's craziness!
Hi good morning I was out this morning watering my garden as it’s going to be a real scorcher like in the late 80’s to early 90’s this week!!!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤ I love to garden just like hoss tools!!!!
@@gardeningwithhoss my 2 questions are can I feed my garden July through September everything But nitrogen? My sister who despises gardening told me I can’t! 2 is it way too late to plant okra? My tomatoes 🍅 love bananas! I use epsom salt whole milk powder n jobes organics tomato n veg fertilizer! Lime too! I picked me a pickle size cucumber n I seen so many BLOOMS!! So I know I’ve pollinaters!!! If you’d like pictures so you can tell me exactly what to do I’ll oblige!!!!!!
I can remember my Dad yelling "Who ate the heart out of this watermelon?" and my Mama sneakin away. She'd do it again and again. Probably the only time Mom and Dad had harsh words.
debra c haha haha! My Dad did the same with my Momma...God Rest her beautiful soul. And I do the same thing. I don’t feel bad about it either! I cut it, deseed it and put it in the fridge for everyone to enjoy and my fee is the heart is mine 😀
Greg you're my kind of fellow I'm a little north of y'all in Memphis Tennessee I wish I'd had somebody like you around me when I was growing up y'all have a good evening
I know I'm late to the show but i just found yalls channel a couple weeks ago. Great channel btw.... Anyway I used to know an old fellow down here in Louisiana that would plant potatoes & corn on February 14th come rain, shine or hurricane! Keep it coming guys
Bless your heart, Travis. You done good with that sauerkraut, and need to reach up and pat yourself on the back! So fun to see both of you enjoying it! As for preserving, you can keep sauerkraut in the fridge for about 3 months, but since you made a lot, you can waterbath can it, and it will be just fine. I make it in 3 gallon crocks and can it up! My son won't eat it (I think he's a changling sometimes!), so I can it in pints, and I still have a couple from last year. Greg, good advice on planting taters. I'll remember the next time I grow them!
I just ordered the mentioned watermelon and the Tendersweet orange for my kids. I also ordered coral bell pepper. Can't wait to try these:) Hope I am a good enough farmer!
I just ADORE the both of you. The information that you share is always provided in a way that we all (novice to experts) can understand and learn from -- and ENJOY watching! ! I also have to say that I have placed 2 small orders and your communication, customer service and delivery timing are all AMAZING even during these times, even for small orders like mine. THANK YOU for working hard and caring about all of us as more than just "customers". Saving my pennies so that I can afford a wheel hoe one day -- as a single person I just have other obligations but it's on my wish list because I'm also the only one working my little garden :-)
Hey there Greg and Travis, so good to see you both healthy. I do hope the families and all Hoss folks are healthy too. Thank you for making sure we have seeds to grow our food. Take care and God Bless.
Eating while your talking. O my. I love it, it makes me feel like I'm at your table with friends or family. Comfy in your own skin and surroundings. I'm new to you and I'm going back to number 1.
Hoss Tools will do! We are working with less space this year, so growing vertical is a matter of necessity. I’ll be using cattle panels and T-posts for the trellis. And as they grow I will use slings/hammocks tied to the trellis to support them. I’ve seen it done...doesn’t hurt to give it a shot right? I will also be doing this with our sugar pie pumpkins and small blue Hubbard squash.
@@hdflame we had a lot of trouble with things growing last year. We think it was due to the poor compost he had. The watermelon took for ever to take off and never produced. That being said... the trellis actually worked well. The vines did climb (what vines there were...😢) This will only work with small watermelon (or cantaloup and sugar baby pumpkins). Some may have to be supported by what I call a hammock (sling) as they get bigger. This can be anything from netting to actual cloth.
Great show guys. I have a suggestion for a topic for a future video. I'd like to see a show about composting. Maybe something about the different ways to do it (worm bins, hot compost, chicken manure, etc). Love the show and superior products you guys provide. Keep up the good work!
We could try, but we don't have much experience composting. We usually purchase ours. Composting is easy on a smaller scale, but it can be tough to make enough compost for our size gardens. Turning them, wetting them and making sure they get hot enough can be tricky on a larger scale.
@@gardeningwithhoss I completely understand. There's a lot to it and on a large scale, it can definitely be cumbersome. Just wanted to throw out a suggestion for content. By the way, I apologize for putting in multiple orders every few days instead of one big order. Lol. I'm sure y'all are ok with it, but being off work gives me more time to play in the garden and think of new ways to upgrade my setup.
GREAT info guys and rite on time 👍 I'm down in Louisiana and my Jubilee's are about 3" getting ready to rock & roll my crimson sweets and Congo are about 2" 💯
I made sauerkraut with your fermentation kit. At the end it had no moisture like it did a week ago, so I thought it was bad. Threw it all out. Like Travis said "lesson learned".
Sugar Baby watermellons are great in a small garden on a vertical trellise. I grow 2 plants each season in the gsrden, the flavor is wonderful. Our local farmers market has them for the season for more to enjoy. God bless.
Guys you're so right about people growing gardens. Started growing zucchini and squash plants to transplant. At what point are they to transplanted?? Based on days or height.
I love the Georgia Rattlesnake. We grew a ton of those last year. Super sweet and crisp. My grandson and I would eat em hot sitting in the middle of the garden and throw the rinds over to the pigs lol. That was fun
@@gardeningwithhoss thanks! very informative shows and so entertaining lol! I also sent my order in Sunday for my Hoss Plow and am so excited ...keep rock in and row in!
Great show. I love homemade kraut. I just store mine in the fridge or vacuum seal a few jars for the fridge. I am jealous at your seedlings. I tried to get an early start with our false spring, but it didnt work out that great. I am starting some new 162 trays now to supplement what came up. I was also using older seeds which gives me a lower germination rate. I just ordered some of your 48 cell trays. I do a lot of cutting propigation and they will perfect for that, along with smaller amounts of seedlings for staggering my planting. I can fit a lot of plants and cuttings in a small area with your trays. Best quality I have found. Be safe and god bless!
I just put my jar of crout in the fridge. Ive eaten it months later and it was great. But it will get softer over time. If you use table salt and not pickling salt it will grow a yeast over time in the jar.
I agree, I jar it up in wide mouth quart jars cover with juice put the lid on tight and refrigerate for months. You can also can it by heat, but you lose all the beneficial bacteria and it softens it. That way it keeps for a lo o o ong time.
You guys have to take care of you at some point too! Let that phone ring.... lol. You guys are doing a phenomenal job through all this and still manage to get videos out. Thank you 🙏. And didn’t your momma teach you to share with everybody??? Lol. It looks delicious. Great job on the sauerkraut. My first batch got nasty moldy. Have to try again. Take care.
I'm enjoying going back and watching these old shows, and I have a question; When the melons start coming on, how often should a fertilize, once a week, every other week? I'm on your spray schedule Greg with y'alls products. I also use your 20 20 20 fertilizer, so I have to ask how often to use it.
To respond to your kraut question. I have been canning it for years after fermenting it in a traditional crock. We like experimenting with fermenting it with hot peppers. It cans easily and keeps for a long time when canned.
I just received my order of sugar babies and the sangrias. I cant wait for the weather to straighten out here in northern Indiana, so I can start planting.
Yesterday I make sour kraut To answer your question on how to keep it you can put it in jars and refrigerate it or put it in a dark cool place. If you will eat it soon you can keep it in a krock for a short time in a cool place. Last fall when I made kraut I didn't have room in the refrigerator so I put it in the basement over winter. It stayed very cool. You do not have to can it but you should make sure it stays cool and dark. You can also can it but I think it loses some of its health properties. I hope this answers your question.
My great grandfather was famous for his watermelon. First his land was over a natural underground stream. Second we would go out and help him plant in April with hot caps. That was hard work. But I could never figure out why his melons tasted so much better than any other melon I've purchased. Until one day (probably 20 years after his passing) I remembered seeing him cut a small circle out of the melon and place a very small glass bottle of 7up into that melon and let it sit on the back porch for a number of hours. Good memories of a very good man!
My grandpa grew Sugar Baby and they're wonderful. 🙂 He also grew the long ones and even now the best watermelon I've ever had are the ones my grandpa grew.
I have chickens!! I grew up with them so I have wanted some again. I love them but had to put up a fence around my new gardens (2) to keep them from eating my food. Lol we always had a garden w canning drying and any way we could save the produce. Thank you for these vedios!!!
I live in South Alabama and planted bunching onions in the fall. They went to seed and I was told I should pull them up. I noticed the flowers on yours in the survival video. Did they need to be pulled or would they grow for a longer period of time? I cut the tops and saved some bulbs for my next crop.
We canned some krout and it was ok for about a year, then we started noticing that some of the jars were blowing their lids (even with the rings on). So yes you can can it but best to use it up within a year and leave the lid rings on after removing from the canner.
Glad I watched this vid because I would have tried to overcompensate for Maines shorter growing season-thinking I was compensating. I will try baby doll and its nice the season is 70 days. Our Summers are short-but sweet.
Great video guys. I normally plant back tail mountain watermelon on a trellis. What hybrid variety do you have that would compare to that one. About 12 to 14 pounds.
I live in South Florida and I’m just a hobbyist gardener. A couple questions one being is I want to plant Watermelons next summer. Can I grow them in 25 gallon growing containers. If so what would you recommend for a good potting soil. I just found you guys and a new subscriber. Thank you in advance.
While you can grow full-size melons in containers, you'll get the best results with dwarf cultivars that produce smaller fruits and shorter vines. Sugar Baby is a good small melon. hosstools.com/product/sugar-baby-watermelon/
I hill my taters and corn also that's East Tennessee talk.I going to plant the sangria watermelons this year last I planted the jubilee and noon and star both was very good, Travis try the sugar baby's they are very sweet I grew them before.
Scott Johns my main garden is 18 ×24 ft. I grow alot of veggies, I start my seeds early on a window shelf..chinese cabbage, lettuce, kale, tomatoes, cucs, winter squash, summer squash, peas, taters, sunflowers, sun chokes, a few herbs, and beets. Timing is everything, start your early veggies early so they can be transplanted as soon as your ground can be worked. Plan according to your last frost date. God bless.
You can't beat the Crimson Sweet. I had a rotten season with water melons last year , I planted the sugar baby and the moon and stars, they both got the disease and I gave up trying to treat it and pulled them out.
i love you guys. I feel like when you got to the tater discussion, it was like watchin WWF...... :) I've been a long time purchaser of your seed and equipment. Just really enjoy everything you guys are doing. I know this is 3 years old, just wanted to get some advice on the Watermelons before i head out there.
Can I follow watermelon, winter squash or cucumbers after tomatoes in a container garden? I just pulled a few tomato plants, and would like to use the same containers for spaghetti squash, cucumbers, and Sugar Baby watermelon there now.
First year gardening here in North East Indiana and I'm gonna try strawberry watermelons and tigger melons. Strawberry melons I'm gonna grow in a self wicking tub and tigger melon I'm gonna grow vertical
Travis, at least your sauerkraut was edible (lol), I remember Greg tasting his on the show !!!!! I have tried different melons as the years go by, tried Baby Bush Watermelon, Sugar Baby, Little Baby Flower, and Shiny Boy but only one Bush Melon was picked to eat. I will soon start your Crimson Sweet inside (NH weather still cold), and some of your other seeds. I will be looking back again on your watermelon growing video's for tips. Question...do you prefer seeds that are treated, untreated and or organic ?? Thanks you all for a interesting video..stay safe
Treated seeds work well, but untreated is fine as well. Organic seeds are more of a marketing ploy -- no genetic difference between an organically-grown seed and a conventionally-grown seed of the same variety.
I was researching on growing stuff before this went down so I ordered my seeds about a month ago probably at the beginning of the uptick. My seeds came right away, but now I hear all this stuff is selling out like hotcakes.
You could trellis them. Start them now. We like to transplant, but you could direct seed in a week or two once the soil warms a bit more. They are pretty pest resistant, but not sure about animals.
I'm growing sugar babies in a small garden. I have several that are a good size. There are a lot of vines. Question: Do you prune the vines to increase the size of the melon? The new melons will not have enough time in Piedmont NC.
You two are very charming & knowledgeable...can you please introduce yourselves & where you live at the start of the videos? I will subscribe & see older videos 👍 I live in NM & have a background in agriculture & getting more self sustaining at home. Thanks & God bless! Look forward to learning more.
My husband was a truck drive and once someone had a bunch of WM and gave him a dozen which he brought home. He was out a couple of weeks and he didnt have a reffer. We gave them out to all the family. No one had room in their fridges and he said anywhere. We just left ours in the kitchen on the floor for several months. They didnt spoil. My family all did the same and no one had any that spoiled. And the stores leave bins of them outdoors or on the store floor. You dont need to keep them cool till AFTER you cut into it.
We used to have chickens and have been wanting them again so I’m part of the chicken craze lol I’m building me a 20 by 12 by 6 foot high chicken run and have my coop built
The year before last I tried to grow watermelons and they didn’t get past the size of a softball! I did get cheap jubilee seeds from Walmart but that was before I found y’all channel. The vines grew well and lots of green foliage of a healthy plant. Only problem was they didn’t get past the size of a softball before getting end rot it looked like. So I just salavaged the couple that didn’t have it and they still tasted great and nice dark red color! Ordered some baby dolls recently so glad to try those out this go around! What should I do to get my melons to grow to full-size this year? I was thinking a calcium deficiency but not sure! I live in zone 9A in southeast Louisiana.
Well now, third time trying to Comment on this! You can store your kraut in a root cellar or another dark cool place - around 55 degrees. Top the crock up with some brine so the kraut will be under liquid when you put a weight on top. Put a muslin or real cheese cloth over the top of the crock to keep our insects especially fruit flies which will come after your kraut. You can also store it in a fridge with enough brine to cover the kraut. Third, you can pressure can it without affect taste and texture too much. You can make brine with 1/3 tbs pickling salt in a quart of water. I guess you could just eat it all 😋😳
I planted my triple sweetcorn last weekend and I have not got a single corn plant coming up yet how long will it take I know I’m being a little impatient but I just can’t help myself
You can it just like any thing else, my grandma and grandpa did it for years. It's great that way. They put the cabbage in the crock pot layered with salt and then tamp it down with a baseball bat until the juice came out of the cabbage. Then let it ferment for a few weeks
I live in southwest Alabama and want to grow small watermelons on a trellis. I need to know what is the best fertilizer for watermelons.? My garden is a raised bed but I have fed it in the past few years with organic matter and the soil is nice.
Actually, I'm never a troll just looking for some real information about watermelons. But in the first 20 minutes between hearing your dog whine and Howl and your phone non-stop ringing and both of you on the video saying you've neither grown these watermelons before and while you eat your sloppy food on camera for 20 minutes... I think everybody should have to wait through your 20 minutes of crap like I did to find out that you guys didn't even grow these watermelons before! I should have just reported you for a misleading title!!
I recently watched a show on growing watermelons, you mentioned growing big watermelons for the county fair. My stepfatherl grew watermelons in Gilchrist County FL when I was growing up in the 60's and 70's,some man asked him what was the biggest watermelon he'd ever seen,he said when he was a youngin his daddy grew one so big they had to haul it out of the field with a two horse wagon, dang that was a big watermelon the man said, yes it was my stepfather said ,then it rolled out of the wagon, busted and drowned both horses
My son is the manager of a gun shop and his shop is the only one open and has ammo and large inventory of guns. I teach a life skills class to young parents which of course has been cancelled but I made up little planting kits (pots, seeds and soil) for them to have a project with their children during this time at home. Will you have those sausage and bun seeds available? LOL!
Those seeds have been in very high demand since this video aired. And it looks like we will be out for the rest of 2020. I hear you can still purchase the finished product at your local butcher shop though.
