Good advice all around, but just so people aren’t getting the wrong info: The Pixma Pro 100 actually uses dye ink. The Pro 10 is the model that uses pigment ink. Your stickers are probably waterproof because the dye inks in the Pro 100 are high quality, but pigment ink has more longevity than dye ink. I have the Pro 10 and so far, my stickers are waterproof, too. The Pro 10 was just replaced by the Pixma Pro 300 if anyone is shopping for a high level pigment printer.

I was given the wrong info by the company who let me test their paper, but yes you are correct on that info. I've never had any issues with the waterproof abilities of the Pro-100 or Pro-200 as long as the vinyl is indeed "waterproof" and it's laminated afterwards - even for bumper stickers on my car. The Pro 10 is expensive compared to the 100 and 200 which is why I recommend the other models - beginning sticker hobbyists will be fine with a mid range laser printer as well. :)

The Pixma Pro 100 uses dye based inks. Unless you replaced yours with pigment based ones which I doubt since that would just ruin the printer. All the more reason to laminate them though. Thanks for the “how to sticker video” that was very helpful and straightforward!! I like that you mentioned the laminate is optional when using waterproof paper too. Lovely sticker designs as well 👌🏾✨

As others have said the pro 100 does not have pigment inks. I have tested out the pro 300 which has pigment inks and had really great results and they appear to be water resistant from the testing I have done. One thing that's very interesting is cannon has an ink tank printer called the cannon maxify that runs pigment inks. After testing that printer with weatherproof inkjet sticker paper it was very easy to smear the inks with little effort. I'm not too sure if just running pigment inks is the key to waterproof stickers. I think it may also have to do with the quality of the inks and the type of printer. One frustrating thing is the cannon photo printers that run pigment inks are very expensive. I wish the market would expand with pigment ink options as there is definitely a market for it.

Hi Kaytee, sorry I was misinformed by the company who asked me to trial their sticker paper! I made an edit in the video description with the correction.

The dye based vs pigment ink is a good thing to know! I do have a laser printer currently and have had some of the toner rub off with water on vinyl paper after about two weeks, so still gotta be careful :) I think it's that most home laser printers don't get hot enough to fuse the toner with the vinyl. Nice video!
@mooneyesart
@mooneyesart 3 года назад
That is a good point about the laser printer - something I had not thought of! Lamination would definitely help this problem. I'm not sure if a different printer setting may also help the longevity for laser printers, I try to use the paper setting called "Coated side 1" which is a bit slower than regular printing, but the toner seems to stay on.

The pixma pro 100 printer also uses dye based ink, not pigment ink as you mentioned so I don’t think that’s why your ink is bleeding. It might just be the paper quality/make up.

Some questions -I also checked the pigment ink cartridges. The page yield is very low,isn't it? Do you think I can use that kinda ink for the every casual usage? -Do you think it's better to get an color laser printer than an inkjet? My budget is around $300~400. So I guess the photo quality would be bad. But it doesn't get smudged, that's the strength. What's your recommendation? Thanks
@mooneyesart
@mooneyesart 2 года назад
Hi Jenna, I recently upgraded to the canon pixma pro 200 and the printer yield is much higher (it seems to produce better "cleaning" between uses and I get a lot of sheets out of it). It depends on how heavily you will use each colour as well of course. The new pixma pro 200 is around $799 cad but there may be sales around boxing day (though the inks are expensive I find it worth it for my business). If you are able to find the Canon LBP622 colour laser printer in stock, I recommend that one if the pixma pro is out of your budget. If you are printing stickers at a lower volume, I would say go for a cheaper HP colour inkjet or maybe a lower end canon; if you coat your stickers with the laminate I think you would be okay with that :)

Is there any benefit to using a glossy paper before adding a laminate? My thought is that it is going to end up having a glossy look anyways because of the laminate, so you might as well use a more matte one before applying the laminate, which would avoid the whole sensor issue you described. This is just what I am thinking but I would like to know your thoughts because I've never cut stickers myself but am hoping to soon. Thank you for such great info on your channel, it's bringing me closer to finally opening an etsy shop.
@mooneyesart
@mooneyesart 3 года назад
Hi Choji! For me, I find it's easier to find waterproof glossy paper (not a lot of sellers here sell waterproof matte paper). You can definitely achieve a nice sheen just using matte + laminate. I find with my pixma pro 100, the glossy paper just looks really nice which is why I use it. And congratulations on opening your shop soon :) it's a lot of fun!! ❤️

@@mooneyesart do you laminate already glossy sticker paper? I would assume it’s pointless because the paper is already glossy? Also, if I want my final sticker to be matte (using matte vinyl) would I use matte laminating sheets?
@mooneyesart
@mooneyesart 2 года назад
Hi there! I do laminate my glossy paper because not laminating them will lead to scratches and peeling (of the design) over time. So it's best to add it for longevity. 😊 And yes, definitely try the matte laminate for a non-glossy look. But if you are just printing stickers for use in journals/planners, there's not really a point to adding any laminate. I'd really only use it if you are putting your stickers on waterbottles and laptops :)

Is there a benefit to using cold laminate rather than hot
@mooneyesart
@mooneyesart 2 года назад
Personally I've noticed my paper curling a lot more when I use the hot laminate setting. You also risk your sticker adhesive possibly melting which is not good for trying to use the stickers later on. Cold press guarantees your adhesion won't get ruined :)

Hi definitely informative! Thank you for this! Also what type of printer would be best to use as far as laser printer and a pigment base printer?
@mooneyesart
@mooneyesart Год назад
Hi Carron, glad you liked the video - I find the Canon pixmas to be very solid for my business (I switched from the pixma pro 100 to the 200 last year). Laser printers, a Brother color laser printer will probably suit your needs and I find they have good quality prints as long as the settings are "high" enough output (600 - 1200 dpi, high resolution). Canon color lasers are good as well!

Awesome video! This was extremely helpful! Once you add your laminating sheet what cut setting do you use to cut the stickers? I'm assuming you make them all die cut but if not what setting do you use for die cut and kiss cut?
@mooneyesart
@mooneyesart Год назад
Thanks Ling! For the waterproof stickers, I used the Cardstock setting and I edited the material setting so it would be the maximim material thickness. I believe I also used the "More" pressure setting. Since the laminate + sticker paper is quite thick, if you are finding the sticker not cutting through all the way, try a 2x cut. Also blades wear out pretty often cutting through laminate, so I was sharpening it often by poking it into a little ball of tinfoil. To be honest I never did a lot of kiss cut stickers because I had a lot of issues with them. But I will hopefully be able to make a video for it in the future :)

Are these with the three way paper and avery laminate fade resistant? I've been looking around and the only other option for best waterproofing/uv resistant is the Oracoal clear permanent vinyl

Hi there, I found the three way cut paper to be thinner than the oracle paper, however it it still fade resistant with the Canon pixma pro 100/200 and the avery laminate. Haven't had problems for years but I cannot vouche for different printer models

I used matte tape for my glossy sticker paper and my cricut still cant read it!
@mooneyesart

I haven't encountered that issue before, I wonder if doubling up the tape may help with it? The glossiness could still be through the tape if it's a bit too transparent.

Hello, Where i can buy pigment ink for canon pro100?
@mooneyesart
@mooneyesart 3 года назад
Hi David, I bought mine online from a placed called inkpot, they are based in Quebec. If you are in the US there are a lot more choices for canon pixma pro-100 ink, I would just search "Canon Pixma Pro-100 Ink Refill kits". You can get bottles of each of the inks, plus refillable cartridges, and a chip resetter (so the printer knows when the cartridge is "full") for a decent price compared to the individual price of the canon inks. 😊

Registration mark problems? Simple! Ditch the Cricut and get a 'proper' cutter that doesn't use automatic registration. My old Silver Bullet machine has been deadly accurate at Print & Cut for years now using the laser 'red dot' to line up on the reg marks. Never wasted any materials due to bad registration.
@mooneyesart
@mooneyesart 2 года назад
The thing about Cricut is, even if their product needs a bit of fiddling, it's the cheapest sticker cutting machine out there. A lot of people are either printing stickers for a side hustle or for fun - so there's no need for an $800+ machine just to cut stickers. However for those making stickers as their main business it does make sense to find a high end cutter.
