To all the people who are unfamiliar with this particular beach wondering why all the boats are out in what appears to be a dangerous spot: The underwater geology at Teahupo'o includes an extremely steep reef, which is what makes the big waves. However, the reef includes many channels that allow water to flow back out from shore. The water above these channels stays much calmer than over the rest of the reef. It is common practice to park boats and jet skis above this channel and ride out the massive but gentle swells right next to the more intense, surfable waves. This isn't especially dangerous as long as you stay well within the channel and don't flirt with the edge of the reef like a couple of these folks did. So don't go calling everyone there an idiot, they just know more about what they are doing than you.
Taylor Cross I realize. However, during that particular day, it happened every 8 seconds. I am familiar with wave patterns. I have lived and sailed on the great lakes for my whole life.
not 8 seconds. That is not what an 8 second swell period looks like lol. The swell period on that was at least 14 seconds. I highly doubt such a big wave could be produced from an 8 second period and you can also see in the video where it isn't cut that the period is much higher than 8 seconds. Also - in cases where the period is so high, there will also be sets. So a set will roll in with wave after wave then it will go dead for up to half an hour
I have NEVER seen surfing from this angle from boats perspective. WOW The height of the water is just strange to me. In fact, it's ALL strange to me. This is an incredible video to me. I would love to see more from this angle and perspective Awsome thanks
This is arguably the heaviest/thickest wave (relative to height) in the world. Most surfing doesn't look like this because this is maybe the best wave in the world (and scariest).
@@jakelavaclaw2759 people will really hop on RU-vid and think they’re more superior to others by being a keyboardwareior behind a computer. It’s a sad reality we live in, and Jitsmapper is part of the reason why.
The two people who fell to the back of the boat are most likely covered in shit due to the driver shitting his pants when he was 1,421 feet in the air.
wcat121 No no, that wasn't the problem at all. Tampons do nothing to stabilize boats. Believe me, I've tried. Put 'em on outriggers (too small and absorbent), used 'em as ballast (too light), nothing worked.
ph0kused Nah, I'm more of a dog-person. Had a pussy once - well, it was actually my daughter's, but guess who got to change the litterbox and feed him - but he stank and had fleas, so I wasn't too sad when he ran off. Hmmm…I just realized that description almost fit my son-in-law as well. But back to the subject, that pussy loved to fight and fathered several litters, so he did all right for himself, I guess.
At 0:53 , when the green boat jumps on the wave, she falls back and breaks three vertebrae in the lumbar region. but thank God this accident did not affect her bone marrow and she fully recovered. And thanks to photographers so courageous as she we have impressive images of these scare waves...
Malcolm Green Lol......Martin Pozzi is the kind of boater that cost us TAX PAYERS the services of the U.S. Coastguard to save their ignorant irresponsible asses at sea.
I was on the green boat. was definitely not a cool experience. the girl on the front of our boat broke her back and was in a Tahitian hospital for a few weeks. the boat driver was inexperienced and put us in harms way. anyone who goes out to Teahupoo on a boat should be fine as long as they pay the extra money to get a driver who is experienced and knows how to position the boat in the channel where it is safer.
+Cave Johnson yes of course - every month Judge Judy visits Tahiti with compensation cash for injured Americans, and King Neptune writes them a letter of apology and reassures them it definitely wasn't poor judgement boating there
robert isambert I'm sorry to hear that. As someone who broke their back themselves in an accident, no body wants to go through that. I wish her a speedy recovery
Watch BBC’s recent discovering underwater lake video. Although the ocean is scary it’s pretty amazing. This is why I’ve come to accept the fact that I’m gonna have to play Subnautica.
@@TonyMontana-hb6uj The sea is still actually pretty terrifying if you really think about it, no need to make fun of people that are frightened with ease
those guys in the boats are carrying the big money photographers to catch the action close from a deep water channel. The boatman are very experienced and are alert and always holding position and are looking out and are ready for the rogue wave that swings wide. Normally the wave does not break where they are clustered in that deep water channel. The waves only break on the reef close by
Aww...poor girl does NOT look like she was having fun. (looks like a solid challenge navigating those waves - then add all the other boats and swimmers in the water!? no thank you)
@cherry bomb ? (I"m not smiling now, or when I commented. I wasn't being sarcastic. that's a horrible shame if she broke her back. hope she's had some recovery*)
The people in the boats shown in this video seem to know the ground under the sea they ride on and they know where the rolling prat of the wave stops, and that is where they stay. But still they are asking for it as the position they chose to stay is rather marginal and a high oncoming wave will lift the bows up suddenly with the results shown in this video. In a case like this one should slow down as much as possible and not attack the wave at any speed as that is detrimental to the situation. Best think to do is not to engage such situations.
Just before the wave the guy sitting in the middle of the boat has a camera strapped around his neck. Then after the wave the guy does not have that camera around his neck anymore.
+Jose Stickman It is perfectly normal not to wearing life jackets. I've been in many boats without wearing one, however it is the captains call as to whether or not you put one on. That call usually comes in rough seas like this. That is the least of their problems. What we have here is an unregulated clusterfuck. You have too many boats in too small an area with surfers and jet skies flying around in total chaos. Someone is going to get hurt. The boats and the surfers shouldn't be anywhere near each other. And the boats themselves need a lot more distance from each other.
***** Ok let me dumb that down for you. You certainly have the right to put on a life jacket any time you want. But if the captain say you must put one on then it is an order and you must wear one.
Boats with props, Sea Doos running all over the place, and surfers paddling around, and big honking waves crashing down. Good GOD I haven't seen this big of a fuster cluck since watching video of an six way street intersection in India.
I remember last summer i was on an island called Nantucket. There was a hurricane there and after it was over the waves were huge. The average wave hight there is 2 or 3 feet they were like 10 or 15!
The Great Gazoo LOL I never saw your comment until now. How about he was the first outsider to conquer the giant? I think he did ride it out on the first attempt. That's pretty impressive.
Brando Phoenix You're right dude...I forgot I even made this comment. No disrespect intended your way. But...he is a glory hound...not sure about the ball licking. :-D
I don’t see any accidents here, but that was a close call. I was there a different day in the red boat. They know what they are doing, but do push it a little too close at times. It’s usually the passengers that ask to get in a little closer for better shots. I asked our driver to get in closer because if you are too forward or to the outside, you can’t see the surfers in the pipe. I appreciated my driver’s caution and explaining what could happen if we got too close to the reef.
Great day surfing until you smacked on the scone by the bow of a boat, ran over by a JetSki, chopped up with a propeller, pumbled like a rag doll in the surf and then dragged out to sea over a reef. Narley dude 🤙
This whole thing looks like a disaster. I freak out when I'm near people in 5 foot water at the beach when a wave comes in. But boats and people right next to each other? Crazy.
They are actually in a channel, next to where the waves break. It is usually safe to be in the channel. But maybe a bigger set of waves came in, or maybe they didn't notice they had drifted towards the break, and obviously the boat drivers weren't paying attention to that.
Boat Skipper: 'Was that close enough for you?' Photographer: 'Yeah great - now can we go in as I just lost overboard a $30K Camera Body and its $50K Telephoto lens - thanks......'
That green boat came sooo close to flipping, the guy riding the bow may of just saved them, I did that once, the boat was on its way over and just that little bit did the trick.
PEOPLE. Stop with the bullshit, that's Teahupoo's channel, there's a reason why this is considered to be one the world's most perfect waves: the shallow coral reef below guarantees that EVERY WAVE breaks at the same place with nearly the same shape, and that they ALWAYS end at the channel, which is where those boats were. If there was no channel in Teahupoo it'd be an unsurfable venue, there's no water in front of the wave to "duck dive" and reach the lineup. Channel = no waves breaking.
Lol, not even keeping to the Coast Guard regs on boat spacing, no Pfd’s, probably drunk, but at least they have a really cool Monster Energy decal on their boat when they sink
