Thank you for these recent videos on the stock synth in Waveform. I was always very dismissive of it because it's so basic (compared to Surge). But it's actually fun to experiment with and learn about making my own patches
Thanks, I’m glad you’re getting some inspiration from them. It’s fun to put limits on ourselves sometimes to see where it takes us. I used 4OSC a few times lately for Waveform Free videos and I was so impressed by some of the presets that I had to see what sounds I could get from it myself from scratch. Surge is amazing too and many of the same concepts apply when working with a complex synth like that one.
Thanks for your work on daws. I have been using a roland keyboard recently and it comes with Abelton lite which as you said is mostly for windows or mac. I have been trying waveform free but I tried to load some VST plug ins and it kept crashing so need to maybe work on why. Things like steps and arpeggiator only on paid versions unless you feel you can make a patch on a rack to do these things? Bitwig is great but I hear you need to keep paying for updates etc. I really like the ability to import split audio on abelton - at least I think it was. Maybe I'm wrong there! Should come for a drive to chat. Using Mint BTW.
Thanks for your comment. Waveform free is still on version 11 but should soon be on 12 which has had a complete rewrite of the audio engine. It should be much more stable for most things. I’d suggest downloading the 90 day trial of Waveform 12 to see how well it works with your setup. If you want steps and arpeggiator etc then it’s worth investing in the pro version, even the lowest tier of it to begin with. I think that one’s not too expensive either. As for Ableton Lite, I’ve had some limited success getting that to work in Linux with wine but the top bar isn’t clickable so that makes most of it unusable. As for Bitwig, yes, it’s another beautiful DAW. They also have a demo for a trial period if you feel like giving it a go. You don’t need to keep paying. They’ve just structured their pricing so that you can get updates for a year after you buy it, then you can choose to either stay on the version you’re on at the end of that time or else upgrade for another year. Most other DAWs structure it that you get free updates until the next major release. I think the price therefore works out about the same, but with Bitwig you’re likely to get some very nice new updates during the course of the year. A lot of people wait on the version they’re on until they see a new feature they like. There’s no obligation to keep paying constantly. I hope I’ve answered all of your questions. Best of luck with your decision.
@@tracktionwaveformtips appreciate your reply. Ill try waveform 12 and see how it goes. Mainly need to be able to load more plugins that work or use the fantom ones.
@@rodneywood3399 I hope you enjoy it. Let us know how you get on. There are some very interesting plugins from Tracktion too that you can buy as a package deal with the DAW, or separately. The most recent one is the most feature-rich granular synth I’ve ever seen, called Novum. There’s also f.’em, Biotek 2 and Waverazor, all quite unique synths. Have a try of those too while you’re at it. Oh, Novum is just on Windows for now but I got it working with yabridge yesterday. I’m delighted about that, but hopefully we’ll get a Linux version eventually.
Hi Bren, Just playing with the 12 demo. One thing I have not found out how to do is to automate sustain on a piano or similar track. I have seen it done on logic etc but is it possible on waveform pls.
I haven’t automated the sustain specifically but the way to add automations is to click the + on the right of the track you’re automating. That should give you a list to choose from.
@@tracktionwaveformtips yes have tried that but cant see anything. I was watching this and it got me curious ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ayb8X4Lh_wk.html. Around the 2-3 minute mark. Thx again and sorry to trouble you.
Hello. What kind of ghost notes do you mean? Is there an example of it in this video or did you mean something else? And which loops are you talking about? If you mean selecting all regions then select one and then CTRL+A.
@@tracktionwaveformtips with ghost notes i meant the transparent ones that help you stay in key Hopefully that explains it, i don't blame you for not understanding me. My english isn't what it used to be 😅
@@mrbuffwoopmusic8788 oh I see, I think. You mean midi notes that are written but not heard? I’ll have to look into that. If I want things to stay in key then I usually turn on “fold to key” in the midi region (in Waveform 12). I also made a short a while ago about how to do that in W11 by placing notes before the first bar and folding to notes used.
I’ve actually been using Waveform a lot more than Bitwig recently but you’re right, there’s definitely a lot more modulators in Bitwig. I’ll do a few more Bitwig videos soon. Looking forward to it. I don’t remember which DAW you use yourself but they’re both great in their own ways.
@@tracktionwaveformtips Been with Waveform sice version 4 (Tracktion v4) but also have Mixcraft Pro and Fl Studio as well. Bitwig gets a lot of hype and was curious to see how far ahead you would say it is to waveform. I do feel v12 is good though. Seems a lot more stable.
@@stephenroldan5107 What do you like or prefer about Waveform over Bitwig? Just curious. I've yet to try Bitwig but it does look appealing. Is it stable in Linux with windows vsts?
I would like to combine them but the idea of spending 300 euros on a daw when I already have Waveform is a bit much especially given the economic situation right now. Hopefully the waveform devs will take ideas from bitwig and add live looping / clip matrix and more modulator types moving forward.
Yeah that’s what I’d have thought too but I heard some of the Tracktion guys referring to it with a hard C. I’m tempted to start pronouncing the c that way in oscillator from now on… 😂
