Andrew, marine radar waveguide antennas are actually slotted in a transverse orientation, the slots being across a single side of the narrow face of the waveguide. The slots are alternately slightly angled, and the waveguide is mounted horizontally in a radome structure to protect against corrosion. The antenna provides a tall but very narrow beamwidth essential in providing the resolution to discriminate small targets for display on the familiar PPI screen. Rotational speed of the antenna for marine radar is usually around 30rpm.

Thanks very interesting- have seen mention of slot antenna before but didnt know how they worked Antenna design seems like a HUGE field of study

Good stuff Andrew. Very interesting and informative as usual. I'm dying for the 2nd part to see it's performance. Maybe you could make it as your Subscribers' Christmas Present!! LOL

Actually, when you need an omnidirectional antenna (maybe for an amateur television repeater), 12dB of gain would be considered pretty good. But for wi-fi use, be aware that the vertical slots mean it is horizontally polarised. Most wi-fi sources will be vertical, so comparing its reception capabilities against other wi-fi antennas would not be a fair test.

I still use 70's JBeam slot tv aerials. Brilliant.

What are the dimensions of the end plug? Is this a standard extrusion? The omni versions of a 2.4 -2.7 Ghz. MMDS antennas were tubular with radial slots. The length was about 22'.

Is there an explanation about the omni antenna ? 😉

some interesting features here. The elements are abnormally long, but connected not at their bases doubtless for matching and they are not technically 'slot' but conventional, a combination of slot re the rest of the aerial and conventional re the elements.

Andrew, have you ever done anything with a loop antenna for wifi? The simplicity alone with a refector seems like it might be a fun project for your viewers to reproduce.

No never but your not the first to ask

@@andrewmcneil, obviously the range wouldn't be sexy like some of the other stuff you've made. But it might be good for single point stuff that's just out of reach like a coffee shop from a car. Anyone can bend wire into a circle and expand their skills from there. The confidence that comes from a single simple working project can mean a lot for people.

is the gain comparable with a your toilet brush holder?
@andrewmcneil
@andrewmcneil 3 года назад
Yes but the difference is a cantenna points all of it's gain in one direction.
@freefilms10000
@freefilms10000 3 года назад
@@andrewmcneil actually, and very surprisingly, the cantennas I have made are remarkably undirectional, even work quite well pointing upwards!

Hey Andrew. I'm just curious. I tried searching but I cant find what I am searching for. I just want to know if do cell towers support 5ghz wifi.?? When I am searching, it always says that the network I'm using is Launching 5g. I know that 5g cellular is different from 5ghz wifi. So I am very confused. Thanks Andrew.

5G and 5GHz are two very different things. I know some towers in cites do support open wifi but only at 2.4GHz due to the fact it can propagate much further than 5GHz. 5G is made up of many different frequencies ranging from 800MHz to 4GHz here in the UK.
