The Waves emulation of the 80s legend, the BSS DPR-402, is not often talked about. It's actually a bit of an enigma. In this video, I demonstrate why I love using it on drum busses, and in the process, I fall in love with it again as a vocal de-esser.

Late to the party on this one. I make electro and so glad I discovered this, it so has much bounce and pop for the drums it's unreal. I don't think this will ever leave my drum bus. I use a lot of arps with short sustain times, and this works great on those too. What I'm saying is, I use it on everything.

Awesome, yes I agree, I love it. Definitely a less glamourous plugin that doesn't get as much love as it should. Thanks for watching.

I was just watching a video of a guy showing his radio studio and he shows the hardware unit in use. Good to see you doing a video on the software version

TO be honest, I am not a huge Waves fan but they nailed this great compressor. A friend of mine tipped me this compressor and it is so good on drums. My go to compressor for drums. Thank you for the nice demonstration!

You’re welcome dude and thank you for watching. Yes it’s amazing on drums. I think a lot of people are constantly falling in the trap of buying new plugins when there are already some great plugins available, even some of the older ones.

I used to own the hardware machine in my studio, back in the days around 2003-2005 when I did my music education on the Rockacademy (NL). Awesome machine, very powerful and with a solid character. Nice to know that there's a Plugin version nowadays too!

Got mine today after years of searching for one in good conditions and at a reasonable price. It's a true swiss-army tool i am glad to leave the plugin for the hardware. Thanks for the informative video. Peace!

I'm so glad I found you! I have an original 19inch rack unit from the last century, I made three albums with it... and now, as I hit my 60th year I'm about to get musically creative again (my day job is making videos for schools). I've always struggled to understand the best way to use compressors, but I'm really trying to get my head round this now ( never too late to learn, huh?) I'm going to use your vocal settings as my start point (thank you!) and start experimenting on backing vocals initially. I'll be using an Aston Spirit into a TL Audio Valve Classic pre-amp (hardware, of course) into my Soundcraft Ghost desk - with all the set EQ at neutral on this. I have a lovely old analogue studio here on the Kent coast, using (still!!) an Atari 1040 running C-Lab. When I tell the plug-in-kids at the schools I work with about this their faces go completely blank... 🙃- Richard

That sounds amazing dude. I do miss my analog gear to be honest, but alas, I sold all of mine many years ago. Enjoy making music brother and thank you for watching.

Full marks - One of my GoTo comps. Permanently on my desktop audio, sitting in Cantabile as a VST host inserted into Voicemeeter. I never owned the hardware 402 but I do have a BSS 31-band Graphic. 👍

Thanks for watching buddy. Yes I love it. I really don’t understand why the plugin doesn’t get any respect or hardly anyone talks about it. It’s a decent emulation of an amazing piece of hardware. I’ve never used the BSS EQ though. Is it good?

@@TheCratesMotel IIRC there was a connection between BSS and DDA. I think some studio people looked on BSS as FOH gear more than Recording. Their Graphics ? I loved mine. It's languishing in a lock-up atmo, in my FOH rack as it happens, but that's just circumstance...

Awesome. Plugin companies want us to believe that you have to keep buying new plugins to stay current. It’s not true. Thanks for watching.

I still have the hardware it's on my mixbus on faster release and slow attack it has a grate dynamic aggression. I'm not sure but it's like a SSL bus plus, I use the dpr with my Tc Electronic Finalizer. 1.5 ratio is much better on mixbus. It will make sense to have the plugin version also, thank you. In old times (1989😂) this equipment was the one hardware in the studio and mainly it used on main vocal for the de-ess and it was the one and only loved de-ess for me all times. Thank you and cheers.

And this plugin is amazing on my drums. Loving the transparency, and punch its adding. Definitely my new drum bus compressor 😁. Thanks again my guy 🙏🏼

Do you suggest to use it in master ? Any specs ?
@TheCratesMotel
@TheCratesMotel 2 года назад
Hey thank you for watching. I wouldn't use it in mastering personally because it has quite a lot of sound to it, as in, it imprints a character. Of course, if this is what you are looking for, then it would be ok in mastering. I prefer to keep my compression quite transparent in mastering.
