I have the native SSL Channel Strip, and I definitely think it sounds smooth..similar to an Avalon preamp... but it lacks the clarity and punch that the plugin alliance channel strip has! That J series sounds phenomenal. I think I might purchase it. There’s a great amount of depth, clarity, punch, and weight to it. Thank you for this video! Very helpful to hear those comparisons. I appreciate it.

Plugin Alliance has been one of my go to's outside of uad. The mix knobs definitely was a seller.. the true test is with the compressor... lower the threshold all the way with a 1:1 ratio with the fastest attack and release, then slowly raise the ratio then listen to how truly different the compressors are on these plugins

I Like The SSL Native Best though the Plugin Alliance is nice as well.

This is great advice. I personally use SSL channel compressors the exact same way.

Indeed Plugin Alliance is the best. Yes it is a plugin not the real hardware, but maybe the best plugin with the Waves 4K bundle (which is my preferred plugin)... But the "SSL360" version with usb stupid hardware,... and with sadness I say this. It is just regarding the SSL gears in the 80's (now, this is a simple usb controller with faders and softs like the others)... It is not relevant and aligned with my favroite mark. In this case, buy a Warm stereo limiter, it is better ... Super copy of the Glue 4000 limiter but hardware ! Better than all plugins...

Wow, I very big on SSL plugs-in, I have all 3 of them, and very happy with them, with that being said I think it mostly depends on how you use these plugs in; For instance, only use Native plugs-in on a mix or just Waves, then Plugin Alliance a then listen to the end result. I think you're are right with this vocal song, Plugin Alliance had some good presents. Another Great Topic...

Plugin alliance is the best. Really, the only one I think. And I do not work for them.

But for the price... Waves is better and sounds like the same.

I have the Waves and Plugin Alliance SSL plugins and between these two I prefer Plugin Alliance (PA). Using different TMT channels on each track is subtle (barely noticeable in isolation) but when the tracks sum to the Mix Bus it does make a noticeable (and pleasant) difference. I don't mean my preference as a knock on Waves. I'm not in the camp of haters who bash their products, but SSL G Channel is not one of their better ones. I couldn't quite get a feel for the SSL Native so I don't have an opinion. I also slightly prefer the PA 4000 E over the 4000 G. However, I've found for modern/contemporary music the PA SSL 9000 J is a better option. If you are beginning to develop a preference for the PA version of "G" over Waves and Native, you might also find the other two PA SSL offerings are a bit better than their 4000 G. The best SSL emulation I have in my collection is Sand by Acustica Audio. While I find the sonic quality of Sand superior, it's a fairly memory intensive plugin. As a result the PA 4000 E and 9000 J get a lot more use when I'm working on a song with a high track count. It all comes down to our own individual tastes and the specific need in the context of the song, but since I frequently use SSL console emulations I thought I'd share my opinion.

Nice feedback, when I can get the 4000 J for $29 I'll grab it and see what it's about.

@@TheAudioCzar I hear you. Rule #1 of buying Plugin Alliance stuff: be patient and wait for the right deal. They are very good about rewarding customers as they reach different purchase tiers. It's a bit more difficult to buy their newer plugins at a steep discount but it can be done. I was fortunate enough to pick up 4000 J for $25 but that was a result of 3 separate discounts that I was able to combine. PA did a $199.99 flash sale, I got $100 more off for product family discounts (when you've previously purchased a product in that family), and used my $75 monthly coupon. They actually started a sale today, 3 consecutive days of "Buy any plugin for $29.99". It of course excludes their 11 newest plugins including 4000 J. Still, with their diversified product portfolio it shouldn't be to hard to find something useful. The first voucher code is: LYS1-2999 and expires 2/27 at 11:59 PM PST.

I'm a longtime devotee of the UAD 4k channel strip, and I've used it for over a decade now, even to the point of refusing to get their "updated" version. About 6 years ago, I got the Waves 4k as a low-latency alternative, and I have found that it is nowhere near as good as the UAD. But lately, given the advancement of native processor, low latency plugs, and the fact that I have been impressed with the PiA versions of several other UAD plugs that I have used for a long time, I have seriously been considering getting the PiA 4k. I have several other channel strip plugs....the PiA Focusrite console, the Scheps OmniChannel, the Waves 1073, but I really haven't bothered with them much. However, if I could get a zero-latency version of the 4k that sounds as good as the UAD? That's something I'm down for....

The waves would cut nicely through a busy mix. PA good option overall. The SSL Native needs a saturator after it. Give it some life.

I loved the brainworxs the most. It felt smother on top with a bit more warm mid punch. I could really "feel" the analog emulation. The waves sounded almost too harsh and brittle. Almost. Just a wee bit My instinct was to turn her down. The SSL sounded very very smooth, but with less mid punch. I could live with both of those two easily. Subtle differences, but noticable, and it's all about how you want your vocals served

For me it is plugins. The real 4K SSL consoles E or G are really better. I worked on it and I am conviced about. Plugins are almost the same and for the price, ... In this case, the "Waves SSL channel" is the best in regard of the price and quality.

Im gona be honest....after seeing a shootout on here with channels vs hardware.....the G Channel.....with PA/Brainworx...is the closest to the hardware sound.........the only mistake they are making on all these strips.....they need to make the compressor on all of them...more sensitive to be able to master of maybe 2 strips.....then use different tolarant channels.....you could ad some saturation some stereo space...you'd have about 90% on an $80,000 G SSL Console........
