With all the excitement about the Korg Wavestate, I thought I should really do a new clip and try and show a little more than just the wave sequencing on this old beast.
Hope you enjoy!

I listened to some 25 Wave*state* demos, and I can‘t help: the Wave*station* sounds better to my ears! I love its ‘digital rawness’ which is missing on the Wavestate. Let alone the ridiculously small keyboard of the the Wavestate. :/

Hey mate, could I possibly garner some advice? I'm a synth novice, but loving all the '80s sounds that I grew up with, am in the market for a serious keyboard. It's a long-term ambition really, that I've only recently been able to afford taking seriously. I'm prepared to put in the spadework of learning programming, but don't know what to go for. It's basically between this, the Korg M1 and the Roland D-50. Very tempted to go for the D-50, but formed the impression it's hard to programme? Any advice you could offer would be gratefully received.
@100ThingsIDo
@100ThingsIDo 3 года назад
I find the Korgs are a little easier to program than the D50 if you are using the fron panel. Both are pretty much the same when using an editor. The D50 is potentially more flexable if you like the sounds it comes with as you can do a quasi-analog subtractive style synthesis with it. Espen Kraft did a good video on this around 1.5 years ago! :D

#100ThingsIDo, very nice video on one of my all-time favorite synths; I was fortunate enough to get an EX in great overall condition about a year ago for under $500 (including its original box from ~1991 - even the box was in decent condition, considering). Talk about a deal. Anyway, I was fool enough to part with one back in the day, so I’m glad to have been able to undue that “crime.” Somewhere in the comments here you indicated that the one you’re playing had been in bad shape and needed work. In my case, it has the original display and it’s the only area which needs to be updated with a modern display (currently it’s quite dim but still somewhat legible). As I understand it, the replacement display itself isn’t too costly as a part, but the necessary “surgery” to swap it out (and while under the hood, put in a fresh battery for good measure) requires some time, patience, and a bit of expertise with a soldering iron and requisite electronics knowledge; the latter are not my strong suit. Any advice on this score?
@100ThingsIDo
@100ThingsIDo 4 года назад
The easy way would be just to replace the backlight on the display. That way you could continue to use the current display with minimal soldering (only 2 wires). Other than that if you look on line there are a few instructions on how to DIY the modification. Its easy enough if you follow the instructions BUT take HEAPS of pictures of everything you unscrew and remove. The Wavestation has a tone of screws and small connectors that are very easy to forget which ones go where :D Good luck!

Michael, A very nice demo of a very underestimated synth. I've had mine ever since I saw Dave Smith demo one at an audio trade show in Tokyo. The Wavestate is a nice development but I fear it will become the "one finger" synth of choice. The original WS is very playable as demonstrated beautifully by yourself in this video.

Hey Jonathan, thanks for the kind comments and nice to see you here :D. One of the things I always hope to do with 100thingsido is encourage people to make their own sounds and explore their synths and samplers. Yep, I still love the Wavestation and it still sounds good and not dated at all if you get away from the classic sound sets :D

I found it easy to bond with the Wavestation. Compared with some modern synths, programming is a breeze. However, there are some drawbacks which I'm sure the Wavestate addresses.

In my curiously driven opinion I think it would be cool idea to see what would happen to you marry a Wavestate, "module" lets' say in the future, with a Wavestation EX for additional creative/layered interplay. It's a thought.

This synth gets far less love and attention than it deserves (damn you, user interface!). Some may compare aspects of its technical specs to the PPG, but the WS, particularly given the choice of patches here, exudes more the air of an early-90s successor to the Prophet VS (complete with the distinctly dark aural smoothness characterizing much of Sequential's '80s output, which I can only assume stems from Dave Smith's involvement), and it (mostly, as I probably indicated earlier) doesn't disappoint.
@100ThingsIDo
@100ThingsIDo 4 года назад
Yep, the UI is a little less than stellar but everything in this clip was done very close to real time. Once you get to the area you need to edit (and have set up the envelopes) its pretty reasonable. For sure its from a time where synths were not designed for the faint of heart! :D It for sure has some Sequential magic in it, I believe it was 4 of the original team working on this synth! :D

Based on the specs I've seen it seems the wavestation EX and A/D have 2x47 or 55 effects versus only 16 simultaneous on the new wavestate. Also, the original wavestations seem to have greater multi-timbrality with 32 simultaneous voices versus only 4 on the new wavestate. Or am I misinterpreting the specs?
@100ThingsIDo
@100ThingsIDo 4 года назад
I believe Nick Batt from Sonic State has one at the moment so we should know for sure what it can and can't do very soon! :D
@sashas3362
@sashas3362 4 года назад
@@100ThingsIDo I believe he's already done a vid about the wavestate. I believe I know what the wavestate's specs are. I'm not sure I understabd the specs on the wavestation. The wikipedia page on the wavestation says it has 2x47 or 55 effects. But I've read elsewhere that it's only capable of 2 simultaneous effects whereas the wavestate is claimed to handle 16 simultaneous effects. As far as multi-timbrality goes the wavestation apparently loses substantial polyphony with some of the "performance" patches and loses even more polyphony with the "multi-set" patches (some multi-sets polyphony apparently being reduced to 1 simultaneous note). If I remember correctly the wavestate is advertised as offering the maximum polyphony on all patches so you never sacrifice polyphony in exchange for increased complexity of the sound.
@sashas3362
@sashas3362 4 года назад
@@100ThingsIDo Wait. That wasn't nick batt who did the video about the wavestate for sonic state. It was somebody else. So it seems we will need to wait for nick's input.
@100ThingsIDo
@100ThingsIDo 4 года назад
@@sashas3362 From memory you can only do 2 simultaneous effects, the claim of 47 or 55 effects is a little over played in my opinion. I mostly used outboard or VST on it than do it in the machine. Patches are a little tedious to make the more complex you make them although they can sound amazing for something from the early 90's :D
@sashas3362
@sashas3362 4 года назад
@@100ThingsIDo Yeah, 2 simultaneous effects sounds right. I used the wavestation a lot back in the 90's although I can't remember all the specs these days. Been too long. But the M1 could only do 2 simultaneous effects. The wavestation came out shortly after the M1 if I remember correctly. So 2 sounds right.
