I know there's lots of chiptune and FM trackers around these days, but isn't that… just a tracker, but with a nice UI? Like they trace back to the Amiga?

@@D0Samp Most trackers don't have a built-in software-based full-on wavetable synthesiser like this, and the ones that do, are emulating a specific soundchip, whereas this one isn't.

@@traumatizedgeworth furnace has so much little annoyances, mainly when navigating and editing patterns. That's not to mention bugs, related to the import of the samples. All of this combined drives me insane when using furnace.

It uses Windows' Audio API plus Windows Forms for the dialog when renaming things, unfortunately. That said, (I haven't tested this myself) a few of my friends have been able to get it running in WINE with no issues.

​@@DogeChargerplease try to port it to Mac. Although, It seems to me it is going to be a hard fork, since the OG project is relying a lot on windows specific api's and tooling. A osx branch is going to be hard to maintain and keep in sync. But if you feel the calling to do so, I'll be a happy user of your work.

Yes, although I would use the term 'emulate' in a very loose sense. WaveTracker does not emulate any hardware chip. It uses its own internal audio engine. You could absolutely draw 12.5% 25% 50% and 75% pulse waves, a triangle wave with 16 steps, and import noise samples and use them to get something that sounds like an NES. Just beware that it won't be hardware accurate to the 2A03, if hardware accuracy is something that's important to you.

This is based on Soundtracker which was the first music tracking software ever written, for Amiga computers. While it’s true the the original Amigas were limited by 8-bit mid generational models and third-party cards did have 16-bit resolution. Gameboys of the late 90s by contrast were far more simplistic and instead had prewritten wavetables (instruments) that cartridges could use- all games use the same instruments. And of course it had to work that way. It doesn’t do any PCM playback mostly because there was no room on the cartridges (2MB?) to fit any audio samples; audio compression was not nearly as advanced as it is today. So, when you say “software 8-bit is inauthentic” maybe what you mean to express is that you have a particular fondness for the simplistic wavetables of the GB(‘s PSG).

naudio sucks at supporting anything other than windows so a linux port would take a while maybe if you're lucky then wine will work
