Waxing for Speed

Waxing your kayak will save you paddling time and energy. All kayak surfaces have micro porosity that you can easily fill with wax as seen in the video. Ocean Kayak has a very smooth, slick hull that becomes like glass when waxed. Try it and you will feel the difference.

I want to see the evidence! Look, back in the day when I was dinghy sailing, doing state and national titles, we all used to wax the dinghies, but it never seemed to make any difference, in fact, as I grew older it seemed slower to me. Now I have talked to a lot of top competitors in recent years and they tell me that fluid dynamics testing shows that waxing a boat makes it slower. So, on what evidence do you make this claim?

The seeming slower may be due to a false impression based on the amount of turbulence produced. I personally find myself gauging speed by my bow wave, but if wax changes the turbulence within that bow wave, it may feel like you're going slower when the opposite may actually be true.

@@Andy-df5fjWith campaigning many race series. I consistently find slightly worse placements in races when the boat has been freshly waxed. However, the differences are very small and there are many influencing factors. So its hard to pin it down to one cause. Back in the 70s, waxing was popular but last time I campaigned in sailing (2000s), no one was waxing boats anymore. Then I find reports that fluid dynamics tests buy real world engineers agree with my personal observations. T

@@kenwebster5053 Fair enough. That is a more accurate assessment than observing the waves. I sometimes wonder what would happen if you coated a hull in hydrophobic spray which completely repels water from sticking to stuff.

@@Andy-df5fj I am told that water molecules in contact with the hull align randomly so the surface tension disappears regardless of the the surface being hydrophobic or not. I do not know if that is true though. Could google it and see if you can find an engineering or academic study. There are chemicals that do reduce skin friction with water but i don't recall the class name of these as they are banned, I have no interest in them. There are so many opinions and counter opinions, it's hard to know what's true.

@@kenwebster5053 Unfortunately the abundance of countering opinions is true with so many things. Sometimes you just gotta go with your gut or test for yourself if you have the time and resources.

Thanks for this information. I have always used the "traditional" aluminum canoe. tried a borrowed "kayak" recently and the hull had a TEXTURED finish from the factory. On top of that it was scratched up and frayed. I had some doubts that it should have been that way, I could feel the drag right away and 2 miles on the river plum wore me out. I thought to myself that this couldn't possibly be normal for a kayak. thank you for confirming that!

yes its normal for a kayak, yes the drag from hull scratches is noticable, you use plastic polisher, and uv protectant to remove them and maintain your kayak, never wax a poly boat as it just falls off. this technique is exclusively for composite/fiberglass boats.

Thank u for advice sir. Forgive me I am not a troll. I'm up in Canada with all the tree huggers..... nothing against that either I'm kinda one myself. Any environmental concerns to be had with this? Without even looking up the ingredients I'm under impression that this is better than wd 40. A wise man once taught me mink oil on your work boots and they last a lot longer if you keep it up. It would require more applications especially on the bottom but mink oil would do the same thing and be way better for environment? No?

Epic Kayak write-up by Olympic paddler Greg Barton that addresses this issue -- his take is not to wax, but not a big deal either way.
