Went here yesterday , a first for us . There was around 60 that grouped together in the morning top of that beech tree .Poor weather and light but still great to see them . Unfortunately the sparrowhawk chased them all off , they was only visiting for a few seconds after every 1-2 hours so I only managed a few poor shots . The owl was there so was a nice bonus . Admire you for sticking it out in a residential area Dan,, hope you didn't have too much agro from the locals - love Waxwings but have to admit have had one or two uncomfortably encounters with "Joe public" who dont share our love of these beautiful birds so have a tendency to shy away from photographing in public place's. Lovely images from the day though Dan. 👍

Thanks very much Glenn. A really mixed bag from the local people. I have to say most were really helpful and polite and in turn the photographers in the main were respectful. I can fully understand how the people who live in the area can get frustrated, especially when inconsiderate people block driveways etc. Common courtesy and mutual respect is what’s called for. There will always be those who unfortunately let both sides down. All the best mate 👍🏻

Another great video Dan. That image of the Tawny owl is just superb. I remember when i first photographed Waxwings 13 years ago. I had notifications from Rare bird alert and spent a day chasing round Ripley, then Belper and eventually Ashbourne with no success. So, dejectedly, decided to head home. Came off the A52 a mile from my home and the next street turning - there were about 30 of them in the Rowan trees, troughing all the berries right in front of me. They are absolutely stunning birds. Sadly not seen any since, but who knows, i am keeping tabs open.

Being a Sheffield guy myself, I know Crosspool well. I have only seen waxbills twice. One winter when i was a kid in the late 1970s a small flock took up residence in he nearby woods. they fed on the berries of the hedge of my junior school (Lound Junior School0. the hedge was on a road called Mafeking Place (S35). The school field also had competing flocks of redwings and fieldfares which I used to watch with my dad's binoculars from my bdroom window which overlooked the school field. The other about 10 years later, was at Gibraltar Point, Lincs, again feeding on berries in the plantations away from the salt marshes. Nice to see them again.

Dan, fantastic photos and videos of the waxwings, especially the one with the berry in its mouth while flying! The tawny owl was quite awesome too! We get cedar waxwings regularly in my area but not usually Bohemian. Last winter I was at a refuge in northeastern Massachusetts driving out and saw an experienced birder parked on the road next to a berry tree. Lo and behold, a Bohemian Waxwing eating berries a dozen feet away at eye level! They are quite something to behold.

Hi, Dan loved those Waxwings they are so exotic looking , lm a bit confused if you over exposed against the sky would that not blow everything out? Thanks
@danwillis_photography
@danwillis_photography 9 месяцев назад
Thanks very much Neil. The exposure will depend on how you are metering for light in your image. I was using matrix metering (possibly called evaluative metering on canon) which meters from the whole image. The subject is darker than the background and so becomes underexposed. By increasing exposure compensation when shooting in manual with auto ISO, the bird will be correctly exposed but the background will be overexposed. It’s then a case of correcting the sky in post edit. Hope that makes some sense 👍🏻

Great stuff Dan, superb images as always! Ps I know you're a grown up but please beware when stood at the roads edge with your camera and tripod, you must keep an eye on approaching motorists as many are driving while using their mobile phones even texting, it's very dangerous out there! Just this week I was almost wiped out by a van coming at me on my side of the road, the driver so obviously looking down at his phone, he noticed at the last minute he was on the wrong side of the road, luckily myself and the driver behind me all braked to avoid a collision, the idiot using his phone swerved so hard he virtually lost control, the road was a sixty mph limit so it could have been a catastrophe for myself and many others!
