Waykar PD160B Dehumidifier | The Best Modern Dehumidifier?

The unboxing and initial checkout of the Waykar PD160B 34-Pint dehumidifier. Hardly anything is made the way it used to be, but for whatever reason, dehumidifiers in particular seem to be the absolute cheapest, most unreliable appliances made today. They so often leak the refrigerant, are loud, perform poorly, or even post an electrical hazard. They almost all use very high pressure refrigerants like R410 or R32.
This model, and this is the only one I know of that still does, utilizes the older, low-pressure refrigerant 134a with a conventional reciprocating compressor. It operates at an exceptionally low volume, runs very smooth and seems to draw a reasonable amount of moisture from the air. It does have electronic controls which is not my preference, but they are at least relatively easy to use.
The only major gripes I can see immediately would be the small bucket capacity and bright backlight on the controls. Of course it's still far too early to tell how long it will last, but it certainly seems to have a lot of potential.

I literally just purchased this from Amazon 5 min ago. I have a converted (closed-in) back porch that's been built into two small bedroom sized rooms. This unit is going in one of them, which is a designated music room (guitars, amps, etc...) The room has a ductless split system air-conditioner, and the RH typically sits about 10% above the optimal level for instruments even with the AC unit on. Seeing that I only have to lower the RH 10% to balance it out, I don't think I'll have to run it too hard to acomplish that. So I'm hoping it'll have a relatively good lifespan. I'm eager to see how loud it is. It took me a couple of hours to decide which one to get. I compared all the nuances and read the same reviews as you. I I just hope I made the right choice.

This is certainly the quietest unit available today, but expect to run it continuously. It's not very powerful, and the humidity settings don't regulate the machine's operation very well due to poor design (humidity sensor is placed too close to the coil, as soon as it satisfies and turns off the fan, residual moisture still on the coil will trigger the unit to come back on). This design flaw seems to exist in the majority of units sold today.

@JordanU I noticed the sensor location in the video where you took it apart. It's kind of hard to avoid that in 95% of units like this. RH in the room currently sits at 60%, and I'd like to get it to settle around 45% with this. How would I do that if it were running continuously? Would it not go under my desired RH? I suppose with my two hydrometers, I can run it continuously and turn it off when it reaches my desired level, but I'd be concerned about the rate at which the RH spikes back up. Thankfully, 60% RH is only at the extreme end of optimal for my needs. It's not necessarily "too much," but it's recommended to have it around 45-50% if possible. I appreciate your feedback. I may be second-guessing this purchase a bit now and thinking I should have spent more. After all, you get what you pay for, but again, this is a design flaw that exists in most modern units that are around this size. Can't we just get completely functional dehumidifiers? Its basic refrigerator tech, not rocket science. Lol

@@BostonWhoFan515 It's unlikely this is going to bring the humidity much below 45, it's not that powerful. Even the better quality vintage units seldom pull it down much past 40.

@JordanU its set at 45% and working like a charm. What a lifesaver. I wish I could find a way to use the hose. Dumping manually kinda sucks. It's only about once a day, though... you just never know when. Otherwise this is fantastic for the bedroom size music room it's used in. My dog even perfers the room to all others in the house.

I had a very pretty LG 70 pint which removed about a 2 gallons per day and used a lot of power to do it. I bought this 150 pint Waykar and it removes three times the amount of water in the same amount of time. It's not pretty and the bucket is awkward to empty but it performs much better and it uses less power. I don't even need to run it all day either because it gets down to 40% in about half the time as the LG. I don't need to rate a product by it's packaging or the quality of the drain hose which has nothing to do with the overall quality.

I am nos sure why, but I have found that in many cases (not just appliances) that things from brands that you have not heard of are commonly better than the "good" brand. good examples are Window air conditioners, most of what is made by Frigidaire and LG and the "good" brands are complete junk and very hard to service, but I have had several "no name" units that are pretty descent in design and allow for easy cleaning or servicing, the best one I have seen is an SPT 12,000 BTU unit, it was a breeze to take apart and clean (in fact better than some vintage units). And this is the case for other things as well. I have found that most modern LCD TVs are junk, and the only brand of them that I have found to be acceptable quality is the Olevia brand. They are heavy, made of good materials, and are simple but very reliable. I have several of them, and have never had a major issue. One of them is VERY high hour and was on all day every day since 2008 when it was new up until I got it about a year ago. And the only issue it ever had was some bad capacitors, which is not the fault of the TV, but the fault of the capacitor manufacturers who almost all had bad caps at that time. Sadly Syntax-Brillian, the company behind Olevia was much better at making TVs than they were running a business and they went under in 2009 and now the name is owned by emerson which is owned by Funai. I have seen one set under that name still for sale on Emerson's website, but it is just a rebranded Funai, and I am not sure they even sell that model.

I've had similar experiences, including store brand products vs. the big name brands. I suspect it's because these big brands are living off their past reputations still, meanwhile they're cutting every corner in the book doing all their manufacturing and design in some other part of the world at a fraction of the cost and quality. I suspect these odd name brands are also coming from China, but in their case, they need to have something at least somewhat satisfactory as most of their sales are first-impression. If someone buys something from one of those brands and it totally stinks, they most likely will never go to that brand again.

@@whitefox5155 Sadly, you will find that GE isn't the only issue, it is pretty much all modern appliances. They are junk.
