I work with Richie. The drummer/engineer who flushed. Great man and still sharp as a knife at 81. I've personally heard this story 100 times. Never gets old.
Tell him thanks for many years of awesome tunes. I still listen to those vinyls on a regular basis. I still gotta try to find a bunch of them tho. No record sales close to me.
Waylon later asked the engineer where the coke was, the engineer told him he flushed it down the toilet. Waylon then said " But that's all the money that we got Karen"
They weren't outlaws. They were dope heads. Staying out of jail with the millions from the record companies. They are about as real as any other pop act.
“They came pounding through the back door in the middle of the song. They got me for possession of something that was gone, long gone. Don’t you think this outlaw bit has done got out of hand?”
Woodsman Ghost I’ve often wondered what the actual lyrics were. It could have been ‘wasn’t singin through my nose’ or it could have been a play on those same words since the cocaine had a lot to do with how he was recording...
Budget: $250 an hour for studio time... $20,000 for 2 pounds of cocaine wasted in the toilet. (Though, other sources say it was actually only an ounce)... Result: A song that made millions of dollars and helped an album go platinum... Waylon was one hell of a businessman.
if he was paying $20,000 a K back then he was getting super ripped off. fuck I was getting them in the 2000's for $14,000 straight off the boat, one solid block with cream and yellow veins, was soooo good
@@randyreynolds4252 yeah, I Googled that price. Not sure how much blow costs, especially back in the 70s. However, you never know. It might have gone through a few dealers by the time it got to him. And if they knew it was Waylon, he possibly did get screwed on the price just cause they knew he had the money.
I love Waylon. His music helped me through a lot of good times and bad times in my life. I bet he loved me too. Those were the good ole days people. I don’t know what the hell we got going on these days. We have lost our way.
That’s the best comment. “I bet he loved me too”! Right on. I feel you. That’s the real power of music right there. We’ve certainly lost our way now. But you reminded me of a simpler time. It still lives in the old songs. Be well, JP. 🙏🏻
Cool story. I always thought Waylon looked a little strung out on the Ramblin' Man album cover, lol. Waylon was real. I love the story on how he walked out on Tom Snyder.
I went into the office of a club we were playin' in Portland to get paid for the week. I almost fainted when I saw gallons and gallons of coke on the shelves behind the owner's desk. As I waited for him to come in, the bouncer sauntered in. I KNEW I was going to jail....there I was, sittin' there in that room with all that coke. He saw my face and just about busted a gut laughin'. He said, "where the hell do you think it comes from?" He was a Portland cop. I was so young and SO naive. That was 1981.
Anybody know if Mike Judge is doing another season? I really liked this show. The country music season was my favorite but I liked how he branched out and did something different in the second season with the funk/r&b genre
I read that it was actually only an ounce of coke (27 grams to be exact). Of course, I also read that Waylon used to buy it by the pound or kilo. So, who knows for sure. Maybe it arrived as a kilo, but by the time the DEA agents arrived, they were down to an ounce. Two pounds of coke ($10,000 -$20,000?) is a lot to risk having someone mail it to you. I'm sure everyone speaking in this interview was lit at the time, as well. So, there's probably some mixed memories.
"We were wrapped up in our music, that's why we never saw, the cars pull up, the boys get out and the room filled up with law. . .they came bounding through the backdoor in the middle of the song. . ." Yeah sounds about right!
I’ve got a friend inside CLUB FED he said that a family was busted in the time of the crack epidemic when they were SETTING EXAMPLES. SAID ALL FOUR BROTHERS PASSED AWAY INSIDE SERVING MULTIPLE LIFE SENTENCES THAT TODAY WOULD GET PROBATION OR 5yrs . And yes they were BLACK .
I watched David Crosby get busted for freebasing coke in the back room of a little rock n' roll club in Dallas called Cardi's back in 1982. I was sitting at the bar close to the front door. I just about shit my pants when all those cops came in.
Being a snitch is definitely an American thing. No where in the world do you get let off Scot free of serious crime for grassing somebody up. Some mafia dudes confess to murder, snitch on someone else, then get a couple years in prison as if the multiple murderer is totally safe in the community. Look up Sammy the bull Gravano for instance, he confessed to something like 18 murders yet he is walking the streets today, it's fucking madness.
@@therealrobbdee672 yes I know. He got nicked at the same time as a British guy called Shaun Atwood , they where rival's in Arizona at the same time, and they all got arrested.
@@gutz323 well I never really put all that information into real time thinking it really is absurd when you think about it it's amazing what goes down in this country
That's kinda what I thought. That they were going to call in the request and wait for the judge to ok the warrant, then someone would bring it while they waited.
@@keymaster430 i didn't know that the cops could do it like that. That seems a bit against the constitution. So cops can barge into your property and demand a search , and if you" say no get a search warrant " they can just waite in your property, which they needed one in the first place to even enter into it, and waite for one 🤔 ?
@@timgreenglass Purple Rain aside....please give the attached link a spin. We are having commercial success with it in Europe. It was recorded at Treasure Isle studios. Same place that Waylon recorded stuff. Produced by Bob Bender. I respect your opinion so please share your feedback.
Yeah I would’ve totally done a line in the bathroom. Well a pile really lol not a line. Then flushed it. So at least I’d be geeked out smoking a cigarette or 6 while they searched.
