I see a Wayne Carey highlights video, I click and I'm an Essendon supporter. Always enjoyed watching him play, not so much against the Bombers but he was one of the greatest.

Has there ever been as complete a player as Carey? He's in the conversation for the greatest contested mark ever, but was also an all time great when the ball hit the deck. He was far too strong for most defenders, and far to quick for those that could match his strength. He's without doubt the greatest player I've witnessed.
This is my humble opinion, the only player that has been almost complete overall as a player has been Lance Franklin in terms of power, prowess, X-factor, presence and is often included in the conversation regarding the best players in AFL history.
@@joememphis1571 Franklin may have been a little quicker and perhaps more mercurial, but the the thing that separates Carey from him is his dominance in a marking contest. I don't think I've seen a better mark than Carey, and when he wasn't able to get the mark, his ability to play the ball to his crummers advantage was also the best than I've seen. Carey was also a more reliable shot on goal than Franklin.
@@stevenkeyte8749 You’re correct about Carey being a better mark as he was more dominant and one of the best contested marks for a man of his size that I had ever seen. Carey had 727 goals and 443 behinds where Buddy has 1008 goals and 755 behinds.

Thanks for the video, it's brilliant. Hard to believe he never won Goal of the Year or Mark of the Year, there are a number in the video that were more than worthy. I love the fact that we bought the rights to Carey and Longmire from the Swans when they were 15 for about 20k and a packet of Smarties. One of the greatest deals in VFL/AFL history. Easily the best player I've ever seen, and he played most of his career at my club. Go North!
One of the all time greats in AFL history. He played Centre half-forward like a full-forward as he kicked 10 goals in a game (1996 vs Melbourne and 1999 vs Essendon) twice and had kicked five majors in a game on 42 occasions. He also played CHF like a midfielder as he could get 20 to 25 possessions per game. On 32 occasions he kicked five plus goals and had 20 or more disposals in the same game. He made defenders bar Glen Jackovich, Stephen Silvagni and Chris Grant shit themselves in fear with his presence. His name was his reputation.
Even Leigh Matthews who is universally accepted as the AFL’s greatest player of all time has said that Wayne Carey was the best player he had ever seen.
@@bobowens9798 The difference between Matthews and Carey is that Matthews was a rover, centreman and forward pocket. 1977 he had over 650 possessions and kicked 91 goals averaging 27.4 disposals and 3.8 goals per game as a Midfielder!!! He was revolutionary and innovative as a player.
Leigh Matthews was a B&F winner in a premiership winning year with Hawthorn in 1971 as a 19 year old. And that despite Peter Hudson kicking 147 goals for the year.@@joememphis1571

Seven out of eight years the Roos made the preliminary final, 3 grand finals in four years (victories in 1996 and 1999), captain of the shinboners for 184 games (130-50-4 during the nine year span), kicked 80 goals twice at centre half forward (1996, 1998), between 1993 to 2000, he kicked 524 goals, took 1279 marks played 170 games, notched 3124 disposals. Averaging 17 disposals, 7.5 marks and 3.1 goals per game during that span. Twice he kicked 10 majors in a game (1996 vs Melbourne where he had 31 possessions, 15 marks (11 of those were contested), 11 goals two behinds) (1999 where he kicked exactly 10 goals five behinds to go with 23 disposals and ten marks against Essendon in a showdown against Matthew Lloyd who had 17 disposals (15 kicks and two handballs), 7 marks and 7 goals two behinds. )

Two of the AFL’s all time greats in the Velvet Sledgehammer and Kouta. Kouta played every position on the ground at will and gave fans and opponents goosebumps with his presence. Matthew Lloyd became of the all time great full-forwards, kicking 100 goals twice (2000 and 2001), won three Coleman Medals in four years between 2000 and 2003, 926 goals in 270 games over 15 seasons. If it wasn’t for injuries, he would have had 1100 goals for sure.

In my humble opinion both Carey and Ablett were great. Carey played CHF like a full-forward as he could kick multiple snags in a game and he could notch 20 or 25 disposals like a midfielder. Best contested mark for a man of his size I had ever seen. Vice like grip, breathtaking aerialist especially when he took pack marks. Could kick goals with his right and left feet. Ablett was a non-specialist forward in the early part of his career as he alternated between the half forward flank and wing, kicked nine goals (and won the Norm Smith Medal) in a losing grand final side against the Hawks in one of the all time great grand finals of AFL history. Kicked 100 goals 3 times in a row (129 in 1993, 124 in 1994 and 122 in 1995), winning the Coleman Medal in 1993, 1994, and 1995. Carey won two flags and Ablett was winless in four grand finals. Carey is the King 👑
