Series 1 was wicked. Toby Jones, who played David Pilcher, is a fellow Brit who I thought was American when I first saw him in *"The Mist."* He is one of our top actors.
Seems like the only original character from the first season, who survived is, Arlene? I think that’s the name of the sheriff secretary chick from New Jersey
I was looking for a opinion like this. I thought that no one would talk about the show. When it was in the air i had so many expectations for season and later was a big disappointment. The show had so much to tell yet.
Great video. The Mrs and I watched the brilliant season 1 and just... Looked at each other for s2 like , wtf is this? You summed it up very well. Bad direction and not having the cast for s2 doomed it
It seems like they attempted a very badly executed walking dead "no one is safe" tactic and it off course went horribly wrong. That type of writing can work but has to be executed correctly. If they wanted that shock factor killing off Ethan worked and they should have kept been around at least for a while if they really felt they needed an extra shock factor that soon after Amy would have been better to kill off or even Theresa.
They should have doubled down on TWD tactic and brought Ethan back out of nowhere. At least then they maybe could have made a third and final season that wasn’t terrible and embarrassing like s2.
Here's what should've happened. Season 2 episode 1(1 hour long): Everyone is living in the mountain complex now and a few weeks have passed. Ben is in his little coma, Kate and Pam are working on a plan to rebuild wayward pines. Meanwhile, Jason and the first generation take weapons and begin to make their way to clear out remainder abbies, within 20 minutes of the episode they make it inside the complex they hold Pam and Kate as prisoners for killing Piltcher, and freeze Ben as a precaution. Instead of three years, only a year goes by. Ben gets unfrozen, Amy reunites with him, Ben meets a few first generations and they start a miltia and break out Kate from prison. 3 year time jump happens, we get a scene where Jason has his army trying to locate Ben's army. In the process, both armys fight and Kate gets shot and captured. Next they bring in Dr. Burke (a little teaser) because it turns out that they have Ethan's younger brother (since Jenkin's is Matt Dillion's brother irl) perform surgery on Kate. Kate survives, she has that moment with Jason, but then uh Jason's "mother" goes in and tries to excuete Kate but Kate fights her back but in the struggle Kate gets killed cause the lady sticks a knife in her shot wound. Yada yada, Dr Burke reunites with his indian wife, and later finds out that Theresa and Ben are there and reunites with them, joins their miltia and bing bang. Plot twists: Kate isn't dead because Piltcher has a set of each of the kidnapped human's DNA samples to reclone them. So, someone can just revive her and possibly Ethan. So after Carla and Matt finished their other projects, they can still return. OH and as a special treat for fans, I'd include flashback memories of significant events of the 3 years we didn't get to see. Like planning ideas, fight scenes, etc. Like maybe 2 or 3 of those filmed at least.
I always HATED the ending of the first season. The show was good until the end. The book series had a PERFECT ending, and I was expecting the show to have a similar ending. But the whole “first generation” thing just killed the entire show. And I was kind of mad they killed off Ethan
The oremise of the show is absurd. Thise mutants arent particularly strong or fast and have no armor tech or guns. Anyone that thinks 5k unarmed people are going to over run 500 well armed and entrenched troops is insane. That being said having 1k people and only 50 troops is idiotic especially if youre under threat of literal monsters.
Yup. I can DEFINITELY see why Matt Dillon had no problem with his getting killed off at the end of season one. You could see that the storyline was going to crap quickly and Matt Dillon didn’t want Any part of it.
I've posted something like this on "Season 3". the problem was the late release date. Nobody expected it to go beyond one year so when it became a hit they made Season 2 but by that time all the actors had move on. They could only put in cameo appearances for the second season.
The first season is a brilliant example of writing. The second season is a just metaphor for humanity. Great elders leave us a strong foundation in society. The young people want to change things. They screw it all up till we repeat.
I recently started this show and I was hooked with season one. It was so good yet the second season just was complete trash. They literally killed off any reason for returning fans to enjoy it. I had to quit mid season two after finding out about Ben. It ruined the show so bad and so quick.
I just finished this show with my friend and jeez, I wish there was another season 😭 I don’t like how they ended season two especially with the finale. I wish there was more information at least on the internet since it’s unlikely for a season 3 :/
I have always been wanting a wayward pines review so thanks man. Also, if u dont mind some criticism: the audio quality isn't bad but isn't good either, I think i can hear the fan but that might just me. Also, be sure to include the "video is fair under copyright use" or some authority *might* flag ur videos. Also, make sure to include tags such as #waywardpines etc so ur video gets recommended more. Overall great stuff and it will be fun to watch u grow. Subscribed.
I agree the audio is pretty trash. It was all I had at the time but have since gotten a mic so that should improve the quality. Anyway thanks for the advice with tags and copyright stuff. I will add that stuff to my next videos and thanks for the sub! Really appreciated!
Good review on the series and its entirety if you are still doing video reviews; I have a few suggestions on some series like Castle Rock, Westworld, and Raised by Wolves.
Lol I had no idea what I was watching with season 2 because I thought it was a new show when it came out and I was so confused with what was going on because I wanted them to explain it How did I not know there was a season one
@@picklecookies yeah I was just really confused because as I said I thought season 2 was season 1 and I just randomly thought about the show years later and got confused because I saw the season 1 synopsis But nic cage would make season 3 great
They should have just stopped at s1 with the ending where everyone dies. I mean that's realistically what would have happened. Pilcher was 100% right, people like the two MC's are sheep that can't wrap their head around ends justify the means. Especially in situations like the concept of the show, where everything hinges on the town surviving. The moment Pilcher "chose" Ethan & Kate it spelled doom for the entire town when he woke them up. Especially Kate, minutes after finding out the actual state of the world, this dumb bimbo leads the abbies inside the mountain risking what's left of the human race all because of what she thinks is "right". The only mistake Pilcher made is not having way more guards/security or maybe planting a chip inside everyone that you can kill them with a press of a button. Sure it's extremely totalitarian, but this proves when the stakes are ridiculously high, you have to be a tyrant unfortunately. Great series up until the final episode where it went off the rails completely.
Their was nothing wrong with using Jason Patric as the new main character he is a good actor and he played Michael in The Lost Boys. The problem here is the First Generation dictatorship which was stupid. I mean Pilcher made it clear they had no army no police force and that the First Generation was very important to lead the town but had no training. I did hear Pilcher even mention anyone who could do the job of trainer. I mean they act like they were trained to be military from birth which was not true. The show should have concentrated more on what is beyond Wayward Pines and not just the Abbys but what else. What does the rest of the world look like. I did like how they showed the way Wayward Pines was built but wish they would have just covered that more in Season 1. This whole 'We are running out of supplies" plot was also stupid. I mean Pilcher was to plan for everything so this idea he used generic everyday people and not the brightest is stupid. Not enough doctors chosen not enough meds to go around or anyone to produce them. The whole "soil has changed plot" was stupid and never fully explained on why the soil changed just that it did for some messed up reason. They just saw the ratings drop and they could not explain it and started throwing everything at the story that no one cared.
When my girl amy didn't show up anymore I was done! But killing off all the main characters wow yall 🤮 yup! They did us dirty when they made Jason a main character just like naughty dog made us play as abbie 🤬 yall don't know how many suicides went down there
THX... in my case..i knew before (wiki) only 2 seasons... i lost the interest on s1e4... nice start but very fast stupid and boring... just for fair play i watched a bit of the last episode.. YES shitty trash.... my tip is true detective... season 1 is a perfect and finished story, season 2 is also a whole own story... season 3 you may skip
Episode 5 is a complete genre switch and that's not for everyone so I don't blame you for dropping the show so early. True Detective has been on my watch list for a while but haven't gotten around to it. I'll try and get to it soon based on your recommendation.
I’ll have you know that I’m lactose intolerant and still love ice cream! Sometimes it’s worth the hour long trips to the bathroom where I’m drenched in sweat and screaming in agony! Great review by the way man
Sooo true. Also, I think a bunch of "woke" stuff messes with season 2. The main character in season 2 was so boring that it just became annoying. He was kindof a Mary Sue.
Wayward Pines: We've developed a good character! Also Wayward Pines: Now that they just developed, let's throw them away! Gotta be original for those views!
Season 2 of Wayward Pines managed to do what Season 6 or 7 does for most shows. The writers had no idea what to do or where to go or how to keep the show interesting so they just started throwing garbage at the screen full of plot holes and characters nobody cares about
I watched the first episode of s2, and realized that the entire season would be following that doctor or whatever as the main character. I’m not sure how they allowed the guy on the set. His acting was outright embarrassing to watch. And he’s the most boring character in that one episode that I’ve ever seen. I really enjoyed the first season a lot, and fell asleep trying to get through the first episode of s2. Crazy how they thought killing Ethan and following a new random guy as the lead was a good idea whatsoever. Him and his embarrassing acting, paired with the most boring possible storyline they could have gone with after the events of s1, made me not watch any further. I just don’t care. The first season becomes pointless at that point. I went from really liking the show to being unable to even watch the second season. The young adults/kids being the new main players was also horrible to me. There are so many things they could have done differently that would have been insanely better than where they went with it. S1 is great, but I can’t recommend it to anyone because s2 ruins it.
I can only assume that they killed the writers and producers after season 1 as well as all the good characters. It’s the only explanation for such an appalling second season.
I loved the story idea of waking up 2000 years in the future. After season 1 I wanted to watch season 2 as soon as possible. Finished it today and well.... I disliked it so mutch. Their was no real "main character" in my opinion. People like Jason, who I really disliked, where shown so many times that it got really annoying soon. Like you said, everyone from season 1 just DIES. I thought Bens mum would end up becoming the main BUT NO...she dies and except searching for Ben and being kind she was kinda useless at the end like everyone Else in season 2 '_' Nice video, I agree with literally everything.
Season 1 was already seriously hampered when the sister of the main antagonist goes from icecold psychopathic bitch threatening to operate on the main protagonist without sedation to 'he lets assist you in overthrowing my brother'. The premise of the show is brilliant, and so is about 75% of season 1 in terms of its build up and reveals as there's a constant sense of dread and tension. But the ending where the aforementioned sister suddenly turns a 180 and becomes a character we're supposed to sympathize with felt so out of place it killed it for me.
I agree that it does feel a little odd how Nurse Pam does a 180 turn. But conceptually it works and I accept it with no problem. Nurse Pam and Megan Fisher are the opposing pillars of the story. Nurse Pam believed so much in David Pilcher's plan that she had lost sight of her humanity, but it's regaining her sense of humanity that saves her. The Nurse Pam we see by the end is the real Pam. Whereas Megan is simply a narcissist whose lack of humanity leaves her with nothing and ultimately destroys her. The juxtaposition of those two characters, who originally appeared to be on the same side when caught up in all the rhetoric, drives home the whole point of the show that it is humanity that will save mankind.
Heard season 2 was disappointing so just decided to watch this recap instead. Such a shame to see when promising stuff fumbles. Especially after the back of just finishing The Prisoner (1966)
This is an awesome video dude! Absolutely well done. Not enough people cover this show and it’s all around really forgotten. Wayward pines had the potential to be an all time great show in my opinion, season 1 was fantastic. Unfortunately season 2 fell really short and did not allow for a season 3 to come out. I definitely didn’t think season 2 was terrible, it had some good aspects and episodes that I enjoyed. However it definitely fell short of season 1, and the lack of viewers is what ultimately caused the show to end. It’s really disappointing considering we could have experienced a top tier show
From what I hear, season one was based off the book trilogy and was meant to be solely a mini series. Because it got good ratings they decided to make another season with no source material and no involvement from the author. I just finished season 1 on Hulu and didn't bother watching season 2 and I'm happy I didn't.
I only watched like 2 episodes and thought it was bullshit Cas they kept on killing off characters so I considered it non cannon, they honestly should of just had one season
Does the book or books end where s1 ended? That seems like a super cliffhanger ending for a story. You made the right call on not watching s2. One episode was all I was able to get through before wanting to eat the barrel of a shotgun.
When I saw first episode of S1 it was my favorite show of all time. It's a shame what happened in S2... Would be best if they just did one season and that's it. It's crazy how bad S2 was.
I just watched this show for the first time and after 5 episodes into season 2 I couldn't bear to watch it anymore. I thought it was garbage and boring. Then I stumbled on your video and it perfectly summed up how I felt. I felt before seeing your video that the main characters really carried the series and to kill them off and reintroduce the storyline minus the curiosity of what's going on with new characters was boring as heck to me
I just re-watched in May 2023. Exactly 8 years after the first episode of season 1 aired in 2015. I watched all it again to refresh my mind and the nostalgia is surreal. I remember how disappointed and shocked i was at the finale. Also remember how obsessed i was with Theresa back then. Lovely actress Now after binging Season 2 i feel like i shouldn't have watched it. It was just a letdown.
This series was so ludicrous and absurd I don't know how anyone could say that season one was perfection. Once I got to the big reveal it was all downhill from there. This series is full of plot holes and it's poorly written, it's a dumpster fire of a series.
Right. Who ever wrote this show doesnt understand the power of guns and even basic tactics. They claim these muties are able to take down a group of armed men but then have unarmed women and kids beat them handily. These things were only a threat due to the people being even dumber.
Really interesting assessment (and very witty too). I particularly liked your breakdown of David Pilcher, and your idea about switching around the character paths of Jason and Kerry (a missed opportunity there for sure). Regarding Megan Fisher- It was clearly meant to be read that Megan died in Season One; stripped of her authority, her husband's awkward impersonal goodbye kiss, and no longer belonging to either camp, she dies alone in the dark at the hands of the monsters. It was a fitting ending for her character and gave the audience a deep sense of poetic justice. Bringing her back just undermined that.
@@picklecookies After watching your video I decided to rewatch Season One again (this is about the 5th time seeing it now). There is one thing that has always niggled me in S1. At the very beginning of episode one, straight off the bat we are told that Ethan had an affair with Kate. Kate being a character who we haven't even been introduced to yet, and therefore we have no emotional involvement with her. In the second episode (which I've just finished watching), the scene in the toy store with the ducks, there is this exchange of dialogue regarding Kate's marriage to Harold... Ethan: Well, I never got the wedding invitation. Kate: We kept it intimate. Ethan: Yeah. So did we. THAT'S the moment when it should have been revealed they had a ding-dong together. The audience's reaction would undoubtedly have been "Ooooooh!!!" Other than that, S1 is quite perfect. But yeah, that has always niggled me^^ It's been a few years now since I last saw this and I'm loving it.
I just finished season one and won't bother with the next season....all the main actors have left and they're just riding on the coat tails of the original
Great video I feel your pain lol I was hoping the doc would go make peace with the leader Abby while everyone went to sleep to fade to black then they wake up 2000 years later and look out the window to see abbys in clothes working and living and there's no more wall so they can see more city development
You nailed it. This was dismal. I watched it for Matt Dillon, an actor I believe has had too few big parts. WHY??? Why would they squander such an opportunity? Was there some squabble with the producers?
I watched all of Season 1 in a DAY. And when Season 2 aired, i was watching it immediately. When they killed off Ben, I was HIGHLY UPSET. And the minute i realized the incest plot, i hated the show. But i watched it to the end. I was hoping Season 3 would fix the issues of Season 2 and wrap up the story. But nope.
I think about this show every now and again; only caught a few episodes, and had to Wiki to find out about the future, the Abbies, and everything. I got caught up watching those synopsis videos you see on here for everything (the title is something like people aging 100 in a day; they don't seem to get a lot of subtext of shows sometimes), and have been looking for content, which brought me here. I think Season 2 needed a mystery: some good options were "why isn't the food growing", "the Abbies, what's their real deal", and "what do you mean our power source isn't functioning"? The first and third ones work really well, with the Doc finding references to "the problem" and assumes it's the rebels, or that the world isn't ready, and when Jason dies, the truth is discovered, but things are so screwed up there's no way to fix it, except pulling another Pilcher and refreezing as many as they can. Discovering more about the Abbies would require changing somethings about the show, like maybe they're starting to see babies born in WP are starting to show symptoms of being an Abbie, but that really changes a lot and kinda throws science out the window. One idea with people left behind and people frozen for season 3 is they thaw out, mostly because the system is crashing, and they head out into the world, and discover that the remaining humans and the Abbies built a better world together, with legends about what slept in the mountain. Now the WP people are a resource to be harvested by the competing clans of Neo-Abbies: instead of saving humanity, Pilcher's plan has doomed the last of them.
Thanks for the recap. I only read the books, but I was interested in seeing how the tv show was like. It's dumb to adapt all the 3 books into one season and then make a second season which looks like fanfiction
I still think about this show on and off, it really is a shame season 2 was so poorly done. As soon as it started and the Nazi style teenagers had suddenly taken over the town, I was thinking what the hell? It didn't help the lead actor Jason Patric? is pretty terrible at, well, acting. The sad thing is, it could've been so much better, but there were numerous flaws with the original story regarding the time spent in cryo anyways It was 2000 years into the future. How on earth did any of that tech run for 100 years, let alone 2000 years and still look pristine? It's just not possible. Season 2 was a further 2000 years into the future from memory, just silly. Would've been much better if they'd started the hibernation right as the world was going to shit, then woken everyone up again 50 years later That would've opened up an entire pandoras box of possible stories, like exploring nearby towns or major cities, finding possible survivors and such. But even the acting chops of the great Toby jones and that sadistic nurse lady couldn't save the show.
Once they Killed off Ethan I knew that was a Mistake. I wasn't as enthusiastic about Season 2. I knew it was gonna go to $hit from there. The shock of kiting him wasn't working he carried the show for me. There was no reason for them to kill Pilcher and Ethan one of them should of survived just because of the knowledge and experience they had it made the show interesting.
Thanks for the summary, I'm glad I didn't watch the second season. I've tried the first episode, but I wasn't able to finish it. I just couldn't care less about what was happening there.
Frankly I think this shows producers donot know what they are doing. Seasons 1 was good and they should have just ended the show there, instead of making Season 2 onwards, the shows producers maybe could have made a film , maybe with sequels which I think may have been better. In Season 1 there is an element of mystery which I feel made many people watch the show, after Season 1 there is no mystery which definitely is a demerit for the show. For any show, story there has to be mystery. Except for Season 1 this is a bad show.
ok ethan burke death can be tolerated, he died heros death but then in season 2 some whiny kid with his girlfriend which turns out to be his mom,he takes over & his shitty story, theway kate death, theresa & Ben Death, thats the most stupid season for any show
I adored season one and I agree season 2 was ridiculous (it actually shouldn't have been made), but the book trilogy is even better. One of the best series I've ever read.
civilization cannot be built on lies, where people are in suspense and discontent. he had the foresight and planned well but he wasn't meant to be a good leader. he succeeded and should have pass on the reigns
If they would have kept the original actor alive and the son n carried it similar to twd, without as many seasons it woulda went down as one of tv's best shows
I love this review. Pretty funny and true. I watched season 1 and liked it, then I watched 10mins of the first episode of season 2, and I realized it was a walmart copy of season 1 like you said. Looking forward to more reviews from you
