I’ve been obsessed with this song since the year 2001 when I first watched The Pledge. It has provided me with much needed comfort all these years. A song of immense beauty.

The best song I have ever heard in this life. What an incredible voice!!

Do you know the story behind this song? The Orchestra and Wazimbo were in London to record. During a break near the end of the recording stations, Wazimbo stayed in the studio, picked up a 12-string, and played this simple folk song. Unknown to him, in the recording booth, they hadn't shut off the tape machine. Later, in post production, Wazimbo gets a call about this song. "What song" he says. They describe it, say it's the hottest thing laid down on the session from a commercial standpoint, and demand that it be a track on the record. So. What could he say? It launched an international best selling hit for a while. I don't know how much it sold, ultimately, but it was far past the popularity of the other tunes on that album. There are other little weird facts about this guy. Like the one that he's the only male vocalist at that time allowed to be on radio in Mozambique. Weird politics, too.

He makes me feel proud of being a mozambican. Thank you, Sir Wazimbo, for showing the world a bit of us.

the song is translated "Nightbird"...it is about a woman "Maria"...who is at the clubs/bars every night and will never find a man if she keeps up with that kind of behavior....such a great song. simple and sweet...makes me love music everytime i hear it. When I watched The Pledge the first time in the theaters with my dad we both remembered the music particularily this song....it is amazing. Good job Sean Penn for introducing me to this track.

Carl A - When I first saw The Pledge several years ago and this song was played while Jack N is out on the lake fishing I immediately had to have....so I researched it, found it, and have enjoyed it ever sense. A magnificent song if you 'feel' music....

I too discovered this song from the motion picture The Pledge. It's the " night bird or nightingale " It's about him being heartbroken over his wife or gf cheating. Or so I've been told. Equally important, we don't speak or understand the language but love the melody and chords. Just goes to show music like love, or in this case heart break is universal? Cheers🍷

Hulwana is a bat in XiRonga - a night bird. So Nwahulwana in my native Ronga means one associated with the bat. So the song is about Maria who comes out night like a bat and gets drinks from men at various bars and sleeps with them. Maria is of loose morals. He is chastising her for her loose ways, and that no man would want to marry such a loose woman.
