Warner Brothers classic TV westerns were launched with CHEYENNE starring Clint Walker. With a workload of 39 hour long episodes needed for the weekly time slot, studio executives launched a rotating companion western starring Will Hutchins as roving law student Tom Brewster in SUGARFOOT. What was it like on the busy lot? What kind of man was Clint Walker? How did Jack Warner treat his stars? When SUGARFOOT ended, how did Will feel when he appeared with James Arness as a hunted killer on GUNSMOKE in the classic episode "Blind Man's Bluff?" As a Warner Brothers contract player, Will co-starred in several hit movies including two classic war films, LAFAYETTE ESCADRILLE, directed by Oscar winner William Wellman and featuring an exciting cast of young talent, including Clint Eastwood and William Wellman, Jr. portraying his father! Hutch was prominently featured in the true story of the WWII fighting force MERRILL'S MARAUDERS starring Jeff Chandler and directed by the great Sam Fuller. Will also starred with Jack Nicholson in director Monte Hellman's cult favorite, THE SHOOTING. All this and more in an exclusive A WORD ON WESTERNS zoom interview done April 2021 with Will Hutchins in New York and Rob Word in Hollywood.

What a wonderful episode. Mr Hutchins has an incredible memory. I appreciate all the pics of Clint Walker, he was the most handsome man in Hollywood. He seemed to be such a good man too. It's a shame what the movies have turned into since those days.

No words can ever express what interviews such as this mean to me and I’m sure many others who grew up as I did in the 1950s and 60s. Will Hutchins, Clint Walker and all of the Warner Bros. western stars are part of our growing up years and bring back so many fond feelings and memories. And like Will said at the close of this interview in reference to you Rob…”You are the master.” From the first time I ever saw him on the screen I sensed a true genuineness and very likable person. And now over 60 years later I can still say that. Thank you again for sharing another great video interview.

This was one of your best interviews. Always loved Will and Sugarfoot. What a character, especially for 91 years old. " It added ambulance to the movie.", Will could have been a comedian. I didn't know he was a real circus clown. Keep them coming. Your shows should all be enshrined into the Library of Congress, for future generations.

It's no coincidence that the decline in popularity of Westerns has matched a similar decline in the traditional values of America. Will, Clint, James and the rest represented an ideal that seemingly few aspire to today. And what we've gotten in their stead is something no kid can look up to. Much to the detriment of our country, and that truly is a shame.

Take heart, friend. Whenever a western is made now (though they be few and far between) the mystique still remains, even when the film fails to make full use of it. As long as its history is recalled and the imagination may wander over the vast emptinesses of our plains and deserts and wonder about legendary times and extraordinary people, there will be a place in our hearts for the western.

Nothing is greater than waking up early with a great cup of coffee and watching Will Hutchins being interviewed by the great Rob Word. I've come to know Will Hutchins over the years and he is the kindest, most genuine, and funny-as-all-get-go person I have ever come in contact with. Another great interview highlighting Will's incredible career and his interactions with so many of the great legends we have come to love and who we have sadly lost over the years. Will is a down to earth likable guy with a smile on his face, quick wit, and contagious laugh that is so uplifting and refreshing in this divided world we live in. One of Will's films that rarely gets mentioned is Claudelle Inglish, a dark and tragic film that has many components of what makes a great film: characterization, setting, mood, cinematology, and good dialogue. Will gives a magnificent and memorable performance in this film. I would love to hear what others think of this movie. Of course, my heart always goes back to Sugarfoot and the adventures of Tom Brewster, a student of law who brilliantly combines the merits of a cowboy hero: bravery, fortitude, quick on the draw, and a moral code we should all strive for. In a few more words I will summarize by saying that, I LOVE THIS MAN DEARLY.

More greats! Clint Walker and I shared Birthdays, several years apart. He's still one of my role models today. I think the film Fort Dobbs, is the quintessential Clint Walker, showing him as he lived his life.Merrill's Marauders is another favorite film I watch annually. 👍👏🙏🇺🇸

Fantastic interview with Will Hutchins, he’s just a delightful guy, Rob. Just a little tidbit, Rob, I went to the same high school as Nick Nolte, Westside high school in Omaha, Nebraska. I had a teacher back then that was one of his teachers, and he’d tell a few stories about him.

He and the head football coach got in a verbal match from something he did during the field of play, well, he wound up quitting the team and walked off the field in the middle of a live play. He had a bit of a hot head. A friend of mine in high school mother graduated with him in 1959.

Will Hutchins is an American treasure.....as WB archivist I first met Will about 40 years ago when he came to USC to check out all the SUGARFOOT photos we had and a friendship between he and Babs began.....my wife did a school read-in in the Lennox School District and Will and Barbara were there......we've spent many grand days at their home on Long Island, but what's impressed me the most are how good Will's performances on SUGARFOOT remain....lawyer, fist fighter, quick gun, heartsick lover, comic relief.....Will did it all and those performances will last forever.......thanks for posting this, Rob, and keep your Word going....us western lovers need our fix....

Will Hutchins has really aged well! His mind is sharp as they come and he has a fantastic memory; he didn't stumble or even hesitate with anything you asked him. He was clear and you could tell that he really enjoyed your interview. We can't any of us get enough of all those stories either. I didn't realize that Will was a 6' footer but when you have so many giants at the same studio you look small beside Clint Walker at 6'6" for sure. Anyway he's doing great at 91 and I hope he has plenty more birthdays. Thank you Rob.

Wow, what an incredible episode, Rob! This is the second interview I've seen you do with Will Hutchins and I would gladly watch much more, because he's such a great storyteller. All we had in the 50's & 60's was an old Black & White TV that took about 15 minutes to warm up. Then another 20 minutes to adjust the vertical and get the roll down to once every 10 minutes. I didn't even know Wizard of Oz was in color til high school; However, never missed an episode of Cheyenne, Sugarfoot, or Bronco. Thanks Rob.

Will Hutchins made a very distinctive appearance in the crazy 1973 TV Supernatural/Airplane Disaster movie "The Horror at 37,000 Feet" with fellow western stars Chuck Connors, Buddy Ebsen, and William Shatner. I never understood why Will wasn't a guest star in TV shows like "The Rockford Files" or even "The Fall Guy" where it seems like his persona would have worked well. This was a wonderful interview and I hope to see a Part II and even a Part III. Will has been a terrific font of knowledge over the years about Westerns and he definitely has plenty of more stories to tell.

I wish he and all the other folks who toiled at the myriad thankless jobs in Hollywood, looking for the big break, were paid enough to be comfortable. Will's car was ripped off, putting him on a bicycle for a dozen years. Maybe Elvis gave him the Harley.

Will Hutchins played so many characters, in so many TV shows and movies. Sometimes he was a star and sometimes a bit player. He was a working actor who rode the highs and lows of that lifestyle. He did various jobs to play the bills until the next time his acting could supply a bigger or regular paycheck. In this interview he shows that he was never super impressed with what he did, but enjoyed and was impressed by those whom he worked for and with. He genuinely was excited to both be involved in the process or being just a member of the audience. You set up Will, and then let him tell the stories going wherever he wanted to take it. You only interjected to emphasis certain points, or aid in recollections with a name or location. That's why this show gets the good stuff from people whom were involved in the projects, time and time again.

This has to be one of the top if not THE top interviews I’ve seen you do. What a wonderful character shows through in this Will Hutchens segment. I was preteen to early teens during the “Sugarfoot” era and a loyal fan of the cowboy heroes. Thank you Mr. Word for bringing to all of us fans of the old westerns such nuggets of those golden years. It would be so terriffic if they would make movies or series like they used to. But alas, who could write them like that. Or, what characters would they be able to find today that could play such parts with such depth in a convincing way? What a wonderful story of the comraderie that came out of so many of these films, that for the most part was a reality not just in the film. This atmosphere seems to be absent today.

It's sad that they don't stream many of the classic westerns. Growing up in the 70's all I saw was Wild, Wild, West, Bonanza, and Big Valley repeats on a regular. In the late 90's & early 00's I discovered Sugarfoot, Cheyenne, and Bronco on Starz western channel. It seems Bronco & Sugarfoot are rarely, if ever, shown anymore and there are dozens I've researched that I can never find outside of occasional bootlegs that were circulating in the time before streaming. It's a shame.

I watch Westerns daily on the INSP channel on Dish Network. Gunsmoke..Cheyenne..Virginian..Young Riders...Wagon Train and many more !! My favorite genre..❣❣

Well Rob, that was really well put together. I had forgotten alot of his other roles. I was a big 'Sugarfoot' fan. The connection with the Will Rogers movie makes sense. Will has a great memory and is very well spoken & polite. (Another one to keep away from Clu ) Thanks Rob, Really great work. Have a "Hoppy" Thanksgiving.

Well, THAT was fun! Now, I know this has nuthin' to do with nuthin', but all of us neighborhood kids used to play the marauders. We had no idea what the real story was, but we all had seen the film at various drive-ins, likely because all of our dads had been in the war. The woods in back of our houses made for a nearly perfect jungle for about a dozen baby boom families. I forgot all about it until today, so thanks for bringing that memory back! I bet you can't even GET toy machine guns now.

Rob, another gem, thanx. and Happy Thanksgiving. anyone who likes the GREEN (greatest dynasty in all of sport) is automatically OK w/ me. but this guy, who I've seen in only a handful of things (but they include that one outstanding GUNSMOKE, and 'the Shooting,' has a face in a class by itself, which makes you remember him. God bless him, he's still around . 91 according to Wikipedia. and lucid as can be. long live Will.

@@AWordonWesterns I watched nearly all the Warner Brothers westerns on television. I think that they had a lot to do with my moral code in later life. However, I was a big fan of "Sugarfoot" and Will Hutchins. Thanks, for doing these interviews and videos. I enjoy them. I love seeing the old western and television stars. I wish you could have done interviews with John Russell and Peter Brown from "Lawman." Keep up the great work!

Another great interview! I still need to see Merrill's Marauders, but I'm a fan of The Shooting and all Monte Hellman's films. Will seems to have led an interesting life and it's great to get these interviews and insights for prosperity from all these wonderful different actors that have touched in sometimes small but memorable ways

*Mr. Word, could you ask some of your interviewee's what kind of blanks they used on set? Were they the safest ones, Crimped? Just a Primer with sound dubbed in later? Or the dangerous ones with Wads? Also, how'd they keep their hearing after so many years of shooting guns?*

Ha! The reason so very many of the western film and TV stars are hard of hearing is that they DID use full load blanks. To help keep their hearing, many productions shifted to quarter loads. Still very loud, though.

Yes sir, that's what happened to my left ear. Pretty much deef in it now. @@AWordonWesterns Yup... Today, for safety reasons, I recommend Primers only with maybe some talc powder for smoke. They can dub in the bang post production pretty easy

Clint Walker had it all but he never made it big; I don't think he played the carnal Hollywood Babylon butt blaster games with producers and directors for favors like Arnold Schwarzenegger, Eastwood, Bronson, McQueen did.
