WBLS 107.5 New York - Frankie Crocker - December 1992 - Radio Aircheck
Back in the early 1970s, many African Americans in New York felt the radio stations were not addressing their concerns, or covering issues they were concerned with. Several Black leaders in New York decided to do something about it, by getting together, pooling resources, and buying a radio station. Percy Sutton, Malcolm X’s former attorney and then-Manhattan borough president, formed Inner City Broadcasting Corporation. With the backing of a group of black investors (including radio vet Hal Jackson) they bought WLIB, and later, it’s FM WLIB-FM, who's calls were changed to WBLS. WBLS became an R&B Powerhouse, continuing to dominate New York's radio landscape to this day.
This WBLS aircheck features Frankie Crocker in afternoon drive in 1992, during his 3rd tour of duty at WBLS, taking WBLS to the top of the ratings with his Urban Contemporary format.
Feel free to check out some of the many other videos on the Ellis B Feaster's Radio Channel! Established in 2008!
One of You Tube's oldest RADIO AIRCHECK MUSEUM with a NEW VIDEO posted daily at 3PM EST.
After over 40 years working on the radio, I have recorded lots of radio airchecks, and many from my friends as well.
You'll find audio of many radio personalities who have passed away. Lots radio recordings from the 1940s, through the 2010.
We also talk about radio broadcasting. If you happen to have classic airchecks, maybe even of yourself on the air, we'd love to share it here!
We also share videos about Travel & Cruising. I share tips on how I travel cheaply, so you can do it also! Find me on Facebook: / ellisairchecks

Another dope aircheck from one of the best to ever crack open a mic. The Chief Rocker Frankie Crocker. His cadence could translate easily into any format. He's top 5 for my favorite radio personalities of all time.

Oh my goodness, thank you for sharing this. I remember this day. Unfortunately, there were friends of mine, whom were students of Mr. Patrick Daly in Red Hook, not far from me in my hometown of Brooklyn NY. He was and is loved and remembered dearly. I also remember listening to this legend that was and is, Mr. Frankie Crocker. Mr. Ellis B. Feaster, you really put it into perspective, to cherish the good times we all have at some point and,or, if not another. Again, I thank you very much, sir

@@EllisFeaster I was a bored-op at BLS (pun intended) when Chuck was doing overnights. I ran the remotes from the clubs and in-studio DJ mixes, both live and recorded. Chuck relieved me at 1 & did 1-5 am Fri/Sat nites. I was working the night Alliyah's plane crashed. When Chuck came in the phones were lit-up...bananas! I stayed after-shift and helped screen/record the calls, with Chuck nodding yes to the good ones he would air. I didn't mind that I was off the clock because I really learned the Shortcut that night, and hey....it was Chuck Leonard! The next week when he came in, the man gifted me with a shirt from Macys....gift wrapped! That was the gentleman who was Chuck Leonard. The shirt doesn't fit anymore but I'm not giving it away....that's my Chuck Leonard shirt!

@@bsmith9506 I have heard so many great stories about Chuck over the years. It’s amazing that WBLS would have a legend like Chuck Leonard doing overnight, but it sounds like Chuck being the professional he was, gave it his best.
