Hey Roberto, thanks for making this video review. It's convinced me that buying the 24TB version is a good idea- nobody else showed a review of the web interface, configuration, or anything. Thanks!

Good series. Do you have any plans of reviewing any Synology NAS products?

superb, just watch out all ur review part of wd ex4 and you were done a great review... unfortunately these companies make and want to sell it to the common person like us, but they don't know how to give knowledge of this product to its user. I also see wd guy give a brief of this product on its website and here on youtube, but you hardly understand that because they don't have that vision that how common guy want to use this product and what things they face it.... but u make it simple and useful to us ... u can charge for that to WD because we paid them ; )

+satish vegad Hey Satish, glad that you found it useful, i really enjoyed testing it :) They´re videos are usually only teasers and not enough to remove all questions. Here what i do is actually test everything that i would like to know if i was purchasing one. I dont need them to pay me :) im glad just if i have the chance to test out before i buy anything, that is great. Thanks for the feedback!! All the Best. RJ

Great Video. I use the MyBooks, just prefer the USB over the NAS option, its faster obviously is the main reason. Other is to keep files off my network, more secure.

Exodist Photography Video Blog The My Book is great, i have 1 acting as a backup of one of the NAS. But for me having everything on the network is great, off course there are risks involved, but the way i have my network setup i think that i wont have probs. Thanks for the feedback!! RJ

Hi , nice video :) , i want to ask something. In the end of the video you said that you take backup from ex4 to the smaller ex2 with usb connection.What kind of backup is this ? Maybe an automatic compressed image from ex4 ?
@RobertoJorgeTech
@RobertoJorgeTech 8 лет назад
+arxigos21 Hi, thanks. The backup from the EX4 to EX2 is not on USB but on the Ethernet or even internet if they are on a diferent location for a off site backup. Trough USB we can backup to other USB HHDs RJ

Excellent review! I want to start using a NAS in my home and have been looking at the WD EX2 and the EX2100. Do you feel that the EX2100 would be necessary for a home network, or would the EX2 be sufficient? Currently in the US, the EX2100 4TB is $430 and the EX2 4TB is $330. Thanks!
@RobertoJorgeTech

D Roogle Hi Roogle, i would honestly save the 100 and get the EX2, mine is working fine for me after 1 year. The Ex2100 is a bit faster in reads an writes but not by that much so you will be more than fine. RJ

Thank you for the video. I want to try a NAS system and the EX 4100 look very nice, a lots of storage and a very friendly user interface. But I have a concern, the Ex 4100 has the same issue of the other WD external hard drives with hardware encryption? I mean, if the enclosure (NAS itself) fail or die, I lost all my data in the HDDs because the encryption key die with it?

If I fill up this NAS can I connect another EX4100 alongside it so they work together?
@RobertoJorgeTech
@RobertoJorgeTech 8 лет назад
+Jim Titheridge Hey Jim, humm work together as in expanded storage that wont work. There could be out there some tools that would allow us to create a virtual array of the 2 (i dont know of any) but if it was possible i would not use it as it would be asking fro trouble. I work with multiple NAS units (1 for work, 1 backup, 1 multimedia) and i find that this is the ideal scenario, get a 2nd NAS and connect it to the network and you will be able to use 1 for 1 usage and other for other usage. On the other hand if your problem is the lack of free space then i would suggest getting bigger drives to replace your current ones and then get a USB enclosure to place the old drives and use it as backup Hope i could hep with some toughs All the Best RJ
@Jimages_uk
@Jimages_uk 8 лет назад
my needs are more for back up and security than instant access, so working with separate NAS units could work I guess. Thanks for your reply.

Hey Leonardo, yes you can but be aware of the raid modes that you will use as you may lose space using different capacities for the same raid set RJ 👍👍

Have you try using other brand hard drive, ex: Seagate or other hard drive. The speed of hard drive matter?
@RobertoJorgeTech

Leonardo Chen On Network Units such as these NAS i cant get much more than 100-110 MBS so i prefer to use NAS grade HDD´s for these as they are prepared for less mistakes on Raid configs and i use only desktop grade HDDs (faster) on DAS units and on desktops etc RJ 👍👍

Hi Moises, when we use Raid 1, if 1 disk dies we can just replace it and the NAS will copy all data from the remaining good disk RJ 👍

@RobertoJorgeTech

+Stank Dawg Hi Stank, i would have to say hardware raid even though im not sure 100% but an indicator is the hot swap of the drives that as far as i know its only possible trough Hardware Raid. Hope it helps. RJ

Dearest Roberto Jorge, Hi there master! I'm pretty new to NAS system (never use one before) & has been backing up my business file manually from one external HDD to another. However, recently I have decided to look at NAS (as recommended by one of my colleague) because I acidentally lost my data twice before have the chance to mirror it to my other external HDD at home. I would truly appreciate if you could give some thought on my workflow & advice me on the solutions. So, I am a travelling business man working on 2 offices in different cities carrying my 1TB Samsung SSD where I stroe all my important personal & business file (I don't save data on internal HDD due to convenientity to move from one device to another). I would have to have the solutions when I can just plug this SSD hub to the NAS & they can mirror the all the data. I will then have this data being mirrored on the other disk inside the same NAS & back them up again in other remote NAS on my other office. Do you think it is possible or reddundant? 1. Please advice on the above issues 2. What brand should I get? WD/QNAP/SYNOLOGY (I'm particular about my device colour as much as the function & prefer it to be black rather than white) 3. Where this NAS should be placed best? as I assume it is not connected to the computer or it better be? For the time & effort you put to make this video & answering my inquiry I really appreciate it & can't thank you enough. Regards, Billy

Billy Rakhmat Sentosa Hi Billy, thanks for the feedback. Regarding your work flow with 2 offices i woud advise to have 1x NAS in each office so that each member in the office has access to it the fastest way possible (100mbs +-) configured in raid 1 and then 1 NAS at your home to backup the 2 office NAS, i know its a big investment but regarding data redundancy you will never have to worry about it any more. You could get away with just 1 NAS at home and haveing the computers at the offices accessing them externaly but its not so effective and theres actually no backup. Other Scenario would be 1 NAS at each office only and then 1 USB drive backing up each of the NAS but this is not as effective. For the 1st scenario i would suggest 1x WD EX2100 for each office and 1x WD4100 at your home or any other central point to backup remotely the 2 office NAS. And for you that travel, you dont need any more to carry any drive, all you need is a laptop and acess to the internet and you can have acess to any file from any of your NAS at all times. Regarding your other questions: 2- WD so far has been the best experience and very easy to setup remote acess and backups, wd server will take care of all the ports etc. 3- The Location would be as i mentioned above, and connected always to a router with acess to the internet. Hope that this is helpful, and although i know you only asked for 1 NAS for your workflow and 100% data security 3 would be the ideal, its an investement that im sure you wont regret. Another advice would be, get 1 at the time. Purchase a WD EX2100, install in 1 office and make it work, then get the 2nd one for the 2nd office and once you have everything setup, get the 3rd for your home to backup remotely the other 2. You just have to setup the remote backups once and forget about them. In case 1 of your offices burns (hope not) and the NAS dies you wull have all your data on the 3rd NAS. If you still have questions feel free to ask. Sorry for the long text. All the Best. RJ PS: Im not a master, im just a guy that is really passionate about tech :)

+Roberto Jorge (Tech Reviews) Roberto, What a nice person you are. & the anticipation for my office to burn down is fun :) ( fingger cross it wont happen as I build it myself ) Yes. I agree with you that the back up solutions is fundamental. people often do not realize the importance unless it happens ( to me twice ) & I am assure that you are the right guy who is equipped with skills, knowledge & experience to advice me. Well, I agree that 3 NAS will be the perfect scenario for me. however im quite surprised that NAS can be that expensive. Well, they will be a long term investment I believe. but I will select your last scenario advice to build my NAS empire step by step. Basically my work require my to stay/live on one of the office (is like a SoHo) so I will start to purchase 1 NAS here & then subsequently install one on my house in my hometown (as the back up) . The other office there won't really need a NAS as I usually work with my ext.SSD around with the considerations & inquiries below (of course it will good to have 3 NAS set up respectively in the future) 1. I dont share files with my employee via could much (well after this NAS set up I will definitely give it a try for convenient) 2. Internet speed in Indonesia is slow and unstable unlike in Singapore/Taiwan or Korea where I use to live. How does it affect the NAS function (in terms of the upload&download speed) as I am assuming that NAS works the same with "Cloud" services like dropbox "only" u have total control & security of your data as you store it personally in ur terretory. pls correct me if I am wrong? 3. Yes. I was similarly thinking WD ex2100 & ex4100 are the one (what is their differences with ex4 & dl2100 dl4100) until I see the QNAP TS-253pro? I was deciding to go with QNAP TS453mini (on my first office) & QNAP TS253pro (on my second) because QNAP is equiped their NAS with QvPC (virtual PC) feature ( which connect the NAS to any monitor via HDMI & function as a semi-PC more likely a Home-Theathre-Media) . Does WD have this feature as it doesnt have HDMI out port. pls advice on my selection. 4. Due to this feature. Where hould I set up my NAS beside my TV LCD (on my bedroom) or my Computer (on my workingroom)? I assume NAS doesnt connected to PC via any cables right? Last but not least, 5. How do I snyc my External SSD to my NAS? I feel comfortable working with my Ext SSD everywhere. What I truly need is to plug this SSD everynight & it will mirror (snyc) whatever new items change on my SSD (whether I add/remove/change a files) . Is possible? 2 reasons why I cant work conveniently via could is certain places do not have the internet connection and second if they do they are very slow in term of speed. Well, my apologize for lengthy & longwinded writting. I'm exhausted from long day of work. I always watch youtube before going to bed & I thought u r one of the best reviewer I have seen. In the begining I thought ur video is too long (some may reach 15-20mins) which make some people reluctant to open it up. but after understanding your perspective I value your effort to elaborate and explain everything in detail. some people will find it useful (like me) but some will think is too deed so I think u should also make some highlight short video 2-3mins for those. NEVERTHELESS, I THANK YOY FOR PUTTING YOUR TIME & EFFORT TO SHARE WITH US & GUIDE US. TIME IS PRICELESS. Do you mind if I drop you sone email?

No prob :) and the 3rd scenario from the investement point of view is the safest one. Now your questions :) 1- It will be very easy to restrict folders or allow everyone to see everything. 2- Yes the internet speed will afect the spped when you access your NAS from outside your network but when accessing inside the network (office) speed will be much higher 70mbs EX2/EX4 - 110mbs EX2100/EX4100. 3- EX2 or EX2100 basically speed and new improved a few things on the EX2100 not much really. The other brands for the feedback that i have had from users and also searched are not as easy as WD Cloud Solutions. 4- NAS should be placed near your router or switch (connected trough ethernet to the router) whichever you use, then all devices computers, tablets, tvs etc will have access to the NAS. 5- You can setup a backup job for your external SSD (The EX2100/4100 its easier for this) After configure all you have to do is plug your SSD and everytime that you connect it the NAS will sync all new files from your SSD to your NAS or the reverse, depends on how you configure (Easy to setup by the way) Finally regarding my videos, yes in the past my videos were to long, i was trying to explain everything in one video :) now things are more light and shorter, heres an example of the last NAS i reviewed ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fZbSzAtJFmw.html i was disappointed with it in some areas like the external access but just to let you know that video length is getting better, we learn everyday :) Regarding mails, i just use it for my customers support and also commercial requests, i do have a lot of people that asks questions about youtube on my mail but honestly i cannot use that tool for the channel, for any discussion and questions i always advise the channel comments and my mail for work, i need to work to have free time to keep on doing videos :) Hope i could help All the Best RJ
