I think you guys aren’t giving gen z enough credit. My friends and I don’t really get on our phones when we’re hanging out. Maybe once or twice just to text someone back but that’s just out of curiosity for the person who is trying to contact us. Also when I’m out in public, I rarely see groups of people hanging out and just sitting on their phones. People still get out the house, hang out, have bbqs, go to the beach, go out to bars, play sports together and just have good, normal time hanging out. I feel there are people who “doom scroll”, and I’ve done it too, but most people still have genuine connection just like before the internet and smartphones. (To give context I’m 25 and I’m referring to people of all ages, even the younger gen z’ers) Love you guys, keep up the hard work.

emil is so spot on about andrew yang lol. wasnt his whole platform "not left, not right, forward"? what else would one take from that other than centrism, both policy wise and messaging wise? it felt like traditional neoliberalism with progressive windowdressing

That was Andrew Yang's biggest misunderstanding that he couldn't get past at. When he said not left, not right, he meant this duopoly of political power in the US is halting the progress and preparation of the country for new challenges. He didn't mean he's a centrist, rather saying you shouldn't have to be accepted into American left or right to make political progress.

@@mhsnansr while i’ll grant you his intent seemed to be to differ from his messaging, and i’ll also grant you that he’s very right about the 2 party system, it doesn’t seem that his solutions to that are great. he does not seek to radically shift the US economy away from its neoliberal roots and towards one that works for the people. For example, UBI is great, but when that money is still flowing into the pockets of the 1% and not working for us, how does it shift the material conditions of America or Americans?

@@cdw2468 I agree. Andrew Yang presented himself as something other than the false dichotomy of the American interpretation of Left vs Right (meaning democrat vs republican). He opted to take a centrist position which still operates under a neoliberal framework, so really he’s still on the right; centre-right at best. His idea to circumvent the two party system is basically just halfway in-between neoliberalism and social democracy. UBI is ok I guess, but its proposal is generally never based in class analysis and never actually addresses the actual reason why we would need it in the first place. To be fair, Andrew Yang is kinda progressive, but way closer to the left than any mainstream American politician (aside from Summer Lee or sorta Greg Cesar). Although I would also say that I’m not an incrementalist and I don’t really care for the slow (and nonexistent) creep towards socialism.

Re tiktok ban: lawmakers dont care about consumer data ending up in the hands of the CCP, full stop. if they did, there would be much more general data protection laws. even if tiktok is banned, they can just buy the data from data brokers. as emil put it, if someone tells you who they are, you should believe them

agree, but it's not just about data! ***according to lawmakers*** it's about a foreign government having the indirect (or direct, depending on who you ask) capability of shaping opinions and discourse via what is amplified in the algorithm -- be it about Palestine, elections, covid, anything.

46:30 - It is so funny that we are at a stage where inner-peace, and comfort with ones own consciousness, is a far out idea. However, even more funny is the fact it is being sold back to us as a commodity. I don't know how we move forward from here, because as Emil said we are relying on the tech to save us from the tech. I think the only real answer is encouraging the development of true self-identification (especially outside of online spaces), because despite our current state of rabid identity politics and culture wars, so few people have a clear understanding of their self, and could not imagine or derive any sense of self outside of defined social constructs. But I guess this would leave me in the 'limited tech' camp in a future split society.

I am totally flip-phone-pilled. It has 4g for navigation and if I really need it has google search, but like a shitty desktop version. I'm down from 2 - 3 hrs a day to probably 20 minutes. I still have my smartphone shut off in a drawer if I need it for group chats, and if I'm going on vacation and might need it, I can swap the sim card back in. It's obviously not a complete solution, there's still plenty of other distractions on my computer, but I feel so much better about my life.

I think big cities will be the tech-absent places of the future vs being the all in places. I think cities are perfect for personal interactions and you don't want to be in a rural town with no tech. Maybe big cities have like clubs where you can still pursue tech related hobbies but the city as a whole trys to remove tech related interactions

At my old high school they would take our phones and we had to pay them to get it back. Like I remember showing my friends a picture in the hall and having my phone taken. I had my older sister come up to the school to get my phone. They no longer do it now, which is very frustrating.

hi 20 year old here. My first phone was actually a huawei that i had between 14 and 17 years old. i really liked it. I'm also not on social media other than tumblr (i really enjoy that there's no algorithm). it's not that uncommon for gen z to not be on social media

I’m the same age as Emil and definitely do not share his anti-tech sentiments. I don’t think it will be as age based as people think. There are tons of young people who hate technology now. And tons of gen x-ers who will absolutely never give up their phones.

@@allisonb8912 definitely, my dad is an ipad kida basically lol while my mom doesn't care at all. As for me(gen z), I have a normal relationship with all this stuff, and I can go a whole day without checking my phone. It never felt "addicted" but I also have other friends(same age) that are on their phone all day long .
