That was so interesting! Something to add to my 'Inktober' ideas list! Your mushrooms are one of the Agaricus family - same family as 'supermarket' mushrooms. The gills start pink and darken to almost black as they begin to produce spores. Spore prints are fun. Take a mushroom that is almost open, gently remove the stalk and lay it gill side down on a sheet of white card, add a few drops of water to the cap and cover with upturned bowl to prevent draughts blowing the spores around. Leave for at least 24 hours then carefully lift up the mushroom. The print can be preserved with the same sort of spray used for charcoals or with hairspray.

What a great idea, Julia! I noticed some of the mushrooms had left a print on my table which is covered with white paper. I should give that a try. They definitely look as if they would be edible but I have a thing about not eating mushrooms that don’t come from the supermarket! Stupid I know!

@@DianeAntoneStudiothis does sound fun to do! I agree Diane- I only eat store bought mushrooms- not worth the risk of getting a dangerous one. I don’t know enough about them to pick a safe one from a dangerous one. I need to learn edible plants around me.

Spore prints sound fun! I remember seeing a Clint Eastwood movie called The Betrayed. At the end, Clint is saying how great the mushroom dish tastes and then realizes no one else is eating it.

I meant to say, You've certainly taught me a lot! I have hand issues??? Seriously, my hands are anything but steady, so I don't think holding my brush up straight will actually produce anything but squiggly lines and mishaps. I've just discovered tiny paintings on YT. It is when one uses a very small watercolor paper booklet (er, about 5cmX5cm) and a tiny palette (either an 8 wells and 1 mixing spot along with a clip that holds your booklet and the tiny palette together and then go outside somewhere to find a little scene you like and paint it. You can add black and/or sepia pens from .1-.5mm to fine tune any part of it if you like. Color welcome if desired. I haven't received my booklet or palette yet (they come together as a set) and I understand they are very well made. ps-you can buy bigger palette too that are still small or use an altoids can and make your own. the whole point is that it's easy to just take your supplies, a little bottle w.eye dropper or a tiny spray bottle to wet your paints. Just thought I'd mention this in case you're interested, though I think larger and looser are more your bag. tee hee. BTW, what do your words above the mushrooms mean? I feel very dense right now, duh. I think you painting came out great. And don't put yourself down, my friend. I love you. XOXOJANE

Je me souviens que c etait pas facile de tenir le pinceau perpendiculairement a la feuille de papier . C est des bons souvenirs . Diane, this is awesome! I've not started asian painting yet. Being a beginner watercolor artist, I've wanted to learn Chinese, Japanese painting. Over a year ago when I bought a few watercolor supplies, I also bought a Chinese brush (kinda like yours) rice paper, ink in a bottle, and the flannel-like material that goes underneath the rice paper. Oh and Marie's Chinese watercolor paints. I'm so glad you shared this~ excited actually! I love the artwork ya know! I've painted in bed and on the couch! I'm getting closer to a table top (kitchen table 🤭 ) Long story on that one! I'll spare you that story! I hope you do more with the paints and a asian type style. I'm am thrilled with this~ great mushrooms btw~

Hi Diane - FWIW - FYI - I have that exact same set from Kuretaki - Gansai Tambi, but they don't say "SUMI" or INK as in the link you provided. In the video on the link you gave, they use a regular watercolour brush (round, not calligraphy type) and describe the granulating colours. Mine behave as granulating colours, exactly as shown on this video. 🙂

Looks like fun, thanks Diane 😊 I can only eat mushrooms I have bought from the supermarket as well. I think it stems from childhood, my parents used to gather field mushrooms if we were on a country walk, they loved them with their weekend breakfast. But I remember seeing some horrible creepy crawlies in one of them before mum had prepped them, and it put me off completely 🤢
@DianeAntoneStudio
@DianeAntoneStudio Месяц назад
Yes, I think I might have had a similar childhood experience! Also stories of whole famillies succumbing to mushroom poisoning here in France after gathering so-called safe fungi in the forests - that’s enough to keep me well away from them! I had a friend here for a few years (who has now gone back to the UK) who used to ramble in the woods and come home with great collections of mushrooms and she would insist on giving some to me, although I always put them in the compost and nothing on earth would induce me to eat them!

Yes, the Japanese paper is a bit of a mystery to me I must say. I do have some rice paper in my plan chest, not sure where it came from, or whether it’s the right stuff to use for this, but I found using regular watercolor paper gave a pleasant effect, so I’d probably suggest going with that for the time being. And definitely cheaper watercolor paper, no need to use 100% cotton for a few strokes like this.
