Last week we left #Baja for Mazatlan. This week we explore the surf town of Sayulita and drive for the southern coast of the country. On our way to the coast, we had a major setback and almost ruined the Land Cruiser. Let's just say that our first week in mainland #Mexico came with some obstacles. 🙃
Filmed January 2023 in Sayulita, Mexico

Who are we?
We're Josh and Vanessa, a Canadian couple from British Columbia, who have a passion for the outdoors, travel and meeting rad people. In 2019 we got married and spent the next couple of years working and exploring our BC in our camperized 1992 Mitsubishi Delica. After some major life changes, we decided that life is too short to wait to chase our dreams. So in 2022 we bought our 1994 FJ80 Toyota Land Cruiser and spent the next 12 months camper converting it and preparing to live out our dream of driving the Pan-American Highway.

Glad to hear you guy are safe got the truck fixed and continued on your journey. How did you resorted to fix the transmission house crack/ leak?
@DestinedforWild
@DestinedforWild Год назад
It is definitely a temporary fix but the shop we were at was able to somewhat close the crack and cold welded it and it continued to leak a little afterwards so it currently has a bunch of jb weld over it and it’s at a minimal leak lol we will likely need to drop the transmission and figure it out from there once we are home!

Definitely recommend! We got everything fixed on our Land crusier before we left as well but we think we got sand and dirt in the U joints which wore them down quicker and lead to this happening!

I live in Vallarta with my 1991 80 series. If you find yourself with more mechanical issues and you aren't days and days away, I'm willing to help. I have tools and spares.

Ooooh that looked a little grim on the side of the road there. Glad that wasn't a trip-ender. Keep on rolling 👊

It was definitely not the most ideal spot to breakdown but thankfully we were able to get help! We are so glad we are able to continue on too, thank you!

So glad you were able to get everything repaired! That must have been discouraging. I just got home from Guatemala, which I'm guessing you'll be in soon if not already. I was in Antigua and Panajachel. Panajachel is pretty with the volcanoes around the lake, but I enjoyed Antigua more. Also, Antigua has a great little campground right in town where lots of overlanders stay. It's on iOverlander. We didn't stay there because we flew, but we walked past a couple of times and talked to a couple from Austria who were driving a Unimog. The campground is in the ruins of an old building, which basically makes it a walled campground with lots of trees. The tourist police are right at the gate so it also seems very safe. It's also near a large grocery store and the main market, and not far from the centre of Antigua. Enjoy your journey, I'm looking forward to more videos!

I lived in Guadalajara for 2 years and had an 80 series while living there. There are like 5 of them in the whole of MX so hard to get parts. Crazy the driveshaft failed, such small odds.Great attitude guys.

Yea we didn’t think they would be so scarce in Mexico. Thankfully they were able to find some parts for us and fix what they could! Thank you!

Didnt check/ replace ujoints before trip? id be replacing the rest of them after that little mishap... and think about what other basic service items was skipped 😬😬😬
@DestinedforWild
@DestinedforWild Год назад
Actually everything that moves and needed maintenance was replaced and and greased before we had even left! We try and do a deep check every morning over everything but the morning it all broke we were in a bit of a rush and didn’t do a good check over lol. We ended up finding out afterwards that a seal had broken on the u joint, so that just led to overheating and breaking, lesson learned thankfully! Everything else has been great since and we make sure to take the time to check everything every day.

Thank you! It was definitely frustrating and stressful at moments but we also didn’t expect to feel as calm as we did while we were stuck on the highway. I think we both just knew that we would be okay at the end of the day 😊
