In this video, Greg talks about how he has been thinking about and then realizing we are going to run out of logs and we need a new plan. He goes through the logs we still have to see what is left to mill and there are definitely logs that will keep us going, but not for long. And, of course, there's milling logs in this video. We are almost always milling logs on our Woodland Mills HM130 Max Sawmill.
Did you know we are building a barn out of wood that we are milling on our own sawmill?! If you haven't followed along with our BARN Build, make sure to check out that series in our playlists. We finished the slab this summer and are on a pause while we mill all of the lumber needed for the barn build. We have A LOT of milling in our future.
Here is the video where we share our barn plans. Our plans are from ‪@BarnGeek‬ We are excited to build one of his beautiful barns!
• Why Do We Think WE CAN...
***We are also so excited to have completed our sawmill cover enclosure (sawmill shed). Definitely check out our Sawmill Playlist to watch it all happen. We have shared the process of building our sawmill cover from the very beginning. We have a Woodland Mills HM130 Max sawmill and we live in North Idaho. The sawmill cover / sawmill shed is vital to continue milling for our barn build in the winter months, but it will also be a great way to keep out of the sun during the summer months, and of course all of the rain, in between!
Here is a link to the video that shares the sawmill cover / sawmill shed build from start to finish:
• Sawmill Cover Build - ...
Here are the specs on the sawmill cover / sawmill shed we built:
3 posts in the front
4 posts in the back
Overall dimensions are 15 feet wide by 36 feet long
Longest beam is 28 feet
Front part of the lean to roof is 11'9" and back is 8'
It will have a 3 :12 pitch
Posts and beams are going to be 7 1/2" x 7 1/2"
We have shared the entire build!

Hi, Adam, it’s a bit overwhelming to think about the whole project, but breaking it down into smaller pieces helps. How big of a house are you planning? 😁

Hi, Ian, you’re welcome! Those seem to save some time on those cuts that I can’t use the scale on. Hope it helps! 😁

Howdy y’all- you have come up with some really nice timbers. Always a pleasure getting to watch you saw stuff for your barn. Looking forward to seeing it go up. Are you going to plane the timbers? Take care and stay warm up there. God bless

Thank you, Paul! Yes, we plan on planing the Timbers. I am looking at those 12” Makita’s out of Japan off eBay. Seems legit - what do you think? I already picked up a 16” skilsaw. Any other must haves?? 😁

Nice timbers ! Yes if your careful you get some bonus boards, Took me a little to learn how to use the white measuring guide but works awesome now :) Keep your slab wood in a neat pile to make firewood, Another bonus :)

Hi, we tried to keep slab wood neat and tidy, but it didn’t last very long. We have a couple people that want to cut firewood out of it so we are trying to stack it as best we can. What kind of mill do you have? 😁

I have a Woodland mill HM122 & my shed is big enough to back a 7 foot wide trail in beside to put slabs & lumber on so easy to keep everything cleaned up in your work space :) I have lots of milling video's up :)@@ourdreaminthewoods

Yes the slabs that are real scrappy I just pile to burn & the rest my neighbor makes into firewood, I don't save green slabs for firewood for myself as they are full of sap because they were cut green, even when dry the sap is still there but make good firepit wood :)@@ourdreaminthewoods

You could increase your output if you milled only two sides of logs and left round sides inside wall this would among other advantages lessen milling time and produce more structual members for the inventory you have available. girts and perlins would attach to flat milled surfaces and you will have more inventory to begin your build while increasing the strength of each beam by leaving two sides unmilled. Appearence if you are going to insullate woud be unchanged as insullation would cover un milled surfaces. Ray Stormont

Thanks for the idea, Ray! Not sure if my personality could tolerate only milling two sides - a little type A. Everything is going to be exposed on this project. 😁

I completely understand however if you are going to run short both of us would face a choice that's difficult for people like myself who tend to be prefectionist. I just wanted to suggest an alternative that allows you to complete with all your own lumber and no delays and stay on budget. Best of luck. Ray.@@ourdreaminthewoods

Hi, we have someone that is going to go through the slab cuts for siding. Barn wise - we are going to stick with board and batten. Thanks for watching! 😁

Why do you use a what looks like a 4 x 4 and a 2 x 6 that on the log stops? Just extra support?
@ourdreaminthewoods
@ourdreaminthewoods 7 месяцев назад
Hi, Ian, not sure if it’s necessary but it does support between two log stops and maybe feels a little more solid. Some of these Timbers are going to be exposed and you avoid marking them up. Maybe we are wasting our time but it does seem to help especially when you are edging. Thanks for watching! 😁

Hi, Dean, you should definitely check out our video Real Time - Milling A Log Start to Finish. It’s all in real time. We try to give real time and time lapse in our videos, once in awhile that doesn’t happen… but, all real time would be very long videos. We do plan on making another real time video soon! 😁
